2 Principle of operation The process medium can flow through the butterfly valve in either direction. The direction of flow "A" (see Fig. 3) is recommended as less torque is required. The position of the butterfly disc (3) determines the flow across the free area between disc and body (1). Butterfly valves are sealed between the disc and seat. The compression force of the sealing ring (4) on the disc determines both the permissible differential pressure p and the breakaway torque when the disc opens or closes. The double eccentric bearing design causes the disc on opening or closing to remain in contact with the seat only over a very small angle of rotation. This reduces wear and increases the service life of the valve A 5 B Fail-safe position Attached to the AT Type SRP Rotary Actuator, the butterfly valve has two fail-safe positions which become effective when the piston is relieved of pressure as well as when the supply air fails: Valve CLOSED without supply air, the butterfly valve closes when the supply air fails. Operating temperature, process medium and long operating times may affect the torque considerably. The closing torque increases by 20 % when dry gas is used.
