3 WILLIAMSBURG BLACKSMITHS have forged reproductions of early American wrought iron hardware in Williamsburg for three generations. For those who appreciate simple colonial designs and authentic traditional wrought iron, we present this fine collection. Most of these products are made in the renovated forge of the original smithies shown in the historical photograph on the front cover. FINISHES: The products of our forge are treated with a bonded phosphate coating for maximum protection against rust. This process is particularly suited to accept the flat black lacquer with which we finish our product. We also offer custom finishes including a beeswax natural iron (which is not rustproof ). Our hardware includes special pyramid head screws simulating antique nails with deeply cut screwdriver slots. Where these are impractical, flat head screws are supplied. All dimensions given are approximate since handwork will necessarily vary. We also offer lighting, fire tools and accessories for your home crafted by other talented metal smiths and artisans. Entrance Lock Sets Doors using our thumb latches may be secured with modern mortised locks. The sets can be made for doors that are thicker than a standard 1 3/4 exterior door, if specified.

It goes well with our thumb latches and bar sets. L-2 and L-3 provide the additional option of being locked by stop buttons. This second locking mechanism prevents the thumb piece from moving when pressed from the outside by anyone without a key. Both locks require specially made grips which operate the lock inside the door. The L-2 is designed for a thumb latch on the outside and a knob on the inside. The thumb piece is slightly offset so that it sits into the thumb latch s neck, preventing it from falling out of the latch if the door is slammed shut. 6

8 Norfolk Thumb Latches #44 7 1/2 H x 1 5/8 W #45 7 1/2 H x 1 5/8 W Dating from a later period than the Suffolk latches, Norfolk latches became very popular and were widely used throughout the nineteenth century. Our Norfolk latches are also available with bar sets or as pulls with no hole for a thumb piece. The number 44 and 45 latches are reproductions of latches found in our own collection of antique hardware. These two latches are available with brass or iron handles. 9 Bar Sets #601 Bar Set #RB Bar Set Our thumb latches are available with two different bar sets. Standard Bar Sets are used when the grip is on the side of the door that pushes away from you. This bar set is used on most passage doors. Reverse Bevel Bar Sets are used when the grip is on the side of the door that pulls towards you. This is frequently used on closet doors, stairway doors and storm doors. 9

10 Locking Devices Early latches were often secured from the inside by a wedge placed between the bar and the bar guide. Locking buttons, like our number 602, appeared in the early 1800s. A small hole was drilled part way through the wood over the bar. This received the pin, preventing the bar from being raised. When not in use, the pin hung by a piece of leather which was nailed to the doorway. This same locking device was used to secure double hung windows.

12 Pintle Strap Hinges Our pintle straps are designed for exterior doors and gates. They are available in 14, 22 and 30 lengths. #579 14, 22 or 30 L #576 14, 22 or 30 L #571 14, 22 or 30 L #575 14, 22 or 30 L Reproduction pintles must contend with the fact that modern doorways are often constructed from a series of boards rather than the heavy post into which antique pintles were driven. All of our pintles are ½ diameter and designed to fit our 1 ½ wide straps. Type A pintles have been welded onto a plate which is screwed to the door frame. The strap must be bent or offset to align the eye of the strap with the pintle. This form is the weakest of the three alternatives we offer. Type B pintles consist of a long rod inserted into a curled butt plate which is mortised into the door frame in a half surface position. This removes the plate from view and adds considerable strength. It is necessary to know the handing of each door for this type of pintle.
