3 GENERAL SAFETY RULES WARNING! READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL INSTRUCTIONS Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS Work Area Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. Protect others in the work area from debris such as chips and sparks. Provide barriers or shields as needed. Children should never be allowed in the work area. Personal Safety Stay alert. Watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Dust mask, nonskid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions. Always wear ANSI-approved safety goggles and a dust mask/respirator when using or performing maintenance on this tool. Page 3

4 Tool Use And Care Do not force the tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed. Do not force the tool and do not use the tool for a purpose for which it is not intended. Do not use the power tool if the Engine s Ignition Switch does not turn it on or off. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the Ignition Switch is dangerous and must be replaced. Disconnect the Spark Plug Wire from the Engine before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally. Always disconnect the Spark Plug Wire before performing any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning procedures. Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. Maintain tools with care. Keep the Mortar Mixer clean. Properly maintained tools are less likely to malfunction and are easier to control. Do not use a damaged tool. Tag damaged tools Do not use until repaired. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool s operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool may become hazardous when used on another tool. Service Tool service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Service or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could result in a risk of injury. When servicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Inspection, Maintenance, And Cleaning section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow maintenance instructions may create a risk of injury. Never run the Engine with low or no engine oil. Running the Engine with low or no Engine oil will permanently damage the Engine. Page 4

5 Maintain labels and nameplates on the Mortar Mixer. These carry important information. If unreadable or missing, contact Harbor Freight Tools for a replacement. Maintain a safe working environment. Make sure there is adequate surrounding workspace. Avoid unintentional starting. Make sure you are prepared to begin work before turning on the Mortar Mixer. People with pacemakers should consult their physician(s) before use. Electromagnetic fields in close proximity to a heart pacemaker could cause pacemaker interference or pacemaker failure. Caution is necessary when near the Engine s magneto or recoil starter. Never leave the Mortar Mixer unattended when it is running. Turn off the Engine of the Mortar Mixer before leaving the work area. Always use the Mortar Mixer on a flat, level, dry ground surface and chock both wheels to prevent accidental movement of the unit. Make sure to keep hands and fingers away from all moving parts of the Mortar Mixer. This Mortar Mixer is not designed for highway use. Do not exceed 45 miles per hour when towing the Mortar Mixer. Excess speed is a major cause of vehicle/ Mortar Mixer accidents. Prior to towing the Mortar Mixer make sure to read and understand all instructions and safety precautions as outlined in the owner s manual for the towing vehicle. Make sure the towing vehicle is capable of towing the Mortar Mixer (weight approximately 600 pounds empty). Make sure the hitch on the towing vehicle is capable of towing the Mortar Mixer. The towing capacity of the hitch is typically stamped on the hitch drawbar. Make sure the Tow Chains are properly connected to the towing vehicle. Do not allow the Chains to drag the ground surface when towing. The Engine Protection Cover (38) of the Mortar Mixer must always be closed when the Engine is running. Do not cover the Engine Protection Cover with canvas/plastic tarps, boards, tools, etc. when the Engine is running. Prior to using the Mortar Mixer, make sure to read and understand all instructions and safety precautions as outlined by the concrete supplier. Keep all safety guards of the Mortar Mixer in place and in proper working order. Care must be taken when backing up the Mortar Mixer. Only back up the Mixer on a straight path. If the Mixer is allowed to turn off the straight path while backing Page 5

6 up, the Mixer could jackknife, causing severe damage to the Mixer and the towing vehicle Before each use, always examine the Mortar Mixer for proper Wheel (8) air pressure (60 PSI cold). Prior to using the Mortar Mixer, make sure you read and understand this instruction manual and the Engine manufacturer s instruction manual. Keep a safe clearance around the Mortar Mixer. Keep all people (except the operator) a minimum of six feet from the Mixer during operation. Do not overload the Mortar Mixer (maximum two bags cement mix per batch). An overload may damage the unit. Do not attempt to move the Mortar Mixer when it is full or in operation. WARNING! Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other construction activities, contains chemicals known [to the State of California] to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are: Lead from lead-based paints Crystalline silica from bricks and cement or other masonry products Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated lumber Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles. (California Health & Safety Code , et seq.) TOXIC FUMES, FIRE, AND EXPLOSION PRECAUTIONS This Mortar Mixer is designed for outdoor use only. Do not operate the Mixer in a closed area or in a poorly ventilated area. When running, the Engine of this unit produces carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, toxic gas that, when inhaled, can cause serious personal injury or death. Whenever possible, use a carbon monoxide detector (not included) to detect excessive carbon monoxide fumes in the work area and in the surrounding area. Gasoline fuel and fumes are flammable, and potentially explosive. Use proper fuel storage and handling procedures. Always have multiple ABC class fire extinguishers nearby. Keep the Mortar Mixer, its Engine, and surrounding areas clean at all times. Page 6

7 When spills of fuel or oil occur, they must be cleaned up immediately. Dispose of fluids and cleaning materials as per any local, state, or federal codes and regulations. Store oil rags in a covered metal container. Never store fuel or other flammable materials near the Mortar Mixer. Do not smoke, or allow sparks, flames, or other sources of ignition around the Mortar Mixer. Keep grounded conductive objects, such as tools, away from exposed, live electrical parts and connections to avoid sparking or arcing. These events could ignite fumes or vapors. Do not refill the Fuel Tank while the Engine is running or hot. Do not operate the Mortar Mixer with known leaks in the Engine s fuel system. Use only Engine manufacturer recommended oil and fuel. MECHANICAL PRECAUTIONS Prior to performing service, maintenance, or cleaning procedures, always make sure the Engine s Ignition Switch is in its OFF position. Allow the Engine to completely cool. Then, remove the Spark Plug Wire from the Spark Plug. Do not alter or adjust any part of the Mortar Mixer or its Engine that is assembled and supplied by the manufacturer or distributor. Always follow and complete scheduled Engine maintenance. CHEMICAL PRECAUTIONS Avoid contact with hot fuel, oil, exhaust fumes, and solid surfaces. Avoid body contact with fuels, oils, and lubricants used in the Engine. If swallowed, seek immediate medical treatment. Do not induce vomiting if fuel is swallowed. For skin contact, immediately wash with soap and water. For eye contact, immediately flush eyes with clean water. NOISE PRECAUTION Prolonged exposure to high noise levels is hazardous to hearing. Always wear ANSI-approved hearing protection when operating or working around the Mortar Mixer when it is running. Page 7

8 MISC. PRECAUTION WARNING! The warnings and precautions discussed in this manual cannot cover all possible conditions and situations that may occur. It must be understood by the operator that common sense and caution are factors which cannot be built into this product, but must be supplied by the operator. UNPACKING When unpacking, check to make sure all of the parts shown on the Parts List in this manual are included. If any parts are missing or broken, please call Harbor Freight Tools at the number shown on the cover (and at the bottom of each page) of this manual as soon as possible. With additional manpower, and a proper lifting device, set the packaged Mortar Mixer on a flat, level, clean, dry ground surface capable of supporting the weight of the Mortar Mixer, its packaging, and any additional tools and equipment. Remove the protective plastic shipping tarp from the Mortar Mixer. Unscrew and remove the twelve Bolts and Nuts at the top portion of the metal shipping frame. Then lift off the top of the frame and set it aside. Use a metal saw to cut off the rear portion of the metal shipping frame, just behind both Wheels (78) of the Cement Mixer. Then set the rear portion of the metal shipping frame aside. (See Figure A.) TO TRANSPORT THE MORTAR MIXER To prevent tripping over the Tow Shaft (16) when the Mortar Mixer is in storage and during operation, always keep the Tow Shaft attached to the Mixer as shown in the following illustration. (See Figure B, next page.) When transporting the Mortar Mixer, insert the Tow Shaft (16) through the front/lower portion of the Frame Assembly (18). Then secure the Tow Shaft in place using the Hex Bolt (14) and Hex Nut (15) as shown in the following illustration. (See Figure C, next page.) Page 8

Make sure Tow Shaft (16) is secured tightly into place. Refer to the vehicle manufacturer s instruction manual for proper towing instructions. (See Figure C.) OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 4. Make sure the Engine of the Mortar Mixer is filled with the proper amount of oil and unleaded gasoline recommended by the Engine manufacturer before attempting to start the Engine. Failure to do so WILL damage the Engine and void the warranty. (See Engine manufacturer s instruction manual.) First, after making sure clutch is disengaged, place the Mortar Mixer on a solid, flat, level, dry ground surface. Start the Engine, and allow it to reach the appropriate operating temperature as instructed in the Engine manufacturer s instruction manual. NOTE: Filling and emptying the Drum (55) of the Mortar Mixer is best done with the Drum rotating. To rotate the Drum, turn the Clutch Lever (19) to the right. 10 With the Drum (55) operating between 20 to 36 RPM, the Mortar Mixer is now ready for the addition of the concrete mix. To determine the proper amount of water, gravel, cement, and sand, refer to the following Table. (See Figure E.) For best results, proceed as follows: Pour the required amount of water into the Drum (55). Add the required amount of gravel into the Drum (55). Add the required amount of cement into the Drum (55). Add the required amount of sand into the Drum (55). (See Figure E.) Allow adequate time for the water, gravel, cement, and sand to thoroughly mix. FIGURE E To discharge the cement mix, release the Drum Lock (72). Raise the Drum Latch (20) up, and pull the Dump Handle (60) down. (See Figure D.) After discharging the cement mix, raise the Dump Handle (60) to return the Drum (55) to its original position. Lower the Drum Latch (20). Reset the Drum Lock (72). Then turn the Clutch Lever (19) to the left to stop the Drum (55) from rotating. (See Figure D.) When finished, turn off the Engine of the Mortar Mixer and allow the unit to completely cool. Then, make sure to thoroughly clean the inside of the Drum (55) and exterior of the Mortar Mixer (see cleaning instructions on next page.) Always store the Mortar Mixer in a clean, dry, safe location out of reach of children and other unauthorized people. INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, AND CLEANING WARNING! Never perform any services or maintenance on the Mortar Mixer while it is running. Before performing any inspection, maintenance, and cleaning, turn off the Engine and disconnect the Spark Plug Wire from the Spark Plug to prevent accidental starting. Then, allow the Engine to completely cool. Page 10

11 Before each use, inspect the general condition of the Mortar Mixer. Check for loose bolts and nuts, misalignment, binding of moving parts, loose or broken parts, Engine problems, and any other condition that may affect the safe operation of the Mortar Mixer. If abnormal noise or vibration occurs, turn off the Mortar Mixer immediately and have the problem corrected before further use. Do not use damaged equipment. To change the V-Belts (47, 48), loosen the four Hex Bolts located at the base of the Engine. Slide the Engine to the left to loosen the V-Belts. Then, remove the V- Belts as shown in the following illustration. Replace the old V-Belts with new V-Belts (types A890 and A950). Then slide the Engine to the right to tighten the V-Belts to the proper tension. Correct tension is obtained when there is approximately 1/4 deflection of the V-Belts at the center span of the Pulleys (40, 41 and 49, 50). Do not over-tension. Then, retighten the four Hex Bolts located at the base of the Engine. (See Figure F.) FIGURE F Thoroughly clean the Cement Mixer at the end of each day s operation. The Drum (55) may be scoured for approximately two minutes, using a gravel and water mixture. Then discharge the gravel/water mixture and hose down the Drum inside and out. Dried cement mix should be scraped out of the Drum (55). Do not beat on the Drum with a shovel or other tools to break up accumulations of dried cement mix, as damage to the Cement Mixer may result. Do not pour water over the Engine (34). Refer to the Engine manufacturer s instruction manual for all inspection, maintenance, and cleaning procedures. Periodically, lubricate all moving parts of the Cement Mixer. IMPORTANT: Whenever a Hub (7) is disassembled for maintenance the following procedure MUST be followed: NOTE: A bearing packer (not included) must be used for this procedure. a. Using a suitable solvent, thoroughly clean the Bearing (7), Oil Seal (10), Castle Nut (12), Cotter Pin (13), and the rest of the parts of the Hub assembly of all old 07h Page 11

12 b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. grease, dirt, metal shavings, and any other foreign materials. The parts must be cleaned, even if they are new or appear clean. Allow the parts to dry completely. Make sure your hands are clean and the bearing packer (not included) is also clean. Place fresh grease in the bearing packer. With the grease-filled bearing packer in one hand and the Bearing (11) in the other, press the Bearing into the grease, forcing the grease inside the slots in the Bearing. Continue doing this until every slot in the Bearing is completely full of grease. To reassemble, carefully slide the Hubs (7) over each end of the Wheel Shaft (2). Insert the Bearings (11) and Oil Seals (10) on the ends of the Wheel Shaft. Screw a Castle Nut (12) tightly on the ends of the Wheel Shaft. Then back the Castle Nuts off slightly so that the Hubs (7) can just move freely. (See Figure G.) Place a Wheel (8) on each Hub (7). Secure the Wheels to the Hubs, using four Lug Nuts (9) per Wheel. NOTE: Make sure to tighten (torque) the Lug Nuts to at least 90 Ft.-Lb. (See Figure G.) Insert a Cotter Pin (13) through the hole at each end of the Wheel Shaft (2) and spread the Cotter Pins. (See Figure G.) Fill the Dust Caps (91) with bearing grease. Then, press each Dust Cap onto the Hubs (7). (See Figure G.) 9. CAUTION! All maintenance, service, and repairs not mentioned in this manual must only be performed by a qualified service technician. Harbor Freight Tools also warrants to the original purchaser, for a period of one year from date of purchase, that all other parts and components of the product are free from defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty does not apply to damage due directly or indirectly, to misuse, abuse, negligence or accidents, repairs or alterations outside our facilities, normal wear and tear, or to lack of maintenance. We shall in no event be liable for death, injuries to persons or property, or for incidental, contingent, special or consequential damages arising from the use of our product. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation of exclusion may not apply to you. This warranty is expressly in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied, including the warranties of merchantability and fitness. To take advantage of this warranty, the product or part must be returned to us with transportation charges prepaid. Proof of purchase date and an explanation of the complaint must accompany the merchandise. If our inspection verifies the defect, we will either repair or replace the product at our election or we may elect to refund the purchase price if we cannot readily and quickly provide you with a replacement. We will return repaired products at our expense, but if we determine there is no defect, or that the defect resulted from causes not within the scope of our warranty, then you must bear the cost of returning the product.
