4 2015 GM #29 HAMILTON AT SASKATCHEWAN GAME NOTES CFL NOTES & TRENDS The Canadian Football League Other than two significant interruptions to support Canadian war-time efforts, the Canadian Football League and its direct predecessors/divisions (the IRFU and the WIFU) have been in operation continuously since Today s CFL East Division has provided over 100 years of football in Canada, while the West Division has been in operation since The January 19, 1958 establishment of the CFL itself with a unified game in the East and West, continued that history and overall since the IRFU began back in 1907 this will be regular season game #: 5, CFL TRENDS & HIGHLIGHTS THROUGH WEEK #4: Close games in 2015: Three of last week's games were decided by 4 points or less and that is now 9 out of 16 games in total. That is 56% of the games this year compared to just 22 % (1 in every 4 or 5) in both and 2014 and Margin of victory: The average margin of victory of just 8.7 points is unprecedented in the modern era of Canadian football and lowest since Since 1958 and the unification of professional football across Canada the average margin of victory has been has been just under a 14-point differential in our games. So the 8.7 margin is off the charts. DI Kickers: CFL clubs are now up to six kickers who fall into the designated import classification. Long the area dominated by National players, Richie Leone, Justin Medlock, Boris Bede, Delbert Alvarado, and Ray Early are bucking that trend (along with Swayze Waters who is out of the lineup now). It is hard to argue with their level of success in 2015: DI Kickers: A combined 33-of-36 FG attempts (92%) compared to the remaining CFL kickers who have also performed well and are a still solid 32-of-41 (80%). 3-1 vs 0-4 / Close losses: Calgary has won three games to lead the CFL and by a total of only 7 points combined. Saskatchewan has lost four games by a total of 12 points. Only one other time in over 100 years of Canadian football has a club ever lost 4 games in a row all by margins of 4 points or less. The current parity trend has seen this happen twice since 2013 Edmonton lost 4 in a row by margins of 1, 3, 3 & 3 points in August-September of Penalties Update: Each week in 2015 has been high, all above the 2014 average of 21.6/game. However, each week has also dropped from the previous one from a max of 30.0 per game in Week #1 to just 23.0 last week. The cumulative average per game for 2015 is now down to per game and this matches the trend of a declining running average in 5 of the last 6 seasons as the year progresses. QB Starters: There is only one remaining QB Starter in 2015 and that is Edmonton s Matt Nichols. Despite a CFL-low 64.7 passer rating he has won both of his starts. Bo Levi Mitchell has the most wins with 3 while three others QB are 2-1 in their starts. Average punt return: Despite the kick cover rule change for interior linemen, the average punt return has not risen all that much. It was 9.3 yards per in 2014 compared to 10.1 in That is a modest rise of only 9%. Pace of play: Despite horrible weather conditions, Ottawa and Edmonton played their game last week in just 2:39. Only one game in all of 2014 took less time than that (Edmonton and BC took 2:37 to play on November 1st). The key I last week s 2:39 game was the first sub-20 penalty game in 2015 (17 in total). Last week s game averaged 2:49. What happens when a club is SACKED?: Number of drives where a team has given up a sack in 2015: 57. Of those 57 drives, the number of times a team went on to score a TD? ONE (Calgary is the only team to give up a sack and still score on that drive). 1.8% of the time. Drives without a sack allowed: 369. TDs? 70. That's 19% of the time. Sacks per game are down 31% SACKS PER GAME BY YEAR 2015: : : : 4.25 Rushing yards per game: After four weeks, there are four players averaging 71 rushing yards per game or better (Min. 2 GP). Of those four, Jerome Messam (76.5), Jon Cornish (76.3) and Andrew Harris (70.7) are Canadian (National) running backs. The last time that even TWO Canadians rushed for yards in a season? 1957: Norm Kwong (1,050) and Gerry James (1,192) yard rushers / 4000-yard passers: CFL is on pace for EIGHT 1000-yard rushers compared to only SEVEN in the last 3 years combined. 15 receivers still on 1000-yard pace. EIGHT QBs are on pace to go over 4000 yards in We had ONE CFL QB go last year.

CFL TRENDS & HIGHLIGHTS THROUGH WEEK #4: 2015 Converts Rule Change Tracking: CFL Convert attempt results through the first four weeks of 2015 (Week #4). Results for two-point converts started strong at 80% in the first 10 tries, but have declined since then to 58% over the most recent 12 tries. For the year, teams have elected to go for two points 27% of the time. The others are 30-of-31 for 97%, not far from the CFL-wide rate in 2014 (99%). Another oddity: For field goal attempts at or around the new convert length, our kickers have made ALL 10 in No FG misses from yards out. Drop in 2-and-outs: Why are there so few 2-and-outs? In 2014 QBs completed an average of 10.7 passes per game on 2nd down to extend a series. In 2015, that is up to 12.9 per game (+20%). In real terms, that means 2 out of about 25 series per game are NOT stalling right away resulting in higher scoring and less of the "two incomplete passes & a kick" drives. 70% Completions: The 70.0 completion % mark has been exceeded only 4 times in CFL history led by Ricky Ray s 77.2% in Dave Dickenson did it twice and Anthony Calvillo once. In 2015, there are FIVE CFL quarterbacks at 70%+ led by Winnipeg s Drew Willy at 77.0%. Decline in Challenges / Officials getting it right: In the first 11 games, there were 15 coaches challenges or 1.4 per game and 7 were successful (47%). Since then over the last 5 CFL games there have been just 3 coaches challenges (0.6 per game), and none of those were successful. Almost TDs: There have been just two kick return TDs in 2015 but another four called back by return holding/illegal block calls. Rushing average declines: CFL team defence has been hard on opponent s rushing attacks. Here is a look at the recent trend in the average yards per rushing attempt; it has fallen from 6.0 yards in 2010 all the way to 5.3 in 2015, the lowest since AVG. SSK at 504 net yards per game: The era of the CFL game is when most team offence records were set; In 1991, BC set the single-season record of an unbelievable yards per game. That era was referred to as Basketball on Grass and the top three single game averages all come from that time. In 1991, BC started with four straight 500+ yard games averaging 523 per game through Week #4. In 2015, Saskatchewan has the second-highest average ever after four weeks at CFL Punting: In the last 65 years, there have been only 59 seasons where a punter has averaged 46 yards or more per kick. That s just less than ONCE PER SEASON on average i.e. the CFL leader is 46+, the rest below that mark. In 2015, there are SEVEN punters currently at 46 yards or more led by rookie Richie Leone at CFL Punting II: The average CFL punt in 2015 is 46.1 yards the highest league-wide average in CFL history (# at 45.8). The current parity trend has seen this happen twice since 2013 Edmonton lost 4 in a row by margins of 1, 3, 3 & 3 points in August-September of Losing the first three at home: It has been a very rare occurrence that Saskatchewan has started a season with three straight home losses. Increasingly popular: Weston Dressler missed the first game of the season but since then has been a more frequent target each week. He was thrown to 8 times in Week #2, then 9 and last week was the target 11 times. Receiver Messam: Messam has 19 receptions in 4 games on pace for 85 in His career-high is only 31 (2013). The Saskatchewan record for receptions by a pure running back in one season is 81 by Lucious Floyd in With his receiving success Messam leads the CFL in combined yards and yards from scrimmage.

7 2015 GM #29 HAMILTON AT SASKATCHEWAN GAME NOTES TEAM TRENDS VISITING Team Notes & Trends - HAMILTON: Hamilton at 1-2: The Tiger-Cats are only one win out of a share of first place despite two losses by a total of only 5 points. Being 1-2 after three games has been common for Hamilton of late 5 times in 6 years (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2015). Last week: Hamilton played a very strong game and fell short by 4 points at Montreal where they have not won since The Ti- Cats were right in it until three late turnovers on their final three possessions. Field position: In their last 20 possessions, the Ti-Cats have yet to take over the ball in their opponents half of the field. All season long, Hamilton has started only 3 drives in opponents territory out of a total of 38 possessions. On average Hamilton has started at their own 28-yard line (ranked #9). The CFL average is the 35-yard line. Against Saskatchewan: This will be the first meeting of the season with the Riders and the third Western opponent for them in four games. Hamilton has not won the season series with the Riders since 2000 when they won by a 6-point margin on each occasion. Saskatchewan has won 13 of the last 14 games played in Regina with the Ti-Cats. #1 Run defence: The Ti-Cats have held all three of their opponents to 80 yards rushing or less and including last year s regular season finale have gone 4 straight games without a 100-yard opponent total. They lead the CFL allowing opponents just 68.0 yards per game and just 4.2 yards per attempt. #1 Overall defence: To the above point about rushing Hamilton also holds the lead in pass defence at 721 yards and is #2 per game at only Overall they are #1 at yards against. Longest wait for a home game: This season will be the first time that a CFL club has ever played their first four games on the road. They do not open at home until August 3rd and that too is unprecedented (except for pre WW II times with much smaller schedules each year). All at once: Hamilton has scoring +/- mark of +21 despite losing twice. The scored a CFL season-best 52 points at Winnipeg in Week 32 but only 36 points in their other two games. Andy Fantuz: Went over the 7,000 career receiving mark and now stands at #14 all-time among Canadian receivers. He ranks #48 all-time with 7,021 yards. He is also the second-best 2nd down conversion receiver this year with 8 already yard receivers: Hamilton has THREE receivers at or just under 1,000-yard season pace so far. Bakari Grant (1,278) and Andy Fantuz (1,224) are well over the pace while first-year player Terrence Toliver (978) is just behind. Brandon Banks: Ranks #2 in the CFL with combined yards per game, on pace for 2,316. Rushers: Only Ray Holley ranks in the CFL s Top 17 rushing leaders thus far. Holley is #12 with a total of 87 yards with a pair of 10+ yard runs. Zach Collaros: The Hamilton starting QB is 1-2 as a starter and ranks #6 in passer rating at 89.6 On a yards per possession basis however, Collaros has generated 29.6 yards per drive to rank #2 overall. He has been limited to just 3 TD passes in nd down conversions: Despite the lack of offensive TDs, the Ti-Cats convert on second down better than all but one team. The Riders are off the charts at a record pace 63.3% but Hamilton is not far behind at 58.3%. The most penalized club: At 15.3 penalties per game Hamilton has drawn more than any other club.
