Legal Requirement Pre Start Perform thorough inspection of machine prior to start up One of the most important tasks you will perform each shift 3

Legal Requirement, con t This checklist is only a guide Pre Start For complete pre-trip instruction, consult the operators manual Operators manual is required to be readily available to the operator 4

Operator s Manual Familiarize yourself with the manual There are many different makes and models of graders that all have different control configurations Some equipment has AUX controls, they won t be active unless the AUX equipment is attached 5

Unlicensed Equipment Permit Pre Start Required by any unlicensed equipment using public roads inside the City of Saskatoon

7

Greasing Pre Start The grader must be greased at the start of every shift. Grease guns and tubes are located on the east wall of the grader shed. If you take the last tube, notify your supervisor so the stock can be replaced. 8

Greasing, con t Pre Start If regular greasing is not completed, it will prematurely wear metal on metal wear points Over greasing should be avoided to avoid damaging grease seals and boots Wiping spilled grease will help keep your equipment clean, and help identify failed boots and seals 9

10

Hydraulic Inspection Pre Start Hydraulic systems are under extreme pressure Severe injury or death can result! Injection injuries contaminate the blood with metals and oil, and can result in compartmental damage Immediate medical care should be sought if an injection occurs 11

Hydraulic Inspection Pre Start Fluids can penetrate skin, even when protected by gloves Use cardboard or heavy paper to check for leaks Never run your hand over, hydraulic lines are steel braided and a puncture wound could occur Caution: Never attempt hydraulic repairs without training, report it to V&E so it can be repaired be a qualified technician. 12

Visual Inspection Machine frame ROPS/FOPS Retaining pins at pivot points Cracks in paint or welds with rust visible Attachment condition 13

Rims & Tires Rim condition Lug nuts Rim locks & valve stem for leaks No cuts, bulges or other damage Proper inflation 14

Tires Tires should be inflated to the manufacturers recommended pressures Over or under inflated tires will have adverse effects on the machines handling and the traction will be greatly reduced Proper tire pressure is key to traction and maintaining a comfortable riding machine 15

Engine Compartment Inspect area for fluid leaks Engine oil Remove dipstick and check oil level Engine coolant Check site glass Check overflow Radiator Check for leaks Check for blockages Check coolant hoses for leaks and overflow coolant level

Engine Compartment, con t Oil / Transmission cooler Depending on model Hydraulic fluid (Transmission fluids) Tank condition Check site glass Check cap and breather are clean and secure Hoses Cracked, wore or damaged

Engine Compartment Inspection Fluid leaks on ground / under machine Check belt condition and tension Inspect wiring for damage 18

Battery Inspection CAUTION: Sulfuric acid in batteries can cause burns. Batteries can form hydrogen gas & oxygen and are highly explosive if exposed to heat or sparks! Operators are only required to visually inspect the battery for leaks, confirm the tie downs are in place, inspect the wires for damage and make sure corrosion isn t forming on the posts. 19

Lights and Markers Broken lenses Broken wires Burned out or missing lights Malfunctioning switches Pre Start 20

Blades Pre Start Depending on the season, you will be required to install different types of blades on your machine During summer operations, double bevel curved blades are used for asphalt and gravel work For winter operations, serrated blades are used Excessive blade pressure will reduce the life of your blades and will negatively effect traction. Too little pressure and your machine won t cut gravel or snow effectively. 21

Blade Inspection Inspect moldboard for excessive wear Cracks, broken weldments, etc Inspect end bits Inspect cutting edges 22

Volvo Inspection 23

Cat Inspection 24

Entering The Grader REPORT- defective ladders, steps, or railings immediately NEVER- rush during mount & dismount Use 3- points of contact during mount & dismount Face the machine 25

Seat Belt Inspect daily- Do not operate if defective Seat belts save lives & prevent injury SEAT BELT USE IS MANDATORY! 26

Before Operating Work surfaces Check doors / curtains Check pedals / levers Wipe up grease or other messes 27

Before Operating, con t Slippery surfaces are dangerous, remove mud / dust / snow/ ice Restrain loose items; Lunch boxes Chains Tools etc. 28

Before Operating, con t Clean all windows Clean lights Check wipers Clear loose objects away from foot pedals / operating controls 29

After Starting Engine Backup alarm Instruments / gauges / warning lights Fire control / fire extinguisher Attachments Control lever movement / foot pedal movement. Safety guards & grills Safety interlock system 30

Fire Extinguishers Properly maintain & inspect the fire extinguishers / fire suppression system Check daily as part of pre-operational inspection Replace if necessary 31

Fire Extinguisher Use 32

Lock Out Tag Out When a Defect is found on your Grader. Attach DO NOT OPERATE tag to equipment. Immediately report all problems to your Supervisor and V&E. 33
