Overview 1. Italian ETCS high speed lines in commercial service and related SRS version, run distance with ETCS 2. Number and type of rolling-stock equipped 3. Timetable-Number of train per day in service 4. Overview on performances 5. Main criticalities detected 6. Further Change Requests proposed by RFI 2

Italian HSL figures summary Km of HSL ETCS double track 610 (2011) Km already run in ETCS (service operation) 5.3 Million Number of loco equipped by ETCS on board 262 Number of train per day in service today 108 6
Sub-systems reference specifications (To-No and Rm-Na HSL) differs from the SRS version because of the implementation of several additional change requests, classified as Designer Choice before the coming of the SRS version, and included in that d* (Mi-Bo and Bo-Fi HSL) differs from the SRS 2.3.0d version because it includes and implements only a subset of the functionalities available in the SRS 2.3.0d. The compatibility of the and 2.3.0d* versions towards the official 2.3.0d version is clarified in the RFI document MIGRATION STRATEGY UNISIG SRS APPLICATION ON RFI HS/HC LINES 7
Italian ETCS high speed lines in commercial service Performance overview HSL Percentage of trains in time (0 delay) Percentage of trains within 10 delay Roma-Napoli 90% 100% Torino-Novara 95% 100% Milano-Bologna 60% 100% 8
Eurostar - Frecciarossa 9
Italian ETCS high speed lines in commercial service Main criticalities detected 1. LOSS OF RADIO CONNECTION 2. ODOMETRY ERROR/FAULT 3. Trip caused by false track circuit occupation 4. Trip caused by mobile terminal reboot/fault 5. Trip caused by EVC shutdown (due to safety platform watchdog command, loss of communication with DMI, loss of communication with train command and control logic, etc) 10
1. LOSS OF RADIO CONNECTION - RECOVERED (It only leads to service brake application) - NOT RECOVERED (It leads to train trip) Example of recovered loss of radio connection 11
ODOMETRY ERROR/FAULT - OVER/UNDER ESTIMATION OF ODOMETRIC ERROR - SPEED AND DISTANCE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FAULT example of error over estimation leading to loss of 2 consecutive balise group 12
Italian ETCS high speed lines in commercial service Degraded mode movements Source: Official RFI 2008 Report to ANSF (Italian National Railway Safety Agency) Year 2007 Torino-Novara Roma-Napoli Average number of commercial trains/month Average number of Staff Responsible movements/month Average number of Staff Responsible movements/train (x0,01) 2,85 4,89 Average number of Staff Responsible movements/day 0,25 1,12 13
Further Change Requests proposed by RFI #1 SINGLE BALISE DIAGNOSTIC MANAGEMENT To detect one fault balise out of a group of 2 or more balise #2 ESCAPE AND RESCUE TUNNEL ZONE DMI ICON To unambiguously point out to the driver escape and rescue point in tunnels 14
Further Change Requests proposed by RFI #3 MANAGEMENT OF MISSED BALISE GROUP WITH FULL SUPERVISION MA To avoid braking in case 2 consecutive BG are missed but MA has been issued and valid head #4 CO-OPERATIVE MA REVOCATION AND PERMETTED OR INDICATION LIMIT It is up to the EVC to chose the proper reference braking curve in case a co- operative MA is issued by RBC 15
Further Change Requests proposed by RFI #5 MANAGEMENT OF BALISE IN STM AREA Management of balises in STM area needs to take onto account national signalling rules and act accordingly (no ETCS message consistency reaction applied unless train is in a transition area) 16
