They are reliable, expensive and efficient the right combation for general-purpose use throughout dustry. 90 TORSION SPRINGS TORSION SPRINGS Stock sizes staless steel and music wire SPEC staless steel torsion sprgs are widely useful to store and release energy of rotation or to mata a pressure over a short distance. Our stock selection cludes staless steel torsion sprgs with four end positions and music wire sprgs with three end positions as shown the drawgs. SPEC torsion sprgs are normally used over a supportg mandrel or arbor. Suggested mandrel sizes allow about 10% clearance at the deflections listed. If greater deflections are used, the arbor size should be reduced. Sufficient room (mimum axial space) must be provided the assembly for the sprg to function properly. SPEC torsion sprgs should be used the direction that wds the coils. In the unwdg direction the maximum load is lower because of residual stresses. Torque values listed are suitable for average conditions. These values can be creased about 20% for static conditions with only slight settg. The SPEC le of urethane sprgs feature multiple durometers. This allows various load capacities with each specific size. SPEC urethane sprgs are compounded specially for optimized sprg characteristics. Typical applications clude vibration dampeng, corrosive environments, high loads confed spaces, cycle and static loadg and nonmagnetic requirements. Material Urethane rubber Durometers of 60A, 80A, 90A, 95A. SPEC urethane is compounded to provide optimum sprg characteristics. Loadg Applications Urethane is a non-compressible material. The load of urethane sprg is obtaed by bulgg of the tube walls. Most of the bulgg is to the outside diameter. The growth outside diameter is approximately equal to the percentage of sprg deflection. Mountg Options Blade Ends are generally mounted over a shoulder bolt or a similar fixed shaft. Clevis Ends are designed to slide over a bracket. Align blade and clevis end mountgs parallel to each other. Proper alignment throughout the operatg range is essential to obta maximum life cycle. Ball Ends are specifically designed to allow for a slight misalignment (up to 12 degrees) over the operatg range of the sprg. The preferred mountg orientation is rod down. Part Specification For our NI, VL, SX and EL series, simply specify the part number the table. For special ends, add a suffix to the part. They are primarily used to mata controlled pressure of a radial lip seal on a shaft and to compensate for lip wear, changes volume or stiffness of the elastomer caused by the fluid, and the effect of temperature changes and time. Other uses clude small motor belts and electrical connectors. SPEC garter sprgs are engeered and manufactured to provide a consistent and reliable product. They feature high itial tension to provide constant load and a special tapered end to assure a strong connection and a contuous near uniform body diameter. 145 CONSTANT FORCE SPRINGS Stock sizes staless steel Constant-force sprgs are a special variety of extension sprg. They consist of a spiral of strip material with built- curvature so that each turn of the strip wraps tightly on its ner neighbor. When the strip is extended (deflected) the herent stress resists the loadg force, just as a coon extension sprg, but at a nearly constant (zero) rate. The constant-force sprg is well suited to long extensions with no load build-up. In use, the sprg is usually mounted with the ID tightly wrapped on a drum and the free end attached to the loadg force, such as a counterbalance application. This relationship can be reversed, however, with the free end mounted stationary and the sprg itself providg the workg force, as with carbon brushes electrical apparatus. Material Type 301 Staless Steel Note Be sure to allow at least 1 1 /2 coils of material on the drum at full extension. The sprg ID will wrap tightly on the drum so that most applications no fasteng method on the drum is required.
