11 DUNBOYNE MOTOR RACING.. SOME INTERESTING FACTS A total of 27 separate car races were run at Dunboyne, including the saloon events held in conjunction with the Leinster 200 Motorcycle Races. A statistical breakdown of those 27 races shows that Southern Irish drivers won 14, English drivers won 7, Northern Irish drivers won 5, and a South African driver won one race. The only driver to win two races at Dunboyne was Dubliner Alec Poole who won both of the saloon car races held on the circuit in Belfast s John Watson, winner of the Leinster Trophy in 1966 driving a 1.6 litre Crossle sports racer, later went on to drive in Formula Two and Formula One. During his career in F1 he won five Grand Prix World Championship races making him the most successful Irish racing driver of all time. He was awarded the MBE for services to motorsport. Paddy Hopkirk, from Belfast, who finished third in the 1959 Leinster Trophy driving an Austin Healey Sprite, became one of the world s top rally drivers in the 1960s. With Henry Liddon as codriver, he won the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally in 1964 driving a BMC Cooper S. The fastest average speed in a car race at Dunboyne was set by Chris Summers from Coventry, on his way to winning the 1965 Leinster Trophy. Driving a powerful 5.3 litre Lotus 24 Chevrolet V8, the burly Englishman averaged m.p.h. He later lost his life in an accident on the Snetterton circuit. Jean Denton, from London, who finished 9 th in the 1965 Leinster Trophy driving a Formula Three Cooper at m.p.h., was a well-known and successful rally and racing driver. She later entered politics with the Conservative Party and served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department of Trade and Industry before becoming a minister in the Northern Ireland Office at Stormont from 1994 to She died in 2001 after a long battle with cancer. The first 100 m.p.h. lap of the Dunboyne circuit was set by John Pringle (2.5 Cooper Climax) during the 1962 Leinster Trophy in a time of 2 mins. 24 secs. exactly 100 m.p.h. Clerk of the course for the first two events held at Dunboyne the 1958 Leinster 200 and Leinster Trophy was Leinster Motor Club president Nathan Lepler. Nathan, originally from Russia, came to Ireland as a young man and was a founder member of the Leinster Club when it was set up on Wednesday, May 4, 1921, at a meeting in Thompson s Garage, Burgh Quay, Dublin. 12 IN RECALLING THE GREAT YEARS OF MOTOR RACING AT DUNBOYNE WE REMEMBER THE FOUR DRIVERS WHO LOST THERE LIVES WHILE COMPETING HERE... BILL RIGG From Lydath Ash in Worcestershire, he died from injuries received when he lost control of his Lotus Elite sportscar at the little river bridge on the approach to Loughsallagh Hairpin. The car bounced off a bank and struck a telegraph pole during the Dunboyne Trophy Race on Saturday, July 18, Bill was in his early 50s. He was rushed to the Mater Hospital in a critical condition but died shortly afterwards. The accident happened on the first lap of the event. His son Charles was also taking part in the race. ADAM WYLIE Aged 25 and from New Calder, near Edinburgh, he was killed during practice for the Leinster Trophy Race on Friday, July 16, He was driving a Formula 3 Brabham entered by Frank Lythgoe Racing. The accident happened when his car was in collision with Jack Pearce s 4.7 litre Kincraft Ford as they exited the village. Wylie s car struck an ESB pole and somersaulted into a field. Practice was held up for an hour while the wreckage was being cleared and an ESB crew restored power to the village which had been cut off by fallen wires. TONY DAVID Welshman Tony David (28) died in hospital a few days after suffering serious injuries in a crash during the Leinster Trophy Race on Saturday, July 17, He lost control of his 1.6 litre Lotus Ford 22 on the approach to Loughsllagh Hairpin, and the car mounted a bank and hit a tree. KENNETH McARDLE Aged 29 and from Kenilworth Square, Dublin, Kenny McArdle was seriously injured when his E-Type Jaguar crashed and overturned on the Navan Road section of the circuit on the third lap of the Dunboyne Trophy Race on Saturday, July 16, He was taken by ambulance to the Mater Hospital but died shortly after being admitted.
