3 : Use this instrument properly and safely. BEFORE USE, READ THIS MANUAL. This Operator's Manual contains information necessary for the operation of the NIDEK SATELLITE TRACER Model Lt 910. This manual includes operating procedures, safety precautions, specifications, and information about accessories and maintenance. This manual is necessary for proper use. Especially, the safety precautions and operating procedures must be thoroughly understood prior to the operation of the instrument. Keep this manual handy for reference. If you encounter any problems or have questions about the instrument, please contact NIDEK or your authorized distributor. Safety precautions In this manual, a signal word is used to designate a degree or level of safety alerting. The definition is as follows. CAUTION Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, might result in minor or moderate injury or property damage accident. Even situations that are labeled CAUTION might result in serious injury under certain conditions. Safety must be followed strictly at all times. I

4 : Use precautions Before Use CAUTION Do not use the instrument for other than the intended purpose. NIDEK is not responsible for accidents or malfunctions caused by careless use. Never disassemble nor touch the inside of the instrument. This may result in electric shock or malfunction. Install the instrument in an environment that meets the following conditions. The following conditions must be maintained during use. Use conditions Temperature: 5 to 40ºC (41 to 104ºF) Humidity: Relative humidity must not exceed 50% at a maximum temperature of 40ºC Pressure: 700 to 1060 hpa Installation place: Interior A place with low dust A place free of vibration and impact Avoid storing the instrument where it is exposed to rain or water, or poisonous gas or liquid is present. Corrosion or malfunction of the instrument may occur. Install the instrument in a location with an adequate operating area in front of the instrument as illustrated on page V Be sure to use a wall outlet which meets the power specification requirements. If the line voltage is too high or too low, the instrument may not perform properly. Malfunction or fire may occur. Connect the power plug to a ground outlet. Or connect a grounding wire to a ground terminal. Electric shock or fire may occur in the event of malfunction or power leakage. Completely insert the power plug into the outlet as far as the prongs will go. Fire may occur if the instrument is used with a loose connection. Do not place heavy objects on the power cord. The damaged power cord may cause fire or electric shock. Do not use the power cord other than supplied. Also do not connect the supplied cord to any other instrument. Malfunction or fire may result. Before connecting the cable, turn off the power switch and disconnect the power cord from an outlet. Malfunction of the instrument may result. II

5 : CAUTION Hold the base with both hands when carrying the instrument to another location. Accidental dropping of the instrument may cause damage to the instrument and/or cause bodily injury. During Use CAUTION Connect the cable to the RS-232C connector securely, maintaining the correct orientation of the cable connector. Data transmission is not performed properly. In the event of smoke or strange odors, immediately turn off the instrument and disconnect the power plug from the outlet. After you are sure that the smoke has stopped, then contact NIDEK or your authorized distributor. Usage of the instrument under such abnormal conditions may cause fire or electric shock. In case of fire, use a dry chemical (ABC) extinguisher to extinguish the fire. Immediately replace the power cord if the internal wires are exposed, the instrument turns on or off when the power cord is moved, or the cord and/or plug are too hot to be held with hands. This may result in electric shock or fire. Be sure not to apply too much pressure on the stylus of the tracing unit. The stylus is easy to bend or break. After Use CAUTION Turn off the power switch and put the dust cover on when the instrument is not in use. If dust settles, it may affect the measurement accuracy or result malfunction. Do not yank the power cord to disconnect it from a wall outlet but hold the plug. This can damage the metal core of the cord and may result in fire, short circuit or electric shock. Occasionally clean the prongs of the power plug with a dry cloth. If dust settles between the prongs, the dust will collect moisture, and short circuit or fire may occur. If the instrument will not be used for a long time, disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. Fire may occur. III

6 : CAUTION Maintain the surrounding temperature and humidity at the following ranges during transport and storage of the instrument. Environmental conditions Temperature: -25 to 70 C (-13 to 158 ºF) Humidity: % (Non-condensing) A place with low dust A place not exposed to direct sunlight To transport the instrument, use the special packing materials to protect the instrument from shock or impact. Excessive vibration or impact to the instrument may cause malfunction. Maintenance and Check CAUTION Be sure to perform check before use and after use. It is recommended to have regular checks every two years. Regular checks must be performed by qualified personnel. Ask NIDEK or your authorized distributor for details. When performing maintenance work, secure a sufficient maintenance space. (see page V). Maintenance work in an insufficient space may result in injury. Use the specified fuses to replace the old ones. If not, fire may occur. Before fuse replacement, turn off the instrument and disconnecting the power cord from the wall outlet. Electric shock may result. Never use organic solvents such as a paint thinner to clean the exterior of the instrument. It may ruin the surface of the instrument. IV

It is recommended to commission the disposal to a designated industrial waste disposal contractor. When disposing of packing materials, sort them by material and follow local ordinances and recycling regulations. V

11 1. BEFORE USE 1.1 Outline of the instrument 1 The NIDEK SATELLITE TRACER Model Lt 910 is a frame tracer which measures the shapes of glasses. It traces the frames in three dimensions to measure the three-dimensional lens circumference. In addition, measurement of patterns or demo lenses is available. The instrument is very easy to use simply by setting frames or such and pressing a switch. This instrument can be connected to various kinds of lens edging equipment in a laboratory to comprise a lens processing system. *1 *1. The Lt 910 interface specifications must be compatible with the connecting systems. Standard specifications Connecting to a personal computer or NIDEK s grinding system. LAB specifications Connecting to a LAB system. NAVIS-EC specifications Connecting to a NAVIS-EC. 1

13 BEFORE USE: Configuration 1. Lower slider 2. Upper slider Frames are fastened between these sliders. 3. Rim clips Hold the rims of frames. Each upper and lower slider has two clips Stylus Traces a frame groove to measure its frame shape. 5. Pattern setting unit support Mounts the pattern setting unit set with a pattern or demo lens. 6. Starts right-eye tracing. 7. Starts both-eye tracing. 8. Starts left-eye tracing. 9. Inlet This is where the power cord is connected. 10. RS-232C connector As an external tracer, this connector is used for connecting the SNT/LNT models of the Le 1000, NT model of the Lex 1000, and Ice Computer connector This is a communication connector to connect the server computer. (Only for STD and NAVIS-EC specifications) 12. Barcode connector This is where the barcode scanner (or numeric keypad) is connected. (Except for STD specifications) 3

14 BEFORE USE: Labels 1.3 Labels Cautionary labels are provided on the Lt 910. If labels are curling up or characters fading and becoming barely legible, contact NIDEK or your authorized distributor. Indicates that caution must be taken. Refer to the operator's manual before use. Indicates a dangerous part to which a high voltage is applied. The state of the power switch. If the symbol side of the switch is flipped down, the power is not supplied to the tracer. The state of the power switch. If the symbol side of the switch is flipped down, the power is supplied to the tracer. Indicates that the tracer must be supplied only with alternating current. Indicates the fuse rating. 16 BEFORE USE: Before First Use 1.5 Before First Use Place the tracer on a stable table and connect the power cord. 1 Place the main body to a stable table. 2 Remove the cushion retaining the upper and lower slider. 3 Remove the tape and spacer retaining the inside of the tracing unit. Cushion Tape Spacer 4 Connect the power code and RS-232C cable to the rear of the tracer. Fix the RS-232C cable by tightening the knob attached to the connector. 5 Connect another end of the RS-232C cable to the instrument to be connected. 6 Make sure that the power switch is turned off ( ) and plug the power cord in the wall outlet. RS-232C-cable Power code CAUTION The electrical outlet must have a grounding terminal. Electric shock or fire may occur in the event of malfunction or power leakage. 6

17 BEFORE USE: Before First Use 7 Turn the power switch on ( ). The Lt 910 is initialized. 8 Calibrate the tracing unit. See 1.6 Tracing Unit Calibration (page 8) 1 This is all you have to do before use. 7

18 BEFORE USE: Tracing Unit Calibration 1.6 Tracing Unit Calibration Calibrate the tracer using the provided standard frames and standard pattern. Standard frames Frame tracing calibration with the stylus Standard pattern Pattern tracing calibration with the pattern tracing pin Calibration is performed by service personnel at the time of installation. It is recommended to calibrate the tracing unit for high tracing accuracy before use. In addition, perform calibration also when an error occurs in circumference. 1 Turn on the power. 2 After initialization, set the instrument to calibration mode. 1) Press while pressing. 2) Release. 3) Release. A beep sounds and the indicator of blinks. 3 Set the provided standard frames ( 45). Set the standard frames, with the side inscribed with the number facing up. Fit the rim clips into the grooves of the frames. 4 Press. Automatic calibration (frame) starts. After several traces, calibration finishes. A beep sounds, the instrument exits from calibration mode, and the standard frames are released. Standard frames ( 45) To avoid calibration with frames other than standard one, when the circumference exceeds the correction value of ±1 mm, the indicator of blinks and calibration is not performed automatically. In such a case, take the following actions. Confirm that the provided standard frames ( 45) are used and press. Calibration becomes enabled. Go to Step 5. When other frames are used, press or. Calibration becomes disabled. Perform calibration with the standard frames again 8

19 BEFORE USE: Tracing Unit Calibration 5 Set the instrument to calibration mode. 1) Press while pressing. 2) Release. 3) Release. 1 A beep sounds and the indicator of blinks. 6 Remove the standard frames and set the provided standard pattern. Set the standard pattern, with the side inscribed A facing up. See Steps 1 to 2 of Pattern tracing. 7 Press. Automatic calibration (pattern) starts. After calibration is completed, a beep sounds and the instrument exits from calibration mode and returns to normal mode. 8 Remove the standard pattern. 9

20 BEFORE USE: Storing the Pattern Setting Unit 1.7 Storing the Pattern Setting Unit Store the pattern setting unit free from loss or damage when not in use. It is recommended to attach the provided holder for the pattern setting unit to either side cover of the Lt 910 and to set the pattern setting unit to the holder. Attaching the holder for the pattern setting unit The holder can be attached to both the left and right sides. The procedure for attaching it to the right side is described here. 21 2. OPERATION PROCEDURES In this section, the tracing procedure is mainly explained. 22 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Preparation 2.2 Preparation 1 Connect the power cord to the inlet. 2 Make sure that the power switch is turned off ( ) and connect the power cord to a wall outlet. CAUTION Do not turn the power on when the frame is set on the tracer. The stylus may hit the frame while initializing and cause deformation or breakage of the frame. Fully insert the main power plug into the outlet. Fire may occur in the instrument is used with a loose connection. Be sure to use a wall outlet which meets the power specification requirements. If the line voltage is too high or too low, the instrument may not give full performance. Malfunction or fire may result. Do not overload the electrical outlet. A multi-outlet supplying power to too many devices may become overheated and cause fire. Be sure to use an outlet equipped with a ground terminal. Electric shock or a fire may occur in the event of malfunction or power leakage. 3 Make sure that the power of the equipment connected to the Lt 910 with RS-232C cable is turned on. 4 Turn the power switch on ( ). 5 Calibrate the tracing unit. See 1.6 Tracing Unit Calibration (page 8). The Lt 910 is now ready for use. 12

23 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing 2.3 Tracing Tracing measures the shapes of frames or patterns. There are the following types of tracing. Select the desired one. Frame tracing (Both eyes) Frame tracing (Single eye) Semiauto tracing Goggle type frame tracing Pattern tracing Demo lens tracing Traces the both eyes of general frames. Traces the left- or right-eye of a general frame. When the stylus is not automatically set in the groove at the start of frame tracing. When the stylus comes off the groove of the sharply warped frame during tracing. Hold by hand the frame not being traced. Traces the patterns of two-point or nylor frames etc. Traces mounted lenses in the same manner as the pattern tracing Frame tracing For rims with low stiffness such as thin rim frames, only perform demo lens tracing. Distortion may occur and correct measurement cannot be obtained from rims with low stiffness. Both-eye tracing This is the procedure to measure the frame shapes for both eyes as well as the FPD (frame pupil distance). 1 Set frames into the tracing unit. 1) Set the top of the frames. Pull forward the lower slider and fasten the frame top between the rim clips on the upper slider. 2) Set the bottom of the frames. Slowly release the lower slider, placing Rim clips the frame bottom between the rim clips on the lower slider. 3) Move the frames left or right to bring them to the approximate center of the tracer. 24 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing When the frame is set in condition that the stylus is located in the center, the bridge may contact the stylus depending on the frame shape. Stylus Upper slider When the stylus is located in the center. Lower slider Bridge When the bridge contacts the stylus. Stylus In this case, press or to move the stylus to right or left before frame setting. However, pressing or starts the pattern tracing when the upper and lower sliders are opened to their limits. Therefore, confirm that the upper and lower sliders are closed beforehand. 2 Start tracing both frames. Press. Tracing is complete when the frames are released. 3 Pull the lower slider forward to remove the frames. Single-eye tracing This is the procedure to trace the frame for either eye. 1 Set frames into the tracing unit. See Step1 of Both-eye tracing (page 13). 2 Press either or. For tracing the left-eye frame Press. For tracing the right-eye frame Press. The FPD (frame pupil distance) cannot be measured in single-eye tracing. 14

25 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing Semiauto tracing This is the procedure to fit the stylus into the groove by hand before tracing the frame which stylus is not automatically set in the groove. This is for frames, especially plastic ones, whose grooves are not in the middle of the edges. 1 Set frames into the tracing unit. See Step1 of Both-eye tracing (page 13). 2 Press for more than three seconds. The stylus moves and pauses in the tracing start position. In single-eye tracing, press or for three seconds instead of. 2 3 Fit the stylus into the groove by hand. 4 Start tracing. Press. After tracing one frame, the stylus moves to another frame and pauses in the tracing start position. 5 Trace the other frame in the same manner as Steps 3 and 4. 15

26 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing Goggle type frame tracing When the frames are sharply warped, the stylus may come off the groove. In such a case, fasten only the one frame between the rim clips and perform single-eye tracing. This tracing is available in both left and right frames. The procedure for tracing the right frame is described here. 1 Set the right frame in the tracing unit so that the frame becomes level. Do not fasten the left frame between the rim clips. Hold the left temple to maintain the right frame level. 2 Start tracing. Press. Side not to be traced Hold the frame by finger. Do not fasten it between the rim clips. Side to be traced Make the frame level. Fasten it between the rim clips. The rim clips fasten the right frame. However, do not release the left frame until tracing is completed. When the frame moves, tracing is not performed accurately. 3 Remove the frames from the tracing unit. The FPD (frame pupil distance) cannot be measured in goggle type frame tracing. 16

27 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing Pattern tracing Traces the patterns of two-point frames etc. 1 Set a pattern onto the pattern setting unit. 1) Set the pattern while pressing the white button on the pattern setting unit. Push the pattern as far as it will go. The pattern is attached as follows: Left-eye pattern Right-eye pattern White button 2 Nasal side Temporal side Nasal side Pattern Pattern setting unit 2) Release the white button to lock the pattern. 2 Set the pattern setting unit to the tracing unit. Set the pattern setting unit to the tracing unit. Pull the lower slider forward and set the pattern setting unit onto the pattern setting unit support. Align the two pins of the pattern setting unit to the circular holes on the pattern setting unit support. The pattern setting unit is fastened to the pattern setting unit support by magnet. Pattern setting unit 3 Press either or. For tracing the left-eye pattern Press. For tracing the right-eye pattern Press. The tracing pin comes out and then tracing starts. Pattern tracing pin 17

28 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing 4 Remove the pattern setting unit after tracing. When tracing is complete, the tracing pin is automatically stored. Lifting the left side first makes removing the pattern setting unit easier. The FPD (frame pupil distance) cannot be measured in pattern tracing Demo lens tracing Traces the lens that has already been processed and mounted into the frame in the same manner as the pattern tracing. 1 Block the convex surface of a demo lens with a pliable cup. 1) Mark the approximate center of the demo lens with a lensmeter. At this time, the frame must be contacted with the lens table while the demo lens is mounted in the frame. Lens table 2) Stick a double-sided adhesive pad on the lens cup. 3) Block the convex surface of the demo lens with the lens cup using a centering device. Block the lens so that the markings on the demo lens are aligned to the groove orientation of the lens cup. 18

29 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing 2 Set the lens cup to the pattern setting unit. Set the lens cup while pressing the white button of the pattern setting unit. For left-eye lenses For right-eye lenses White button Temporal side Nasal side Temporal side 2 Pattern setting unit 3 Set the pattern setting unit to the tracing unit. Pull the lower slider forward and set the pattern setting unit onto the pattern setting unit support. Align the two pins of the pattern setting unit to the circular holes on the pattern setting unit support. The pattern setting unit is fastened to the pattern setting unit support by magnet. 4 Press either or. For tracing the left-eye lens Press. For tracing the right-eye lens Press. The tracing pin comes out and then tracing starts. Pattern setting unit Note that the switch to be pressed is the opposite of that pressed in pattern tracing. 5 Remove the pattern setting unit after tracing. When tracing is complete, the tracing pin is automatically stored. Lifting the left side first makes removing the pattern setting unit easier. The FPD (frame pupil distance) cannot be measured in demo lens tracing. 19

30 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing [Precautions in demo lens tracing] Demo lens is traced with its convex surface up different from frame or pattern tracing. Therefore, take care the relationship between right and left of the demo lenses and trace switches ( / ). Example 1: When right frame shape is traced to start trac- Set the left lens with its convex surface adsorbed to the tracer and press ing. 31 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing Stopping tracing Follow the following procedures to stop tracing. Stopping frame tracing 1 Press. The stylus moves to the original position and frames are released. 2 Stopping pattern or demo lens tracing 1 Press. 2 Remove the pattern setting unit. The pattern tracing pin is stored. 21

32 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Tracing After use 1 Turn the power off while the Lt 910 does not trace and communicate. Turn OFF ( ) the power switch. Do not turn the power off during tracing. CAUTION Failure of the tracer may result. 2 Perform check after use. See Check after use (page 23). 3 Put the provided dust cover on the instrument. Turn off the power switch and put the dust cover on when the instrument is not in use. If dust settles, it may affect the measurement accuracy or result malfunction. CAUTION If the instrument will not be used for a long time, disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. If dust settles between the plugs, the dust will correct moisture, and short circuit or dire may occur. 22

33 OPERATION PROCEDURES: Daily Checks 2.4 Daily Checks Check the following before and after every use each day. It is recommended that a checklist is prepared and the check results are recorded Check before use 1) Are there any apparent deformations or dirt which might interfere with proper operation? Especially confirm that there are no foreign substances or dirt on the tracing unit. 2 2) It is recommended to calibrate the tracing unit. See 1.6 Tracing Unit Calibration (page 8) for calibration Check after use 1) Is the power turned off? 2) Is the Lt 910 dirty or damaged? 3) Are the pattern setting unit, standard pattern, and standard frame accounted for and free from damage? 4) Is the dust cover on? 23

MAINTENANCE 3.1 Troubleshooting In the event that the Lt 910 does not work correctly, correct the problem according to the following table before contacting NIDEK or your authorized distributor. Symptom The Lt 910 does not work at all. Circumference of the traced outline has a margin of error. Actions Make sure that the power cord is properly connected. Make sure that the voltage applied to the outlet is within the range specified. Check the fuses. If the fuses are blown, replace them with new ones. See "3.2 Replacing Fuses" (page 26) for fuse replacement Perform calibration. See "1.6 Tracing Unit Calibration" (page 8) for calibration. 3 The communication is disabled. Confirm that the RS-232C cable is properly connected. If the symptom cannot be corrected with the above actions, contact NIDEK or your authorized distributor. 25

36 MAINTENANCE: Replacing Fuses 3.2 Replacing Fuses If the instrument is not started even though the power switch is turned on, the fuses may be blown. Replace the fuses with spare ones. CAUTION Before fuse replacement, turn off the instrument and disconnecting the power cord from the wall outlet. Otherwise, electric shock may result. Use the specified fuses only. (T 0.5 A 250 V) Using fuses other than specified may result in fire. 1 Turn OFF ( ) the power switch. 2 Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 3 Disconnect the power cord from the inlet. 4 Remove the fuse holder under the inlet. Pull out the fuse holder while pushing the lever. Lever Fuse holder 5 Remove the used fuses from the holder and replace them with new ones. 37 MAINTENANCE: Cleaning 3.3 Cleaning When the cover or panel of the tracer becomes dirty, clean it with a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, soak the cloth in a neutral detergent, wring well, and wipe. Finally dry with a soft, dry cloth. CAUTION Never use an organic solvent such as paint thinner. It may ruin the surface of the tracer. Never use a sponge or cloth soaked in water.
