AugustGimmickRally-TomandDonnaEhmann,SteveandBarbWeinstein anddonnaandmyselforganizedafunandchallenginggimmickrally.thedrive andquestionswentaroundthegreatsacandagalaketoendatthelanzi s restaurantoverlookingthelake.wehad18porscheswith38attendeesthat enjoyedthecompetitionofarally.larryroseandjoemuellerwon1stplace usingtheirtiebreakertocapturethegimmickrallyblackbeartrophy. SeptemberPowWowDrive SharifaandRandyprovidedagreatdrivesouth to theredhawknationpowwow(anativeamericancelebration)indownstate New York,attheFDRStatePark.Thistribalcelebrationincludeddances,foodand dress,justtomentionafewofthefestiveandhistoricattributesassociatedwith thesenativeamericans.wehad8porschesand16attendees. Autocross Events AndyDormanhasdoneagreatjobthisyearinorganizingourthreeAutocross events.thelasteventwhichwasheldseptember8th,had14porschesparticipate withmanyfunfilledlowspeedcompetitiveruns. Track DE Events TheHudson-ChamplainRegionwillbehostingadrivereducationeventat WatkinsGlenInternationalonWednesdayandThursday,October17-18.Thisis aneventforalldriverswishingtodrivethefamouswatkinsgleninternational racetrack.classroomsessionstoreviewtheoryandprovideextrainstruction willalsobepartoftheschedule.thiseventisagreatopportunityfordriversofall levels.therearespecialincentivesforinstructorswhoparticipateinthisevent. 8 8 Air Cooled Advertiser Why should I join PCA It sbeenaroundtenyearssinceipurchasedmyfirstporscheandithastruly beenanextremelypositivecarexperienceinmylife.asidefromowningand drivingafirstratebuiltsportscarandmebeinganamericanmusclecar ownerallofmylife,ithasbeenarealsocialexperience.comingfromtheworld ofbigblock427corvettes,442 s,gto s,chevelless s,camaros,55and57chevies, MustangsandhoppedupMOPARs(andIstillloveallofthoseshear pinyouto yourseat rawpowerbeasts),ithasbeenawholenewworldforme.carlovers seemtounderstandandappreciateothercarloversnomatterwhatthemakeor modelandthatexperienceisspecial.butcomingfromtherawhorsepowerworld toaforeigncarworldwasindeedsomethingforeigntome. MyfirstPorschewasnotalight-weight.Ipickeda930Turbo;notexactlyacar Iwouldrecommendforthefaintofheartanddefinitelynotoneforstarters. LikeIsaid,IwasanAmericanMUSCLEcarguyallmylifeandwantedsomething fastandpowerful.igotthatandthensome:inshortmorethanibargained for. Despitealloftheirrawhorsepower,myfrontengine,reardrivemusclecarswere mucheasiertopredictandcontrolthanthisnimblerearengine,reardrive,light frontendedmachine.iquicklylearnedtorespectthismini-powerhouseand despitemyyearsonthetrackandmyviewasbeingaprettygooddriver,cameto appreciatedirtyharry sphrase amanhastoknowhislimitations. SoInowwasaPorscheowner whatcomesnext?likemanycarguys,ihave beeninassortedcarclubsallofmyadultlife.istarttalkingwithotherporsche ownersandtheytoldmeabouttheirporscheclub,theporscheclubofamerica orpcaasitisknown.ijoinedpcaafterihadownedmyporscheforacoupleof yearsandreceivedaletterfrompcawelcomingmeaboard.shortlythereafter, I receivedaletterfrommylocalaffiliation,thehudson-champlainregion PorscheClub. NowIamfamiliarthatPorschesareratherexpensivecars(thiswasnotacar thattheaveragepersonowned)andnotoneyousawwithgreatregularityonthe highway.withthat,iconnotedthatownerswouldbeanuppity,stiff,class consciousgroupthatiwouldnotfeelcomfortablewithandasaresultididnotjump toparticipatewiththegroup.alittledownthepike(ireadintheiron-linenewsletter) aboutanupcomingsocialdrivingeventandmywifeandidecidedtotakeadvantage oftheopportunity.whataneye-openerandwhatarevelationtomyfalsemisconception aboutthecarandthosewhoownedthem.yes,porschesaregreatcars,buttheir ownersturnedouttobeagreatgroupoffolkswhomanyhavebecomeclose friendstobothmeandmywife.ourporscheclubhasbecomeanextensionof oursociallifetobothofus.thisisnotjustaguy sclub;itisafamilyclub.our clubisalittlemoreuniquefromotherchaptersinthatithasbeentakentoahigher level.whileinmostcarclubsitisaboutthecar,trackingordrivingit,inour groupitisaboutthecarandthecarowners.formarriedcouples,thatmeans boththecarownerandthespouse.evenatsimpleget-togetherslikeour monthlymeetings,thatconceptistemperedintotheclubmeetingwithasocial timecomplimentedbyfoodandrefreshments.theclubdoesanexcellentjobof ensuringthatmember sspousesaremadetofeelpart oftheclub.mywifelooksforwardtoget-togethersasmuchasido,itisnotonlyforthesocialaspect,but becauseshehaslearnedtoenjoythecarforallthesamereasonsido.itdoesn t endthere.ihavetwoboysintheirearlytwentiesandtheclubhaswelcomed themwithopenarms. Thisisagreatbondingenvironment,wheremembersand

9 theirchildrencangrowcloserandsharetheirloveforgreatcars.throughout ourevents,thecarpartandthesocialpartsareinterwoventocreateawonderful experience.myonlyregretisthatiwaitedsolongtojoin.ithinkthekeyto enjoyingyourcaristomakeitafamilyaffairandthatbeginsbyjoiningpca. Onceyouhavetakenthefirststepandyouhavebecomeaclubmember,itis uptoyoutomakethemostofthatexperience.thereareahostofopportunities available,forwhichyoucantakeadvantageofoneorall. Atourmonthlymeetings clubbusinessisdiscussedalongwithspecialpointsof informationortechsessionsthatoccurateachmeetingtoprovide ownersmore knowledgeandunderstandingoftheircars.therearealsoseveraldifferentlevels of drivingopportunities,fromnovicetoexperiencedaswellasforjustfun,tolet yousharethedrivingexperiencewithotherclubmembers.forfolkswithstarter drivingskills,therearebasicgymkhanaevents.thosewhohavehonedtheir skillsandwouldliketogetalltheycanoutoftheircars,therearenumeroustrack eventsatsomeofthecountry s besttracks(likewatkinsglennandlimerockto mentionacouple).andthentherearethosemonthlysocialdrivingexcursions, whichallowanownertotheopportunitytoblendscenicdrivingwithahighlighting visittovarioushotspots.theserangefrompastdaytripstakentocooperstown, HoweCaverns,Watervliet Arsenal,Smith&WessonArmsfactory,Walking BridgeovertheHudson,WW1Aerodrome/FlyingCircusandvariouscarmuseumsandart&culturalmuseums. InadditiontooureverchanginglistofmonthlyeventsistheAnnualPicnic heldinjuly.thehighlightoftheyearisathreeday,twonighttrip(pasttrips havebeenheldinlakeplacidandmountwashington)toglouster&salem, Mass.CulminatingtheyearistheAnnualDinnerBanquetheldinNovember, followedbytheholidaypartyclosingouttheyearindecember.thisisabrief overviewofthoseeventsandopportunitiesthatdottheporscheclubcalendar throughouttheyear.thereisneveradullmomentbeingamemberofthe Hudson-ChamplainChapterofthePCA. BeforeIgo,Imustgivecreditandmentionhowhelpfulthefolksintheclub are.simplethingslikechangingtheoilandreplacingbrakesaresomuchmore differentandsometimesmorecomplicatedwiththeporschethanmyoldmuscle cars.withhelpandassistancefrommanytalentedclubmembers,ihavelearned somuchaboutmaintainingandfixingmycar.mostofthejobshavebeencompleted inmyhomegarage.ifyouareabraveheartandwanttolearn,therearemany whowilljumptoteachandhelpyoulearnaboutdoingthejobyourself.allyou havetodoisliftthehoodandyouwillfindhowtighttheenginecompartmentis (especiallyonthe930,nottomentionboxstersandcaymans),sohavinghelpful andknowledgeablefolkswillingtohelpyounavigate downthatcomplexroadis priceless.havingapleasurevehiclehasalwaysbeenawayoflifeforme,but beingabletospotwhatiswrongwhensomethingiswrongandbeingabletofix andmaintainthatcarhasmadetheexperiencesomuchbetter.thispartofthe clubshinesandmakestheporscheexperienceevenmoremeaningful. 15 Following the Pointer Cone Thesecondandthirdeventsofourautocrossseasonseemedtofolloweach otherquickly.oursummerautocrosson,july29thstartedoutabitwet butafterthecoursegotsetuptherainstoppedandtheskiescleared.we startedtheeventwithawetcoursebutasthedaywentonthelotdriedquickly andthetimesdroppedjustasquickly!wehad12competitorsandeveryone enjoyedagreatdayofdriving. TheSummeralsofeaturedtheZone1AutocrossinAyers,Massachusetts.This yearofferedthebestshowingyetforhudson-champlain.thisyearfeatured5 driversfromourregionwhogottoshowsomeoftheskillsthattheyhadlearned atourevents.forthosewhohavenotbeenbefore,thezone1autocrossfeatures amuchbiggercourse,oftenabout1milelong,plussomeexcellentcompetition fromalloverthezone.despitethecompetition,likeallpcaeventstheyare friendlyandalwaysreadytohelpwithpointersoradviceonhowtoshavea secondortwooffyourtime. OurthirdandfinalautocrossoftheseasonwasSaturday,September8thand startedoutquitedifferent,sunnybutthestrongwindsportendedcomingrain. Wehad14competitorsonthisday,allofwhoarrivedearlysowecouldgetan earlystarttotheday.weincorporatedsomeoftheobstacleswehadseenatthe ZoneAutocrossafewweeksearlier,whichgaveanaddedchallengetothosewho hadn tseenthembefore!everyoneadaptedwellandjustasbefore,times improvedquickly.wewereabletogetin10runseachandgetthegearallpicked upbeforetherainandlighteningsweptin,makingforasuccessfulendtoagreat season! Iwouldliketothankeveryonewhoparticipatedthisyear,especiallythosewho showedupearlyeacheventtohelpwithset-upoftheequipmentandthecourses.
