20 WHY HAVE A CHAIR MAT? A chair mat is an important accessory for chairs with casters. Chair mats provide a smooth, hard surface for your chair, so you can move easily about your work area. They also protect floors and carpets from unnecessary wear, and can protect your hardware from static electricity. Chair mats protect your carpet. Although newer carpet is dense enough to allow a chair to roll, carpet fibers and backing are not designed to handle the extreme pressure generated by casters. The down force of a chair is nearly 100 times greater than a footstep! Under this stress, unprotected carpet will lose fibers and backing will break down, shortening the life of the carpet. A chair mat spreads this down force and prevents damage to carpeting. Chair mats reduce injury and fatigue. Use of chair mats can significantly reduce lower back and joint strain because casters move more easily across a hard surface. FIRST - MEASURE YOUR FLOOR SPACE TO ENSURE YOU PURCHASE THE CORRECT SIZE. There are 2 types of chair mats to choose from: 1. Carpet Chair mats - feature a gripper back for stay put performance on carpets, ramped edge for easy roll on/off and are available in a variety of thicknesses to suit different carpets. 2. Hard Floor Chair mats - designed for tile, concrete, vinyl and wood floors. They have a smooth surface to protect your floors. Ensure that the chair mat is not going in a wet area and discontinue use if slippage occurs as some floor types can be more slippery than others and the chair mat may not be suitable. TIPS! 1. When choosing a chair mat for carpets, it is important that you choose the correct mat for the carpet thickness to ensure long life for both the chair mat and carpet. 2. Chair mats for carpets are designed with grippers for holding it in place. The grippers and thickness of the mat vary in size depending on the carpet thickness. 3. If you use a low pile chair mat on high pile carpet - the mat will CRACK! Simply because the mat is not the correct thickness to 'absorb' castor impact as it rolls on the thick carpet. 4. PIN TEST: As a handy hint: press a pin or similar object through your carpet and underlay until it reaches the floor. Measure the length (mm) as a guide to how thick the carpet and underlay are. 5. This will help you to ensure that you choose the correct thickness chair mat. 6. Now you are ready to choose a chair mat based on this thickness.
