Beginning with its introduction in 2001, the Corvette Z06 has been a performance icon. The formula was straightforward: increase the power, reduce the weight to an absolute minimum and make upgrades to the wheels, tires and suspension. For enthusiasts, that first Z06 became an immediate track-day favourite. In 2006, the second-generation Z06 was launched, and the reception was equally positive. Co-developed with the Le Manswinning Corvette race car, the Z06 features a high-revving 505-hp 7.0-litre engine the biggest small-block V8 ever made. The car makes liberal use of strong but lightweight materials like aluminum, magnesium and carbon fibre. For 2011, Corvette Z06 ups the performance ante yet again, with an available Z06 Performance Package that includes some of the most serious technology from the range-topping ZR1 supercar. The highlights are Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, larger 20-spoke Competition Gray wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires and Magnetic Selective Ride Control, now available on Z06 for the first time. There s also a new Carbon Fibre Package that includes a fullwidth body spoiler, a body-colour carbon-fibre hood and roof panel and a black carbon-fibre splitter, and rockers. The ultimate in Z06 performance is the Carbon Limited Edition Package. The proof is on the track, where the Carbon Limited Edition car takes full seconds off the Z06 s lap times. Available in Inferno Orange Metallic and Supersonic Blue Metallic, the package includes all the equipment in the Z06 Performance and Carbon Fibre Packages plus coolers for the engine oil, power steering system and rear axle half-shafts. The 20-spoke wheels, exterior mirrors and headlight surrounds are painted black, and the cockpit features suede inserts on the seats, steering wheel, shift knob, door pull and door armrests, along with special racing pedals and Euro-style number completes the package. A maximum of 500 Z06 Carbon Limited Edition models will be sold worldwide during the 2011 model year.

They re also engineered with an eye for efficiency. Top speed is in excess of 300 km/h,* yet Corvette Coupe and Convertible use just 7.7 litres of fuel per hundred highway kilometres.** Corvette Coupe features a choice of a standard body-colour removable roof panel and an available tinted transparent panel. It also offers a massive 634 litres of cargo space behind the seats more than some full-size sedans. Corvette Convertible comes with a standard manual convertible roof. 5 Thrust Every 2011 Corvette is powered by a highly evolved version of one of the greatest engines of all time Chevrolet s small-block V8. The standard LS3 V8 powering Coupe, Convertible and Grand Sport models produces 430 hp and 424 lb.-ft. of torque (436 hp and 428 lb.-ft. of torque with the available dualmode exhaust). Grand Sport Coupe models with the manual 6-speed transmission feature special versions of the LS3 engine equipped with a special dry-sump oil system. It helps ensure consistent lubrication even during prolonged hard cornering on the track. And that s just the beginning of the story. The larger displacement 7.0-litre (427 cu. in.) LS7 V8 that powers Z06 includes a host of race-derived technologies, including titanium valves and connecting rods. Horsepower peaks at 505 at 6300 rpm. The LS7 engine also puts out 470 lb.-ft. of peak torque, with well over 300 lb.-ft. available from as low as 1000 rpm. Then there s the stunning intercooled and supercharged LS9 engine powering the ZR1. With outputs of 638 SAE-certified hp and 604 lb.-ft. of torque, it s the most powerful production engine in Chevrolet s history. Both the LS7 and LS9 are handassembled at the GM Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan. It produces 638 hp, in part due to its 4-lobe Eaton Twin Vortices Series supercharger with intercooler.

6 Reflexes From a technical point of view, when ultra-high performance is your goal, two things are true. One, structural strength is an absolute necessity. And two, weight is the enemy. Corvette achieves strength without excess weight by utilizing a unique structure featuring hydroformed side rails and a central backbone precision-fabricated from steel or aluminum, depending on the model. It s the same architecture used in the C6.R race car. sla rear suspension To this high-tech platform, the Corvette team fits a competition-proven short/long arm (SLA), or double wishbone, suspension front and rear the same design favoured in many top racing series. Composite leaf springs help reduce weight even further, compared with conventional coils. Then it s time for the high-tech electronics. Active Handling, standard on every model, helps improve stability and eliminate unwanted possible oversteer or understeer situations. Launch Control is included on every Corvette with a manual transmission, to ensure power is laid down efficiently for optimal acceleration. 8 Grand Sport Coupe For performance and efficiency, Corvette Grand Sport is in a class by itself. In the 2010 Car and Driver Magazine s Lightning Lap, a Grand Sport Coupe lapped faster than the Audi R8 V10 and the Porsche 911 Carrera S. In fact, only two street-legal cars beat it: a $480,000 Lamborghini Murciélago LP SV and the overall Lightning Lap champion, the Corvette ZR1. On the test track, Grand Sport Coupe delivers 1g of lateral acceleration and goes from 0 to 96 km/h in less than four seconds. Yet it consumes just 12.9 litres of fuel per hundred kilometres in the city and a mere 7.7 litres per hundred highway kilometres.* That s what engineers call bandwidth. Grand Sport models combine the premium sports-car engineering of Corvette Coupe and Convertible with the track-oriented suspension and braking componentry of Z06. That means wider front and rear tracks and more aggressive dampers, springs and stabilizer bars, plus Grand Sport-specific gear ratios for the manual transmission. The braking system is upgraded with vented 355-mm rotors and 6-piston calipers up front and vented 340-mm rotors and 4-piston calipers in the rear. 9 Grand Sport Convertible the original Corvette Grand Sport echos from the formative days of the 1960s and was the product of an intense factory effort to defeat purpose-built north american and european competitors on race tracks around the world. these special corvettes were engineered for ultralight weight with an extensive use of aluminum. there was a 377 cu. in. small-block v8 under the hood and stopping power was supplied by an early use of 4-wheel disc brakes. only five prototypes three coupes and two roadsters were ever actually built. all five are still in existence today. the original grand sports showed the potential of chevrolet to beat the world s best sports cars and now are crown jewels of corvette collectors, worth millions of dollars apiece. Grand Sport Convertible offers the ultimate in top-down Corvette performance. The look is low and powerful, with flared fenders and functional brake cooling ducts, and Grand Sport Convertible boasts the same Z06-based chassis upgrades as its Coupe stablemate. 10 Pedigree Corvette has been challenging Europe s finest on the track since the first Corvette racers took to the Sebring road course back in March of Over the years, the competition has included Ferrari, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Porsche, and some of the world s best drivers have piloted racing Corvettes. Corvette also marked a competition milestone in 2010 the 50th anniversary of its first appearance in Le 24 Heures du Mans, the French classic that is the Mount Everest of endurance races. It s no exaggeration to say that these experiences including 9 consecutive American Le Mans Series Manufacturers Championships and 6 Le Mans GT1 victories in 10 years have made Corvette what it is today. The lessons learned on the racetrack have helped make the production Corvette stronger, lighter, faster, more efficient and more aerodynamic. Carbon-fibre body panels, front splitters, dry-sump oil systems, rear diffusers, functional cooling ducts, 6-piston brake calipers, carbon ceramic brake rotors and many of the refinements found in today s Corvette engines were proven in competition before they made it to the street. The Corvette testing and development process also involves testing production models in race-like conditions, including grueling 24-hour validation tests at a variety of race tracks. The discipline of racing continues to make road-going Corvettes safer, faster, more powerful and more agile than their predecessors. in 2009, corvette moved mid-season from the alms gt1 class to the even more competitive gt2 class, taking on the likes of ferrari, bmw and porsche.
