2 ABSTRACT The interest of Dr. Boyd Dunlop way back 1888 when he patented the first pneumatic tire was to add value to human folk but the reverse is the case today. This presentation is aimed at re-awakening our sense of safety in engineering and ginger our morale in all ramifications as it bothers on tire safety. Without engineers the world is like tea without sugar! Let s join hands to make this world a habitable place.

3 Oftentimes we operate on motor vehicles of different makes on a daily basis and hardly ever pay any attention to one of the most vital parts of the vehicle which are our tires.

4 Sadly very few of us change this unwholesom e habit until it is too late to remedy.

5 Did you have the awareness that tires expire 4 years after the date of manufacture and this date is stamped on the side of the tire? Ignorance is no excuse!

6 Finding out what the date of expiry is on a tire is a very easy task. If you check on the side of it, you will see a 4 digit number stamped on the tire. The number indicates the week and the year the particular tire was manufactured, the expiration date is 4 years later.

8 Using expired tires there is likelihood of bursting and this results in a very serious or fatal accident. On this note, it would be a good practice for us to check our tires and make sure they have not exceeded their expiration date.

9 Proper tire inflation is another important point we miss often time. Many gas stations or vulcanizers will calibrate your tires at 28PSI and if your are going to travel they will even in many cases bring down your tire pressure to 24-26PSI because they will heat up on the highway and the pressure will come back up. DO NOT ALLOW THIS!

Check your specific tire to see what the maximum is for your tires. It is permitted to have your tires inflated a few pounds below maximum allowable pressure but not too much.

16 Each tire has it s speed rating. The speed rating for which a tire is designed is indicated by a letter next to load index, adjacent table shows the speed ratings in Km/h and Mph.

17 Many of us have bought tires in the past and when they ask us the size of the tires we just read it from the old tire and give them to the seller at the tire shop but, what does those numbers mean?

19 TRACTION The ability of a tire to stop on a wet pavement is called Traction. A higher graded tire should allow you stop your vehicle on a wet road in a shorter distance than a tire with a lower grade. Traction is graded from highest to lowest as AA, A, B, C

20 YOUR TIRE:YOUR LIFE TREADWEAR The indicated number gives the rate at which the tire wears out, the higher the treadwear the longer it should take for the tire to wear. Hence, a tire graded at 400 should last twice as long as a tire graded at 200.
