1 Classification: Reference: Date: BT NTB June 22, QUEST; WATER LEAK IN CARGO AREA APPLIED VEHICLES: Quest (V42) IF YOU CONFIRM IF YOU CONFIRM Rear Cargo Area Water is leaking into the rear cargo area, There are water stains on the carpet, and/or The carpet is currently wet. Figure 1 ACTIONS 1. Remove rear interior trim and pull up cargo area carpet. 2. Apply bedding and glazing compound to back door pinch weld. 3. Check for leaks at the upper rear corner body seams (left and right side). 4. Check for leaks at the slide door rail plug(s) (for manual sliding doors). 5. Perform rear area water leak test, repair any additional leaks found. NOTE: For leaks from the Skyview roof, see NTB IMPORTANT: The purpose of "ACTIONS" (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure (starting on page 3) as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair. 3 SERVICE PROCEDURE Remove rear interior trim and pull up cargo area carpet. 1. Remove the rear lower side finishers, cargo area trim panels, and rear roof finisher. Then pull UP the cargo area carpet and fold it forward. Cargo Area Carpet Refer to section EI in the Service Manual (ESM) for finisher, trim panel, and carpet removal information. Dry the cargo area. Figure 2 NOTE: Use special tool J when removing the cargo net hooks. Special Tool; J This tool is essential. Additional tools can be ordered from TECH-MATE at option 1. This tool is stored in drawer 3 of the STSS. Cargo Net Hook Figure 3 Remove, clean, and re-install the back door weatherstrip with bedding and glazing compound. 2. Remove the back door weatherstrip as follows: Control Arm Cover a. Remove the cover from the power back door control arm (if equipped with power back door). Figure 4 3/15

Thoroughly clean the pinch weld around the entire back door opening with a clean rag and isopropyl alcohol. Weatherstrip Figure 6 4. Apply a bead (approximately ¼ ) of 3M Bedding and Glazing Compound along the pinch weld around the entire back door opening (see Figure 8). 3M Bedding and Glazing Compound is listed in the Parts Information. Use a caulking gun to apply the compound. 3M Bedding and Glazing Compound Figure 8 Use a finesse stick to smooth any lumps and even-out the amount of compound along the pinch weld (see Figure 8a). 6 6. Locate the weatherstrip seam and align it with the door striker. Door Striker Weatherstrip Seam Figure 9 7. Install the weatherstrip. NOTE: Pull away from the starting point as you install the weatherstrip. This will make sure the weatherstrip is stretched enough to fit correctly. Make sure the weatherstrip is installed and seated correctly. Clean off any compound that squeezes out. Figure 10 6/15

7 Check for leaks at the upper rear corner body seams (left and right side). 8. Remove both drip rail moldings, left and right side. a. Use a plastic trim tool to pry UP on the end of the molding. NOTE: Plastic "Trim Tool Set" J (an essential tool ) is available from TECH-MATE at Figure 11 b. Then pull the molding out and discard it. Figure Perform a leak test. Apply soapy water to the rear section of the drip rails and the upper corner of the rear door opening. Soapy Water Figure 13 7/15

8 10. Blow shop air into the body panels (upper corners) from inside the vehicle as shown. NOTE: An air nozzle with a long tip is helpful for this step. 11. Watch for bubbles in the areas where you applied the soapy water. Make sure you have plenty of soapy water applied (see Figure 13 page 7). Make sure to do steps 9, 10 and 11 for both sides (left and right). Figure If you see bubbles (air leaking): a. Note the location. b. Thoroughly dry the area. c. Clean the area with a clean rag or towel and isopropyl alcohol, Figure 15 d. Apply 3M Ultrapro Autobody Sealant Clear (or equivalent) to the leak spot(s). 3M Ultrapro Autobody Sealant is listed in the Parts Information. Make sure the leak spot(s) are completely covered with sealant. Allow sealant to dry for at least one hour before repeating the leak test. Figure 16 e. Repeat steps 9, 10, and 11 to make sure there are no more leaks. 8/15

9 Check for Leaks at the Slide Door Rail Plug(s) (for manual sliding doors). 13. Locate the slide door rail plug(s) (see Figure 17). This is for manual sliding doors only. The plug shown in Figure 17 is for the left side. You may also have one on the right side. Sliding Door Rail Plug Figure Check the plug(s) for any signs of being loose or water leaking. If a plug is loose or there is evidence of water leaking around the plug, remove the old plug and install a new one as follows on the next page: Slide Door Rail Plug Figure 18 9/15

10 a. Remove the two taillight bolts shown in Figure 19. Taillight Bolts Figure 19 b. Use a plastic pry tool to snap loose the taillight assembly. NOTE: Plastic "Trim Tool Set"J (an essential tool ) is available from TECH-MATE at Figure 20 Slide Rail Cover c. Remove the screw from the rear of the slide rail cover. Figure 21 10/15

11 d. Open the sliding door. Locate the and release the clip shown in Figures 21a and 21b. Use needle nose pliers to reach into the front area of the slide rail cover and release the clip by squeezing it. Release This Clip Figure 21a Figure 21b e. Carefully pull off the slide rail cover. Clip Locations Approximate location of the three remaining attaching clips are show in Figure 22. CAUTION: Don t bend (deform) the sheet metal. Figure 22 11/15

12 f. Remove the old slide rail plug and discard it. Slide Rail Plug Figure 23 g. Apply a small amount of sealant around the sealing edge of the new plug and install it. For sealant, use 3M Bedding and Glazing Compound listed in the Parts Information or equivalent. The new slide rail plug is listed in the Parts Information. Sealant on new plug Figure 24 h. Reinstall the slide rail cover and taillight in reverse order. 12/15

13 Perform Rear Area Water Leak Test 15. Use tape to cover (plug) the 7 holes in the cargo area shown in Figure 25. This is so water will not leak through these holes during the water test. Holes covered (plugged) with tape. Figure Close the back door. 17. Perform water leak test as follows: a. Use two people to check (test) for water leaks. One person will spray the outside of the vehicle with water. The other person will be inside the vehicle checking for leaks. b. During the test, make sure plenty of water is applied to the body gaps around the back door and around the rear area of the slide door rails. c. Perform water test as described above for a full 15 minutes. It may take some time for small leaks to show inside the vehicle. d. The person inside the vehicle must use a light and a mirror as necessary to check for leaks in the areas shown in Figure 26 on the next page. 13/15

14 Check for water leaks in the areas marked with a white circle or oval. Figure 26 If a water leak is found during this test, identify the leak location and seal the leaking areas as necessary. You may also refer to service bulletin NTB (2004 QUEST; WATER LEAKING FROM SKYVIEW ROOF) for additional water leak diagnostic procedures. After any leak repair, perform another final leak check as described in step /15

15 18. When all leaks are fixed and the water leak test is OK (no additional leaks found), reinstall all parts in reverse order. NOTE: a. Make sure the cargo area is dry. b. Make sure the cargo area carpet is dry and clean before it is reinstalled. If necessary, replace the carpet. c. When installing the new drip rail moldings: Clean and dry the entire drip rail. Make sure any residue of old adhesive is removed. Remove the protective cover from each of the adhesive spots on the new molding. Then press the new molding into place. If a seal is missing or damaged, replace the clip(s). New clips come with seals. Clips with seals Figure 28 15/15
