1 Quarterly Newsletter Autumn 2016 Monklands Sporting Car Classic Forrestburn Alex Graham s Firenza in class H21 Photo Bill Barr A Forrestburn Hillclimb with the weather dry and pleasantly warm, seems like a rarity and surprisingly there were no new class records but who is to say that Leslie Mutch (40.63s Saturday BTD) won t eclipse the Lee Adams record from 29 August 2010 of seconds soon? - See inside! Other Saturday notables included John Hamilton as the fastest Road Car, John Lowe as the fastest Modified Car and Neil Hopkinson as the fastest historic though the class winners of the H Classes were Tom Richardson, Gordon McRobbie and Derek House (after applying the old Handicap ploy). Thanks to the marshals without whom this event would not have taken place and to the officials, competitors and everyone else.

3 Coulter Autotest 24th July OK I admit it, this is a first, I missed the Coulter Autotest for what must be the first time in years and just as I tried to find some info on the Web site, nothing, no report, no pictures nothing, just as if it never happened. Then I find a results page with what looks like a MX 5 convention, something obviously took place. Apologise to those who made the effort and enjoyed what I believe was a great day and a super smooth new field. As I said there were one or two MX5 s present, nine in fact how many of them were double entered I don t know but with some in class 3 and others in class 4 presumably equipped with LSD s there must at least have been two or three if you belive my pictures and a lot of driver changes. Ironically it was the old stalwart MG s which set the pace and just to mix it up a bit a lone class one entrant in the shape of Peter Marshal in a Saxo who finished 3rd in handicap 1st in class and picked up the Non expert award, well done Peter. Colin McLaughlan had a great day in the PA with Jamie Gibbon in the Midget but when Jamie did his customary WD on test 4 this effectively handed the class to Colin and reduced Jamie to 5th on handicap. The first of the MX5 s was Geoff Burns 1st in Class 4 and 2nd overall, Michael Jenkins was next in class 4 and 4th overall, Candice Cooper and Benny Andersen made up the rest of class 4 respectively this included Benny picking up a WD penalty. The remaining 5 s in class three was mainly a family affair with Fraser Ewart leading the charge from Marcus Gaines, Nita and Rachel Ewart ran a close competition with Nita on and Rachel on 362.4! 5 Highland Three Day Classic Tour Forrestburn Section pictures Bill Barr The Highland Three Day Classic Tour is organised by Lancashire Automobile Club. The event is a Touring Assembly for interesting, sports and classic cars. They visited Forrestburn en route to Dunkeld for the start of the event. The route is approximately 600 miles long and takes in A Roads and country road and is planned to pass through the most attractive scenery between Start and Finish venues. A day off work maybe, but that didn t mean a long lie. We were up at Forrestburn for 8.30 to open up for the Lancashire Automobile Club who were passing through Forrestburn on the Highland 3 Day Classic Tour, which strangely enough takes 6 days!! This was the first day which was not day one as you would expect but day zero, the track was opened up, the toilets opened and we were ready to receive our visitors, there were only 19 cars and it wasn t long before they started to arrive. They did two runs up the hill with various stop/start and slalom disciplines to make it more interesting. We supplied tea, coffee and biscuits to warm them up and give them a sugar boost as yes it was dry but a little cool, there was only one casualty with Mike Ravens lovely Healey s clutch throwing in it s hand, the car was towed up to the farm and was left for the recovery to collect. So runs completed off they went to Dunblane for their next stop. As you will see they had some interesting cars and we look forward to seeing them again next year. Words S.G.

7 On the ground report by Shonah Gibbon Friday the 26th prior to the hillclimb was set up day and as always it was all down to The Dependables to strim, paint kerbs put the banners up and deal with the timing system. It was dry and warm with quite a strong wind blowing so the consensus of opinion was that should the gazebo be erected and the wind continued we may arrive on Saturday to find that it was nowhere to be found, although Salsburgh was put forward as a possibility! Now everyone headed off to get a good nights sleep ready for the weekend. As Jamie was blocking off the track he was confronted by some young men of dubious character (choosing my words carefully here) complete with a quad bike towing a jet ski. It was pointed out to them that this was private property and no they could not come in and then to no surprise they became abusive with their parting shot being to be aware that they would come back and bomb the cabins, oh joy! Well Saturday morning came and it would appear that the imbeciles had gone back to the asylum as everything was as it was left on Friday evening. The day went well with the hillclimb champions being decided and no surprise Les Mutch in the ravishing Raptor, with a time of took the mens award and Leslie Anne Scoular with a pb time of in the Hamster Racing took the ladies award. Well done both. Leslie Anne Scolar Ladies Award Winner! Sunday arrived and again the weather was on our side but we nearly didn t have an event. When we arrived at Forrestburn we found a van beached in the gravel trap just after the finish. It seems that they had arrived on Saturday evening, got stuck and then asked Tom Graham to pull them out and Tom obliged. They then stole some tyres and went off down to the loch and set them on fire then drove up again and yes you have guessed it, they got stuck in the same gravel trap again! When they were approached and asked to leave it was obvious that they were under the influence, all be it at 8.30 in the morning. Now what do we do, as we could not force them to drive away as being over the limit we would be putting drunk drivers on the road, an offence on our part. Decision, phone the police, and after it was explained to them the importance and size of the event that was being held up, they came up within half an hour complete with van, car and then the breathalysing unit. So with a policeman driving the van they were removed from Forrestburn hopefully never to return. On Sunday we had a regalia sale in the now safely erected gazebo and this proved to be popular with a good few sales. The day went well and before we new it, prize giving, tidying up and off home for a well earned cup of tea or possibly something a little stronger. It was during a conversation regarding the cost of motor sport that it occurred to me that competitors should be made aware of the costs in running a hillclimb. 8 be under the impression that the entry fees are all pocketed by the club, if only. The entry for members is and for non members but very little of that goes into the club coffers and it would be very easy for an event to run at a loss. First and foremost the MSA take per driver per day. Other essentials are time keeper, doctor, breakdown, radio hire, marshals lunches and 10 per day, scrutineers, grass cutting not to mention hire of fire extinguishers & radios. Along with track licence and the trophies taking a large chunk of the entry you will appreciate that there is not a lot left for M.S.C.C. I will now get off my soap box and look forward to the next event and any work parties that take place over the winter. Please feel free to come along, you will not be paid but you will be fed so see you then.
