Consequently, the permanent standing Army was very small. However, universal male conscription meant that Austria had a very large trained reserve pool that would form Austria s Landwehr militia forces in wartime, as well as sizeable chunks of the main reserve striking force the Panzergrenadier Division. Another curious consequence of the post-war limitations was that Austria was not permitted any guided weapons, so no ATGMs, SAMs, AGMs or AAMs! This deficiency was rectified following the CFE Treaty in the late 1980s and Austria bought Swedish BILL ATGMs and RBS-70 SAMs, as well as new Saab Draken fighters and AAMs to go with them. However, none of this was fielded before Despite being neutral, Austria was under no illusions that the most likely future war would be fought against the Warsaw Pact (possibly also including Yugoslavia). The Army was therefore organised to fight a defensive war against assaults from Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Yugoslavia, with extensive networks of permanent fortifications manned by the Landwehr. The only organisational information I have is that they had x3 companies. I m presuming that they also had a war role and had equipment to fulfil that role, so I ve tentatively given them the Jäger TO&E.

6 Austrian Landwehr Regiment 1980s (a) (a) It is not possible to produce a single TO&E for a Landwehr Infantry Regiment, as virtually every regiment had a unique organisation (on a theme). Each Landwehr Regiment was purely responsible for defending its own locality and the organisation was therefore based on the local defence plan. The Blocking Companies would hold fixed fortifications, while the Jagdkampf Companies conducted resistance missions behind enemy lines, the Watch Companies provided security at key locations and the Landwehr Battalions provided a mobile counter-attack force. However, these weren t special forces in the traditional sense, being more local militia resistance forces. These units were liberally furnished with permanent fixed defences and Bofors Guns used in the direct-fire role (presumably against water craft?). Organisation varied wildly from company to company, so this is only a rough guess as to how these units might have been organised. (b) May replace up to x3 Infantry with: rpak M40 106mm Recoilless Rifle Flak 58 20mm Anti-Aircraft Gun Bofors L70 40mm Anti-Aircraft Gun CWAS-17 CWAS-20 CWAS-19 (a) Blocking Companies were local militia units with the wartime mission of defending specific permanent fortifications, defending key terrain. These locations were liberally furnished with permanent pillboxes, trenches, bunkers and fixed defences such as dug-in tank turrets. Organisation varied wildly from company to company, so this is only a rough guess as to how these units might have been organised. (b) May replace up to x3 Infantry with: rpak M40 106mm Recoilless Rifle Flak 58 20mm Anti-Aircraft Gun CWAS-17 CWAS-20 (c) Austria had enough fixed tank turrets across the country to provide an average of x2 or x3 turrets per Blocking Company. These were mostly Centurion 105mm turrets (x74), with the rest being M36 & M47 90mm turrets (x74), M4 Sherman 75mm turrets (x24), T-34 85mm turrets (x12) and 20pdr (83.4mm) Charioteer turrets (x28). Austria installed a further x mm Centurion turrets across the country in May therefore replace (on average), x2 or x3 Landwehr Infantry with: Centurion 105mm Fixed Tank Turret CWAS-36 M47 90mm Fixed Tank Turret CWAS-37 M24 75mm Fixed Tank Turret CWAS-38 M36 90mm Fixed Tank Destroyer Turret CWAS-39 T-34/85 85mm Fixed Tank Turret CWAS-40 Charioteer 20pdr Fixed Tank Destroyer Turret CWAS-41 From 1985; may replace (on average) x3 or x4 Landwehr Infantry with tank turrets. (def) (d) For every turret deployed on-table, also deploy an identical dummy turret. The enemy will only be able to identify a dummy turret when it is close-assaulted (it will be automatically captured) or by a logical process of elimination. (e) Tank turrets are treated in all respects as vehicles with a 0/0 movement factor i.e. they count as Vehicle targets for Spotting, Direct Fire, Indirect Fire, Air Attack and Close Assault. However, they may rotate in place to change front/rear arc facing. Any Manoeuvre Check or Close Assault result requiring the turret to withdraw will eliminate the turret (i.e. the crew abandon the turret). (f) One school of thought suggests that tank turret bunkers should class as Bogged vehicles (+1 to hit them). However, I would argue that these were very small targets compared a whole tank, so I would keep it simple and treat them as a normal vehicle target.
