The Auto Start Stop Function switches off the engine when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill (e.g. at traffic lights or in a traffic jam) to further reduce overall fuel consumption. When the driver presses down on the clutch (six-speed manual transmission) or takes their foot off the brake (eight-speed Steptronic transmission), the engine automatically starts up again in a fraction of a second. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology combines a TwinScroll turbocharger with Valvetronic, Double-VANOS and High Precision Injection in petrol engines. While in diesel engines, CommonRail direct injection is combined with a turbocharger/two-stage turbocharger featuring variable turbine geometry. This significantly reduces the fuel consumption of the BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol and diesel engines while noticeably increasing performance across all engine speeds. With Brake Energy Regeneration, the alternator generates electricity primarily when the driver brakes or takes their foot off the accelerator. Previously unused kinetic energy is transformed into electrical energy and fed into the battery. In the fi eld of aerodynamics, BMW has achieved excellent air resistance fi gures thanks to a range of optimally coordinated innovations. This in turn has a positive effect on overall effi ciency and fuel consumption. Many of these systems are intelligently interconnected and it s this level of integration that delivers the best possible safety, together with maximum driving pleasure on every road, every curve and at every second Chassis and safety The optional adaptive suspension for even more dynamic handling the electronically controlled dampers in the Adaptive M suspension adapt to suit your current driving style and the road conditions. You can modify the damper characteristics using the Driving Experience Control. A noticeably fi rmer damper setting is activated when you select the Sport or Sport+ mode via the Driving Experience Control. For rear-wheel drive models, the Adaptive M suspension also includes a chassis that has been lowered by millimetres, but which has no impact on the driving comfort. The variable sport steering works independently of your current speed, varying the steering ratio in line with the steering angle. It includes the Servotronic function and reduces the steering wheel movement required to achieve a particularly tight steering angle. SeriesGranTurismo Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution, incl. cornering lights and BMW Selective Beam (anti-dazzle High-Beam Assistant), illuminate bends at greater distances by optimally adjusting the swivelling headlights as soon as the driver turns the steering wheel. The variable light distribution automatically adapts the headlight range, to suit city or motorway conditions, for example. To improve short-range visibility, the cornering lights integrated into the fog lights are automatically activated as soon as the indicator is switched on or the steering wheel is turned even when the vehicle is at a standstill. BMW Selective Beam (anti-dazzle High-Beam Assistant), included with the Adaptive Headlights. Automatically switches between high and low beam depending on traffi c conditions and ambient light for optimal illumination of the road at night. The system monitors the presence of vehicles in front or oncoming traffi c and continuously adjusts the high-beam lights to avoid dazzling other road users. Active Protection means that all safety components in the BMW are designed to complement each other perfectly. In potentially dangerous situations, the Active Protection function automatically increases the tension in the front seat belts and closes any open windows and the optional Panorama glass roof. If an accident occurs, an automatic braking function brings the vehicle to a complete stop, which signifi cantly helps to prevent follow-on collisions. In addition, the Attentiveness Assistant monitors the steering response of the driver for signs of tiredness and signals any irregular driving behaviour on the Control Display. Intelligent ecall* automatically sets off an alarm if a serious accident necessitating the release of airbags and activation of belt tensioners occurs. Via a built-in SIM card, rescue details such as the exact position of the vehicle, information about the severity of the accident and possible injury risks of the passengers, will be transmitted to the BMW call centre. The BMW call centre will inform the nearest rescue coordination centre and will supervise the accident victims over the phone until the rescue service arrives. The emergency call can also be triggered manually, in case other road users require help. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with extended functionality includes Cornering Brake Control (CBC), the hill-start and braking assistant, brake drying and braking readiness. DSC recognises any slight skidding and stabilises your car within fractions of a second. Traction Mode (DTC) is a subsidiary function of DSC. In certain driving conditions it allows increased wheel slip, which optimises acceleration and enables you to drive more dynamically. Airbags are an integral part of the perfectly coordinated safety system in your BMW. Six dedicated airbags provide increased safety: the driver and front passenger airbags, a curtain system of head airbags for front and rear passengers, as well as side airbags integrated into the back of the front seats. Runflat tyres feature reinforced side walls that prevent the tyres from completely collapsing or loosening from the rim if the air pressure drops. So in the event of a fl at tyre, you ll be able to make it safely to the next repair shop (standard with all " light alloy wheels and larger). The tyre pressure monitor, which comes as standard, lets the driver know when the air pressure in one of the tyres drops % or more below the recommended pressure.
