1 Introduction of Thermally Protected MOV SET Thermally protected MOV (Abbreviated TMOV) is a new patent technology in the field of surge protection. The TMOV is a fail-safe device, which integrated a disk varistor and a thermal fuse in a single package. The thermal fuse is designed to disconnect the MOV from the circuit, in case of MOV s failure. Because the MOVs might thermally run away due to the increasing leakage current, or burn and burst in the event of a short-circuit fault. The TMOV can offer faster response owing to its good thermo-coupling with the physical body of the MOV, comply with UL1449 3rd, IEC , IEC , GB and ROHS compliant. The TMOV can substitute the standard MOV and provide enhanced security, never fire or burn, suitable for type 2 SPDs, Type 3 SPDs, AC Power supplies, Solar control panel and etc. SET TMOV series have two versions: one has three lead wires with indication of MOV s failure, another has five lead wires with indication and isolated remote signal. Both versions are ROHS compliant and wave solderable.

4 Excellent performance of Safety Limited current abnormal overvoltage test According to UL1449 3rd standard Four previously untested representative devices of the SPD for each combination of conductor pairs that were tested in accordance with Section 37, are to be connected to an ac power supply having an open circuit voltage equal to the test voltage specified in Table The power supply is to incorporate a series variable resistor that can be adjusted to obtain the short-circuit current (Isc) specified below. The variable resistor is to be adjusted such that Isc equals the values specified in Table The four representative devices are to be energized for 7 hours, or until current to, or temperature within the SPD attain equilibrium, until the SPD becomes disconnected from the ac supply. 5 Solder conditions Wave solder Curve PCB Length 3mm For wave solder, the length of leadwire should be less than 3mm. TMOV8S is NOT suitable for wave solder. For manual solder condition, please note the welding temperature and the time. Do not use solvent such as acetone to clean the products, Avoid to destroy the surface of encapsulated material. 2. Avoid the violent action when assemble for not damage the products mechanically. 3. It should have a reliable ground connection when using these products.
6 Glossary 1. continuous operating voltage (MCOV) Vc Max a.c voltage (rms) or d.c voltage which can be applied continuously at a temperature of 25C, a.c voltage shall be a substantially sinusoidal voltage (less than 5% total harmonic distortion). 2. Varistor voltage V N -, at specified d.c. current, used as a reference point in the component characteristic, unless otherwise specified 1mA d.c. current shall be used. 3. Clamping voltage (Vcla)- peak voltage across the MOV measured under conditions of a specified waveform impulse with current peak Ip. 4. Nominal discharge current (In) The crest value of impulse current with 8/20 waveform that is used as one test parameter for determining the clamping voltage, and for impulse current durability test, it represents the impulse current expected to occur quite frequently in the installation. 5. discharge Current (Imax) The maximum allowable crest value of impulse current with 8/20us waveform for two applications. Usually Imax is (2~3) times nominal discharge current In. 6. Measured limiting voltage The maximum magntitude of voltage that is measured across the terminals of the SPD during the application of impulses of specified waveshape and amplitude. 7. Rated impulse energy (Wtm)- single impulse energy which can be absorbed by the MOV for a specified waveform, unless otherwise specified 2ms rectangular current impulses or 10/1000us current impulse shall be used. 8. Capacitance The capacitance of the MOV shall be within the limits specified by the manufacturer when tested at a sine-wave voltage 1.0V r.m.s, frequency 1KHz. 18 Application Notes 1 MOV s failure indication: The integrated thermal fuse is used as switch to turn off the LED when it is activated. So the MOV is disconnected from the main circuit by the broken thermal fuse. 2 Auto power off when MOV fails: The integrated thermal fuse is used as main fuse and turn off the power of protected device when it is activated by MOV s failure. 3 All protection modes design: L-N, L -G, N-G. 4 Remote warning for MOV s failure: The integrated and isolated thermal fuse will be used as a switch signal from constant ON to OFF, when it is activated by MOV s abnormal heating.
