1 LA Week ending: December 22, library D.C a On December 17, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System announced a reduction in reserve requirements on net demand deposits* of member banks. Reserve requirements of each member bank will be reduced by one-half of one percentage point on net demand deposits up to $10 million and by one-quarter of one percentage point on such deposits of $10 million and over. The new required reserve ratios will apply to net demand deposits during the week of December Due to the two-week lagged reserve accounting system in effect since September 1968, these changes will affect the reserves that banks must maintain during the week of December 30, - January 5, The Board estimates that this action will release about $550 million in reserves to the banking system. Reserve Requirements Net Demand Deposits (Millions of Dollars) Ratio ffective Present Ratio 12/30/76-1/5/77 $ over /2% /2 7% 9-1/2 11-3/4 12-3/4 16-1/4 The last time the Federal Reserve Board reduced reserve requirements on net demand deposits was in February At that time, reserve requirements were reduced by one-half of one percentage point on demand deposits up to $400 million, and by one percentage point on deposits in excess of $400 million, thereby releasing an estimated $1.1 billion in reserves to the banking system. In the week ending January 5, 1977, the effects of the most recently announced reserve requirement reduction will increase the reserve adjustment magnitude (RAM) by about $550 million. RAM is used in computing the monetary base and Federal Reserve credit series appearing on pages 2 and 3 of this release. * Net demand deposits are member bank demand deposits subject to reserve requirements and are computed by subtracting from gross demand deposits 1) cash items in process of collection, and 2) demand balances due from domestic banks.
