68 AllPoints Nationwide Road Hazard and Service Warranties Del-Nat has an agreement with Automotive Business Solutions to offer the AllPoints Tire Protection Package and the AllPoints Nationwide Service Warranty through Stockholders and Direct Distributors to retail sites who choose to enroll. AllPoints does not in any way impact the National Brand Roadside Tire Assistance programs. AllPoints is separate from and in addition to the roadside tire assistance. Selling a nationwide warranty levels the playing field allowing even the smallest dealer to compete with the larger retail chains, build loyalty and increase ticket averages with very little administration at a set low monthly cost. If a customer experiences a failure (road hazard or vehicle) and is more than 25 miles away from the original dealer, they call the Del-Nat dedicated toll free number to be referred to the closest participating dealer. The customer must be able to produce a valid road hazard certificate and/or invoice showing service/repair or tire and road hazard coverage purchase. An ABS technician will review all the claim procedures and repair facility information in detail with the consumer. They will then verify the warranty repairs that are needed with the repairing facility, and authorize the repair, or tire replacement (in the case of tires). The repair facility then faxes the original invoice and invoice for the subsequent repair into ABS for immediate payment. ABS pays the repairing facility their posted labor rate and standard book time for the repair, up to the amount of the original repair or tire. ABS pays for parts & labor immediately by credit card, or will mail a check. There is never a charge back to the original dealer. ABS then sends letters to both the consumer (apologizing for any inconvenience & asking for their input) and the original repair facility (letting them know one of their customers had a warranty claim). ~67~

70 Understanding Tire Markings Tire Size Markings The tire size shown is P185/60R14 82H. The P represents the car type, Passenger. The 185 represents its section width (tire width in mm). The 60 is the tires Aspect Ratio (the ratio of the sidewall height to the tread width). The R represents radial tire construction. The 14 represents the rim/wheel size and 82H represents the load index and speed symbol. Speed Ratings and Load Index Speed ratings are determined by indoor laboratory testing methods which measure high speed tire durability under controlled test conditions. The speed rating is also referred to as the performance rating of the tire, since the higher speed rated tires generally offer improved handling and maneuverability compared to lower speed rated tires. The Load Index indicates the maximum load capacity each tire is designed to support. Testing procedures for speed ratings and load indexes do not take into account underinflation, tire damage, vehicle characteristics, or road conditions which can lead to sudden tire failure or loss of vehicle control at much lower speeds and loads than indicated by the tire s speed rating and load index. Understanding Tire Markings wear The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear 1.5 times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100. The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, and may depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, vehicle condition, road characteristics, and climate. Traction The traction grades from highest to lowest are AA, A, B and C. They represent a tire s ability to stop on wet pavement as measured under controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire marked C may have poor traction performance. Temperature The temperature grades are also A, B and C, representing the tire s resistance to heat generation and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life; excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corresponds to a level of performance which all passenger tires must meet under Federal safety laws. ~69~

71 Tire Care & Safety Proper tire care and safety is simple and easy. The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) recommends taking five minutes every month and before every long trip to check your tires, including the spare. Just remember to Be Tire Smart - Play Your PART: Pressure, Alignment, Rotation,. How to Check Inflation Pressure Look for this information in your vehicle. Refer to your vehicle s owners manual for the proper level of inflation; it may also be posted on the door post or in the glove box. When you check the inflation pressure, make sure the tires are cool - meaning they are not hot from driving even a mile. (Note: If you have to drive a distance to get air, check and record the tire pressure first and add the appropriate inflation pressure when you get to the pump. It is normal for tires to heat up and the inflation pressure inside to increase as Example you drive. Never bleed or reduce air pressure when tires are hot.) Check inflation pressure once a month and before long trips. If you overfill the tire, you can release air by pushing on the metal stem in the center of the valve with a fingernail or the tip of a pen. Then recheck the pressure with your tire gauge. Replace the valve cap. Remember to check the spare. (Note: Some spare tires require higher inflation pressure). Why Check Your Alignment? If your car s suspension system is out of alignment, your tires will wear unevenly and you may experience handling problems. Potholes and rough roads can contribute to problems with alignment. Front-wheel drive vehicles, and those with independent rear suspension, require alignment of all four wheels. Have a tire dealer check your alignment periodically as specified by your vehicle owner s manual or if handling problems develop, such as pulling. Also have your tire balance checked periodically. An unbalanced tire and wheel assembly may result in irregular wear or vibration. Why Rotate Your Tires? Each tire on your car supports a different amount of weight; this unequal weight distribution causes your tires to wear at different rates. By rotating your tires, you can extend their useful life. If your tires show uneven wear, ask your tire dealer to check for and correct any misalignment, imbalance or other mechanical problem involved before rotation. Refer to your vehicle s owners manual for rotation recommendations. If no rotation period is specified, tires should be rotated approximately every 5,000 miles. Sometimes front and rear tires use different pressures. After rotation, adjust tire inflation pressure to the figures recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. How to Check When the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch, tires must be replaced. All tires have wear bars, which are small, raised bars of rubber in the groove that indicate when tires are worn out. If your tread is worn down to the wear bars, it s time for a new tire. A penny is a reliable tool to check tire tread. 1. Take a penny and put Lincoln s head into one of the grooves of the tire tread. If part of his head is covered by the tread, you re driving with the legal amount of tread. 2. If you can see all of Lincoln s head, it s time to replace the tire. Visually check your tires for signs of uneven wear. You may have irregular tread wear if there are high and low areas or unusually smooth areas. Also make sure no nails or other objects are embedded in the tire. Consult your tire dealer as soon as possible if you see problems. Other Important Information: Practice good driving habits, which will help keep your tires in good condition. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Vehicles equiped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) can help motorists detect loss of inlfation pressure. Federal regulations require TPMS to warn drivers when tires are 25% under inflated. For many vehicles this warning may be too late to prevent damage caused by under inflation. TPMS units are NOT a replacement for monthly tire pressure checks with a gauge. Obey posted speed limits. Always buckle your seat belt. Avoid fast starts, stops and turns. Avoid potholes and other objects on the road. Do not run over curbs or hit your tires against the curb when parking. Do not overload your vehicle.
