1 CONTEMPORARY ASSAULT RIFLES Assault rifles appeared during World War II. The concept was to give the ground soldier a weapon which could fire rapidly while in close combat, and have good precision for long range firing. Heavy rifles, like the first Kalashnikov rifles, or weapons like the G-3, have been progressively replaced by light caliber assault rifles, like the M-16, which are more accurate and less lethal : an incapacitated soldier causes more trouble to an army than a dead one. This modification therefore allows the use of butts folding. The weapon has the advantage of being extremely flexible, practical both in CQB (Close Combat Battle) over distances of engagement important.
