1 7. OEM HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS FOR GXV340 GXV390 ENGINES 1. UNPACKING TESTING THE ENGINE STAGING STORING AND SHIPPING FOR YOUR SAFETY The information contained in these engine handling instructions is intended for use by qualified, professional personnel. Attempting these procedures without the proper training, tools, and equipment could cause injury to you and/or others. It could also damage the Honda engine or create an unsafe condition. Because this manual is intended for professional personnel, we do not provide warnings about many basic safety practices (e.g., gasoline is flammable). If you have not received safety training or do not feel confident about your ability to perform these instructions properly, we recommend that you do not attempt to perform them. 1. UNPACKING 1.Open the box and remove the protective cardboard covers and foam sheets from each engine. 2.Wear gloves and place one hand under the valve cover and one hand just below the fan cover on the opposite side, and lift the engine off the base pad. NOTICE Do not use the side of the fan cover or the air cleaner assembly or fuel tank to lift the engine. The engine is heavy (approximately 74 lbs), and these parts might break because of the weight. 3.If you need to turn the engine upside down to place it on a table or conveyor, flip the engine so the air cleaner passes over the top during the flip. If you flip the engine so the muffler passes over the top during the flip, oil may saturate the air cleaner case and damage the air filter American Honda Motor Co., Inc. All rights reserved 7-1

2 2. STAGING On a packing base pad or fixture Staging engines on the packing base pad or fixture keeps the engine in a level, upright position. This method protects the crankshaft from damage and eliminates the risk of oil entering the air cleaner and damaging the filter. Upside down on a table or conveyor When staging upside down, be sure the engine rests on a jig in a level position. The engine will not rest level without a jig. Be sure to protect the fan cover, fuel cap, and recoil when staging the engine upside down to prevent damage. Be careful not to drop the engine onto the table or conveyor. Dropping the engine may damage the fan cover, recoil, fuel cap, and air cleaner cover American Honda Motor Co., Inc. All rights reserved

3 3. TESTING THE ENGINE ADD OIL All engines are shipped WITHOUT OIL, except for a small amount of residual oil after factory testing. Before you test the engine, you must add oil. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and add enough 10W-30 4-stroke motor oil to show on the dipstick when inserted into the fill tube but not screwed in. For testing, 24 ounces (700 ml) should be sufficient. ADD FUEL You can add fuel to the engine fuel tank or connect an external fuel tank to the fuel tube on the engine. If you add fuel to the engine fuel tank, add as little fuel as necessary for your test. You must drain all the fuel from the engine before storing or shipping. If you plan to use an external fuel tank, disconnect the fuel tube from the fuel tank and connect the external tank to the fuel tube. Be sure to use a fuel filter in the supply hose from the external tank. The external tank must be no more than 50 cm (19.5 inches) above the carburetor on the engine. NOTICE If you fail to follow the instructions in this section, you may damage the fuel tube and/or fuel tank. Be careful when removing and reinstalling the fuel tube. Do Not Pull The Fuel Tube Off The Fuel Tank By Hand. You might damage the fuel tank outlet, which may result in a fuel leak. Be sure to use the staging instructions shown earlier when staging the engine for fuel tube removal. Improper handling techniques can: Damage the fuel tube and fuel tank Cause fuel leaks Affect the overall performance of the engine 2011 American Honda Motor Co., Inc. All rights reserved 7-3

4 When staging the engine for fuel tube removal, set the engine in the upright position with the crankshaft down. Keeping the engine on the packaging base pad or other suitable fixture is the preferred method of staging for fuel tube removal. Having the engine staged on a stable surface will help in disconnecting the fuel tube from the fuel tank. Removing the fuel tube from the fuel tank using clip removal pliers (preferred method) Clip removal pliers (Wilmar W86556) can be purchased at most auto supply stores. They are commonly used to remove door clips on automobiles. 1.Slide the clip removal pliers between the fuel tube and the fuel tank. NOTICE Use light pressure when pressing against the fuel tank outlet or it might break. Damage to the fuel tube or fuel tank may cause fuel leaks. 2.Squeeze the pliers together to separate the fuel tube from the fuel tank. The clamp may move, but the tool should remove both the clamp and the fuel tube in one operation. Removing the fuel tube from the fuel tank using needle nose pliers (optional method) 1.Use needle nose pliers to squeeze the tabs on the fuel hose clamp and move the clamp off the fuel tank outlet. Moving the fuel clamp will loosen the connection between the fuel tube and the fuel tank outlet American Honda Motor Co., Inc. All rights reserved

5 2.Lightly squeeze the fuel tube with pliers and pull the fuel tube off the fuel tank outlet. NOTICE Use light pressure when squeezing the fuel tube to avoid damaging it and the fuel tank. The fuel tank outlet may break under excessive pressure. Damage to the fuel tube and fuel tank will cause fuel leaks. 3.Carefully remove the fuel filter from the fuel tube. Set the fuel filter aside. 6 Connect the fuel supply Connect the external fuel supply to the fuel line. Honda recommends the following practices when using an external fuel tank: Use an appropriate fuel storage tank. Unless a fuel metering system is used, the tank must be located no more than 50 cm (19.5 in) above the carburetor. Use a standard automotive fuel tube as the fuel supply tube. Use a good quality automotive-type in-line fuel filter to prevent contaminants from entering the carburetor. Honda recommends a filter at least 300-mesh or 50-micron. Replace the fuel filter every three months or more often if needed. Inspect the inside and outside of the fuel supply tube regularly for deterioration. Repeatedly connecting and disconnecting the fuel supply tube will cause the tube to deteriorate more rapidly. Replace the fuel supply tube when signs of deterioration are present. Empty and clean the fuel storage tank when the fuel filter is replaced (every 3 months or more often if needed). Do not set the fuel supply tube in an area where the end of the tube can collect debris. Clean the work area daily. Reconnect the fuel hose 1.After completing the engine tests, reinstall the fuel filter in the engine s fuel hose. 2.Slide the clamp away from the end of the fuel hose, and slide the fuel hose over the fuel tank outlet by hand. Moving the clamp makes it easier to slide the fuel hose on. 3.Push the fuel hose onto the fuel tank outlet until it touches the tank. 4.Use needle nose pliers to press the tabs on the fuel clamp together and slide the clamp over the fuel tank outlet. 7 4. STORING AND SHIPPING Drain gas from the carburetor Any gasoline left in the carburetor must be drained before storing or shipping the engine. Running the engine until it stops does not remove all the gas from the carburetor. Gas left in the carburetor will oxidize and clog the carburetor during storage, resulting in engine startability and performance issues. 1.Use a 10 mm wrench to loosen or remove the carburetor drain bolt. Gas will drain from the bowl when the bolt is loosened. 2.After all the gas has drained from the carburetor, tighten the bolt (1.5 N m, 13 lbf in). OEM HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS FOR GXV340 GXV390 ENGINES DRAIN BOLT Drain the oil Be sure to fully drain the oil before shipping. This will eliminate the risk of spillage in the event the unit is improperly stored or transported. Also, damage to the air filter element will occur if oil enters the air cleaner case. Oil saturation of the air filter will lead to poor engine operation and stalling. Use one of the following methods to drain the oil: Remove the oil drain bolt Remove the filler cap/dipstick and tilt the engine Use a pump to suction the oil out through the oil fill tube Remove as much oil as possible to prevent damage during shipping.
