Daytona Historics and Classic 24 Daytona International Speedway, Florida November 11-15, 2015 story by Rick Bennett This HSR international vintage and historic weekend featuring the innovative Classic 24, was such a great success in 2014 with the Classic 24 originally planned for every other year, that HSR decided to do it again in The classic 24 vaulted this HSR event straight to international must-do status. The busy four days had a mix of test sessions, a special Bob Woodman Tires International American Challenge Thursday Feature, two BRM short enduros on Friday, three Saturday morning sprint races and the Classic 24, running from 1:00 p.m. Saturday to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. There was a welcome party Wednesday night, a special dinner Thursday night, another special dinner Friday night and prize and trophies Sunday afternoon. It all made for a festival atmosphere. The weekend was even more special as it was held on the legendary Daytona road race circuit where so many racing legends have been created. #8 Robert Blain, 1975 March 75S; #88 Jules Gounon, 1979 Greenwood Corvette; #94 John Harrold, 1979 Chevron B23/ February 2016 Victory Lane

This was the big Thursday afternoon feature for eight laps in a day full of qualifying and practice including night practice for the Saturday Sunday Classic 24. The entry list numbers had the odds all in the foreign Production Sports Cars favor, 15 to 3 entrants. These were three Mustangs vs 14 Porsches and one Alfa. In qualifying however, Oliver Bryant in #69, 1965 Mustang GT edged out Catesby Jones #19, 1974 Porsche 911 IROC by the tick of a stopwatch. As the Bob Woodman Tires race got underway it was clear that Bryant was not going to lose that position no matter how hard Jones tried. Bryant turned fast lap on the way to the win. That was made easier by Scott Jachthuber #63, 1972 Porsche 911/ST determined to take second from Jones and on occasion turning best overall times to keep Jones busy. Meanwhile cruising in fourth #12 Mike Smith, 1980 Porsche 935; #04 26 February 2016 Victory Lane and first in MP1 class after opening lap pass from fifth was Chris Beighton #45, 1966 Ford Mustang GT to at least make the US-Foreign ration equal in the top four places. It was an entertaining race with ten class winners. The BRM V/GT ENDURO at 10:30 a.m. was the late Friday morning Feature before drivers meeting and lunch. An interesting grid of Porsche, Toyota, Mini and Alfa cars in eight classes. After qualifying, the Porsche parade for the first four grid slots was led by Catesby Jones #19, 1974 Porsche 911 IROC just ahead of Mike Banz #13, 1974 Porsche 911 RSR and Peter Schick/ Brady Refenning #66, 1970 Porsche 914/6. The outcome over the hour enduro however was to be full of drama. For the first three laps the first three qualifiers held position but about lap 4 Jones dove for the required pit stop but troubles ensued and he re-entered in 19th place. Meanwhile, Banz took first through about midway before his pit stop dropping seven spots. The team of Schich/Refenning said thanks and took the first place for a lap until pitting when the team of Alan and Jonathan Ziegelman #28, 1973 Porsche 914/6 led for three laps. Out of the blue when all this pitting had been happening, Jones was steadily working his way back up a place a lap after a few laps in 15th. He took the lead for good with nine laps to go and held that position through llap 26 for a win. The next two steps on the podium were Banz and Schick/Refenning for a Porche 1, 2, 3. A well contested enduro! #777 Franklin Pray, 2006 Porsche. The BRM H/P & GTM ENDURO set as the last Friday race took the green flag earlier than scheduled. This was a big grid full of big horsepower fast cars and a few lesser horsepower but quick cars. Fastest of the first in qualifying was the William Hubbell/Eric Curran #230, 2009 Coyote Daytona Prototype with 5000cc of engine. The smallest quick car entered was the #22, Lotus/Caterham SP 300R with a two liter engine of Jose Cortes qualified 13th. During the first ten laps the first three qualifiers held position, second was Travis Engen #2, 2005 Audi R8LMP powered by a 3600cc turbo engine, followed by #32, 2013 cup with 4 liters. Jose Cortes in the #22 Lotus Caterham had held position but dropped out on lap 10 while all the pit action at the front began. Cars were losing 5 to 10 places pitting but the leader only lost 1! More

on that later. Another surprise was the #43, 2004 BMW M3 of Sarah Cattaneo starting 14th and during all this pit action climbing to second overall! The feat only lasted about four laps when the mechanical gremlins intervened to cause a drop to finish 17th. After all the pit action Travis Engen in the rapid Audi took second with two laps to go and the #125,2009 Oreca FLM09 of Lawrence Huang/Elliott Forbes-Robinson came froma sixth place start to third while the Coyote team took the chequer after lap 18. But wait an obviously short pit stop gained a two lap penalty for the Coyote and the winner was Travis Engen, in second the team of Larry Huang/Elliott Forbes-Robinson and in third Lance Willsey. Historic Sprint Races GROUP 2 & 3 took the Saturday morning green flag for a 9:00 a.m., 7-lap sprint race. There were nine class wins to race for plus the overall title. Aabout a dozen different marque #101 Alan Terpins, 1975 Porsche 911 RSR. representatives made this visually interesting. The race action was equally intresting and exciting with numerous place changes in the first few laps. Peter Schick #66, 1970 Porsche 914/6 had a good start to lead lap one but Jim Peruto #35, 1985 Mercedes Benz 190E starting fourth and with a great couple of laps took the lead on lap 2 only to lose it again on lap 3 to Schnick. They finished the race in that order with each taking class wins. There was plenty of action for the next six spots Danny Burnstein #76, 1970 Porsche 914/6 #40 Jon Wactor, 1970 Porsche 914/6 GT. started seventh, took third by the end of lap one, only to lose it to Robert Smalley #196, 2002 Mini Cooper who started tenth. That dice continued for the rest of the race with Burnstein finally taking third and a class win. One of the drives of the day was Ronnie Randall #24, 1966 Porsche 911S starting 15th and racing to a sixth place. GROUP 5 & 10 s 7-lap sprint race started at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, with a big field of over four dozen cars in fifteen classes. At the start the top 10 it was all Porsche, mostly CUP types with a lone Panoz challenger. Pole sitter #211, 2014 Porsche 991 CUP driven by Etienne Borgeat was immediately challenged by Roberto Bengoa #157, 2011 Porsche 911 CUP who took the lead on lap one, held it for over half the race, lost it to Borgeat and regained it on the last lap to win overall with Borgeat second. The action for the remaining podium spot was contested by all the starters from third through sixth. Mac McGehee #097, 2010 Porsche CUP started in third but just before mid-race had problems and was quickly swarmed by Phil Lasco #114, 2000 Panoz GTS who held the spot until late when Shawn McKaigue #34, 2013 Porsche CIP after a slow start gathered it all up in a late charge took third. Lasco however, took a class win with fourth overall. There was plenty of action throughout this big field. The drive of the race has to go to Mike Vess #72, 2012 CUP who charged from a 26th start to a top 10 finish in ninth place. There were others in this nineteen-through-twenty scrap who had fine drives. Oliver Bryant #69, 1965 Ford Mustang drove up six places, was challenged but took class MP2 in 13th overall. Top Porsche Cayman place was taken by Dominique LeQuex #30, 2011 Porsche Cayman in sixteenth and with a GR3c class win. The vintage part of the race was the #95, 1963 Lotus 23B driving well to take class VBSR. There were many #99 John Coyle, 1994 Porsche 964. deserving class winners in this well contested large field. GROUP 6, 7, 8 &9 Saturday sprint feature was given the green flag at just after 10:00 a.m. It was fast prototypes and fast production Sports Cars of such varied types that there were 18 classes represented by 26 starters so the odds were almost everyone could win a #95 Steve Piantieri, 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider. class. I like that because everyone who starts a vintage race is really a winner! So now to the action on the circuit. As usual Travis Engen #2, 2005 Audi R8 LMP was at the front and on the pole quickly challenged by William Hubbell #230, 2009 Coyote DP starting second but quickly reversing the running order for the rest of the race. The surprise was for third on the podium as Tom McGlynn #36, 1997 Porsche 993EVO staring third was quickly passed by Scott Knott #121, 2003 Dodge Charger who held third for a couple of laps. But there were surprises Victory Lane February

#10 Jim Cullen, 68/10 Lola T70 Mk IIIb; #40 Jon Wactor, 1970 Porsche 914/6 GT. coming! John Reisman #9, 1999 Lola 82K was rocketing up from a ninth place start gaining a place or so per lap to take third by lap 4. But wait there s more! Jim Farley #98, 1991 Riley & Scott Mustang TA was moving even faster from a fifteenth start to snatch third at the finish! Check out the results and salute everyone as a winner! #17 Ward Witkowski, 1989 Lola T88/90. HSR Classic 24 What a great show. It s the newest world class international vintage racing weekend in North America. Organizing a 24 hour race is done by several contemporary groups. LeMans of course is the original and by far the greatest by any measure. European vintage clubs have organized several variations of 24 hour vintage races. They require a high level of pre and at event organization plus 24 hour performance by the host club. HSR has excelled for the second year in a row and will now alternate years with the long established Historic LeMans 24 hour. This allows for all the top vintage endurance racers, celebrities and contemporary racers to enter both is much anticipated. However, before it could be summed up as a great success, it had to be raced. Six groups, each on the circuit for an hour rotated through four times gives a 24 hour race. Each car is on track in four one-hour sessions. Actually about 52 minutes on track with time considered for group change. There is also a required three minute pit stop. Groups 28 February 2016 Victory Lane are scored as the highest honors although there is an overall winner. Our report will be by group with emphasis on strategy and some driving-pit interactions. GROUP A took the Classic 24 Hour green flag at 12p.m. Saturday. There were five classes contested as well as Group A overall at stake for teams having Porsches, Lolas, Corvettes, Chevrons, Lotus, Alfas, Matras, Jaguars and Mustangs. With that mix drama was expected which began immediately with the Gerard Lopez/ Franz Wallenborn #1, 1969 Lola T70 taking an interesting early pit stop strategy. Toni Seller #77, 1969 Lola T70 immediately took first from a second start position. Through all four sessions Toni was in the lead or moving to the lead from pit stops until race 4 problems dropped him to a 17th place. John Delane #50, 1971 Lola 212 starting third quickly jumped to second then to first on lap 6 as Seller pitted and took a late pit stop in race one, thus starting 16th for Race 2. Delane in race three again climbed from an early stop to top three. Then in race three his strategy took him to a well deserved third overall completing 76 laps. The Lopez/Wallenborn #230 William Hubbell, 2009 Coyote DP. #1, Lola T70 strategy fell apart early in race one, being able to climb just into race 1 top 10. Similar problems faced the team in race 2, 3, 4 climbing high up the order, long pit stop, and slow well driven climb back to high finish in each. Although that didn t produce a win, it produced a fine overall second and a class A1 win. The Gray Gregory/Randy Buck #44, 1971 Chevron B16 team ended up with a fine drive from a sixth start in race 1 to lead near the end of race 1 then putting together consistent quick pit stops and staying at or near the top maximizing laps to win overall with 79 laps and first in class A2. Solid class winning drives were turned in by Scott Turner #13, 1966 Shelby GT 350 with 75 laps total giving him the class A3 win and a fourth overall. Class A5 was taken by the team of Alan Terpins/Andre Lara Resende/ Roberto Aranha #99, 1968 Porsche 911 T/R. GROUP B race 1 scheduled for 1:00 p.m. rotated through the four races with the eventual leader always in the top three places. Except for short pit stops the team of Robert Blain/Ron Maydon #8, 1975 March 755, 3 liter car as near as we could see never lost more than five places in the required three minute pit stops per session. They made 80 laps. The second place overall and B1 class #04 Robert Boller, 1983 Jaguar XJR-5; #14 Tommy Dreelan, 1987 Porsche 962; winner team of Jules Gounon/Jean Marc Gounon #88, 1975 Greenwood Corvette looked just as effective, but the scoring crew credited them with a lap behind the winners when all was done which was lost in session 2 possibly. Alan Ruede #21, 1982 Chevrolet Camaro had a more eventful run but with photo by Larry VanScoy

excellent driving did get into the top three on occasion and probably got all there was to be had from his car. One of the noticeable early drives in race 1 was the team of Martin Lauber/Mark Colbert/Wolfang Kurth #25, 1971 Chevron B19 starting 25th and leading the last few laps of that session. Troubles in session 2 dropping them well back to 15th in that session but a strong fourth race gained a fifth overall. Jim Farley/Bobby Rahal #30, 1974 Porsche 911 RSR took fourth overall and first in class B3. Dick York/David Russell #42, 1973 BMW CSL notched up a credible 71 laps to win Class B2. The GROUP C race was dominated by various versions of Porsche 911 cars for the overall win. The early leader for almost all of three sessions was the team of Tommy Dreelan/Aron Scott #14, 1987 Porsche 962 RS America who led most all the laps until just after mid way in race 3 and dropped way out of the order for about ten laps. Although they drove brilliantly to lead most of session 4, their cumulative 76 laps gave him a hard earned fourth overall. Meanwhile the ultimate winning team of Christian Zugel/ Mark Patterson #99, 1986 Porsche 962 had a steady run in session 2, up from a fourth start to lead a few laps. Session 2 almost gave it all away with a late drop to just inside the top 10. The team in session 3 & 4 however, were always in second or first except for #201 Santiago Orjuela, 1973 BMW CSL. reasonably quick pit stop to take the overall win with 82 laps. Eventual third overall and C5 class winners Alan Benjamin/Barry Waddell/Robert Ames #17, 1990 Porsche 964 had a steady run from ninth start in session 1 a really tough session 2, but great races 3 and 4 to be on the podium and take Class C5. Top finishing position for Class C3 was the team of Steve Cohen/Ray Snowden #15X, 1992 Olds Aurora GTS always running in the top three or four and even leading until a problem on lap 6 in session 4 dropped them way down and out of overall contention. John Higgins/Charlie Monk #42, 1985 Porsche Fabcar took Class C2 starting fifth and even leading session 1 but a disaster midway through session 2 lost half of that race and well out of contention in session 3 that even #196 Robert Smalley, 2002 Mini Cooper S; #195 Randall Smalley, 2002 Mini Cooper S. a good run in race 4 could lift them only into a top 10 overall. GROUP D was a very quick group with the winner making 87 laps over the four races, he only missed best of the entire 24 by two minutes. That was Dean Baker #0, 1998 Riley & Scott Mk111b starting from pole. However, that win was not obvious in race 1 when the team of Spencer Trenery/Bruce Trenery, #15, 2005 Riley & Scott MkX1 took the lead at halfway and held it to the end of race 1. Baker pushed hard in race 2 to lead and held it through race 3 and 4 with the Trenery Team almost always in second where they finished overall and with a Class D2 win only a minute and a half out of first. Meanwhile, the team of JC France/Timmy Rivers #59, 2004 Doran JE4 did not make it easy for the top two running all three sessions mostly in second or third to an overall third, just about three minutes out of second. A Class D2 win and fourth overall want to John Branscombe #38, 1997 Corvette who ran a steady race with an occasional peek at third while fighting off the eventual fifth overall and Class D4 winner Alex Welch #08, 2004 Porsche 996 for most of later races. Class D5 went to the team of Kenneth Greenberg/Les Long #836, 1995 Porsche 993 after a start well back in sixteenth to drive well to tenth overall. GROUP E started at 5:00 p.m. as the daylight dimmed. The racing however really heated up with the exciting and well matched race for first and second overall. Either team could have won as they were mirror images of pit strategy and top driving. David Porter #18, 2007 Pescarolo 01 LMP was on pole just ahead of the team of Doug Smith/Andy Wallace and a mystery driver reputed to be Butch Leitinger #38, 2005 Audi R8 followed by Gunnar Jennette #6, 2007 Porsche RS and Chris Carel/Christophe Tinseau #16, 2007 Pescarolo 01 LMP. #50 Andy Kwitowski, 1979 Porsche 911SC. As the green dropped the first two pitted on succeeding laps with somewhat slow pit times not recovering to their start position until the end of race 1. Jennette led briefly but DN Fed by lap seven. William Hubbel/Eric Curran #230, 2009 Coyote led for almost the last half of race 1 and as races 2, 3, 4, unfolded won Class E2 with a sixth overall. Through race 2 #18, led #38 but just. In race 3 those dueling duos were pushed to second and third by the team of Steve Scullen/Gunnar Jennette #46, 2009 Oreca FLM. #16 held fourth most of race 3. In race 4 it appeared the final edge to the overall win was the better pit stop of #38 where Porter lost about four places, which he regained by the end, but the time lost was #63 Scott Jachthuber, 1972 Porsche 911; #159 Frank Beck, 1972 Porsche 914/6. With both first and second credited with 87 laps. Chris Carel/ Christophe Timseau took third. Class winners were William Hubbell/Eric Curran #230, 2009 Coyote for E2, Roberto Bengoa/Lonnie Pechnik #157, 2011 for E5, David Roberts/Mike Skeen #21, 2009 Audi R8 for E4 and David Roberts/Alex Lloyd #12, 2009 Nissan GTR. GROUP F was last to start race 1 at 6:00 p.m. and the last to end their race 4 about 1:00 p.m.sunday. The racing through the night of all 6 groups had dulled the reactions but not the enthusiasm of drivers, crew, workers, officials and this reporter. A breakfast, more racing, mid morning snack and we were ready for the finish and the celebrations. The first race for Group F was exciting and so was race 4. Race 1 pole sitter Oliver Bryant #69, 1965 Mustang led the first laps then a flurry of pit stops for all top teams boosted Mike Banz/ Jochen Mass #13, 1974 Porsche 911 RSR into first for about five laps before Bryant took the lead back and held it to the end of race l and race 2. Unfortunately for Bryant through the ensuing race 3 there were problems and through great driving worked his way back up in race 4 but lost laps made for a disappointing final finish overall. Early on the team of Juan Lopez/Santini/Brady Refenning #28, 1974 Porsche 911 IROC starting third showed smooth steady driving and good pit stops but traffic problems in race 2 and 3 hurt but they put it together for a second overall by the end of race 4. Running steadily in race 1 about fourth and fifth was the team of Robert Spence/Scott Jachthuber #63, 1972 Porsche 911 ST that by race 2 turned into a second then first then holding those positions in race 3 and taking a lead in race 4 for most of the race to finish a well driven first overall in Group F coming up from a fifth start. Great drive! For the third step on the podium the honors go to Franklin Pray #777, 2006 Porsche Cayman along with a class F2 win. Starting tenth he drove up the order to even lead a lap in race 2 and having tasted that rare air ran well in race 3 and 4. Class wins went to Jerry Peters/Jack Baldwin/Brady Refenning #59, 1970 Porsche 914/6 for F5, RK White #26, 1987 Porsche 911 for F3, M. Elicabe/A. Chawhan/A. Rivera/J. Visr, # Porsche for F1 and Bill Riddell/Shane Lewis #16, 2011 Porsche Cayman for F2. #50 John Delane, 1971 Lola T212. INT L/AMERICAN CHALLENGE 1 MP2 O. Bryant/1965 Ford Mustang GT 1: HP3 C. 11 Among the cars Spencer Trenery drove at Daytona s Classic 24 was the # Porsche 996 Cup car. Racing Daytona Observations from Spencer Trenery story by Dan Davis photos by Spencer Trenery, Ben Newby, Gian Maria Traversone Daytona International Speedway is a very unique combination of racing partially on the very high, 31 degree, banked 2.5 mile oval and a flat infield road circuit. It requires very special car set-up and driver capabilities. The Speedway was built in 1959, for NASCAR racing by promoter Big Bill France. He was motivated to move from NASCAR racing on the ever changing sands and pavement course on Daytona Beach to a permanent oval facility to rival Indy. He also had international aspirations and thus created the partial oval and infield road race circuit which first hosted a club race in By 1962 the first international race, a three hour, won by Dan Gurney in a Lotus 19. Expanded races were held in 1963, 1964, and By 1966 this enduro had expanded to now famous 24 Hour. This circuit has hosted Night racing poses some unique challenges. 34 February 2016 Victory Lane FIA International Championships, IMSA Championships, Grand Am Championships and SCCA Championships. Noted California based international racer Spencer Trenery was part of this year s HSR Classic 24 as well as competing in over eight previous contemporary Daytona 24 hour races. He shared some helpful observations for vintage racers at Daytona. Long enduros are expensive and unique. He notes that even private entrants for the contemporary 24- hour race budget over $1,000,000. Even the unique vintage format of six race groups with each group on the track every 6 hours requires serious budgeting and planning and a reliable car. One of the most popular entries is a Porsche 911 CUP car. He estimates costs, excluding air fare, lodging, meals and crew to be: Tires $4,500, shipping the car $5,000, Entry $3,000, $5,000 spares and rebuild, misc. and fuel $2,000. It is not unusual for a team to budget $40,000- $50,000 for the event, although there are teams doing it for much less and much more. This year Spencer and his father, Bruce Trenery, raced in four Classic 24 groups. They placed second, only a minute and a half behind the leader, in the very competitive Group D with a 2006 Riley & Scott Mk XI. He spoke about special aspects of the Classic 24. We enjoy being a part of the special atmosphere. It is a pleasure to meet racing friends from all over the world who gather for this event. Of course, as part of the family run Fantasy Junction we meet many of our customers here, both current and future. The surprise aspect is this is not an ordinary vintage race, it is an international vintage race with all the competitive vibe that goes with it. There are top contemporary as well as vintage racers here whose purpose is to win. His observations for those who plan to race the Classic 24 in 2017 are to understand the uniqueness of racing on the roval. Both driver and car need special set-up. The car set-up is a big compromise because of the G-loading on the banking that requires decambering the suspension, so that under the banking G-loading, the tire runs flat but not on the inside edge. Higher tire pressures are a must. Springs and shocks set-up require special compromise set-up for the smooth sections and the bumps especially the tunnel bump with very a high G-level spike. Driver knowledge, The Trenerys placed second in Group D at Daytona in a 2006 Riley & Scott Mk XI. set-up knowledge, strategy and discipline are key. No matter how much experience one has there are places on the circuit that invite over driving. This is especially the bus stop which is critical to speed around the long banking section to start finish. Many think it is simple, it is not. Practice sessions invite getting each corner optimized in turn. It is surprising how many leave the bus stop practice until last. Put it first! As for choice of cars that is always personal preference but with budget factors. I know there are many smaller, less expensive cars that successfully run the Classic 24. I prefer a car with a big reliable engine and a car with lots of roll cage protection. I was reminded of that when we missed the de-camber and high air pressure specs and crashed our Porsche at 160+ mph exiting the banking. A reminder to not forget our own recommendations. The Classic 24 is a fun exciting not to be missed experience for any vintage racer, but it requires a very unique thorough approach. Join in for 2017, it is not to be missed.
