67 Why Filter Oils? Oil is supposed to clean, cool, seal and lubricate. As contaminants enter your oil system, efficiencies are lost and avoidable expenditures are right around the corner. Just because you buy new oil does not mean it is clean oil. It is not uncommon for new oil to have a cleanliness level that is less than best practice (see below). A simple oil sample test can often confirm this. Filtering new oil prior to use has become a critical step in best practice organizations to ensure that contaminants are not introduced into their lubricant systems. Failure to do so can become an expensive oversight. In addition to this, vigilant on-site filtration of oil during maintenance activities, including transferring oil from bulk storage tanks into reservoirs and system top ups will dramatically improve oil cleanliness levels before contamination reduces mechanical system life. If oil becomes contaminated in service simply filter the oil instead of dumping it. The best practice and most economical solution to effective oil filtration, depth filtration systems provide rapid payback through significantly reduced consumable use resulting in a lower total cost of ownership when compared to spin on filter systems. Depth filters hold well in excess of 50 times the amount of dirt and particulates compared to spin on filters and additionally can remove moderate amounts of water present in oil. Studies have shown that it can cost in excess of $500 per pound to remove dirt using a 3-micron spin on filter, while the cost of using our depth filters is less than $10 per pound.
