Retrospective action is not required except as specified below. Retrospective action shall be taken in respect of existing non-compliant arrangements: a) Non-standard speed indicators (eg cut-out signs ) are to be replaced with signs conforming to GK/RT0033 by December 03. b) Where differential speed restrictions are applied by use of the two-thirds rule on Southern Zone, full signing of differential speeds in accordance with this document shall be provided by December 03. Any Railway Group member deviating from the requirements set out in this document shall ensure that the situation is regularised in accordance with the requirements of GA/RT6001, GA/RT6004, or GA/RT6006. 7 Document to be withdrawn as of 04/06/11 published on 05/03/11 Railway Group Standard Date December 00 Page 5 of 53 B1 Purpose B2 Scope Part B The purpose of this document is to set out the requirements for the signing and advice of permissible speeds, temporary speed restrictions and emergency speed restrictions on running lines to ensure that train drivers have sufficient information to control their trains safely. The overall scope of Railway Group Standards is as specified in Appendix A of GA/RT6001. This document contains requirements which are applicable to the duty holders of the Infrastructure Controller category of Railway Safety Case: Specifically the contents of this document apply to warnings and indications to train drivers for all types of speed change, including temporary and emergency speed restrictions, where information is provided by means of lineside signs. Part B of this document contains general requirements for warnings and indications of changes in permissible speed and speed restrictions. Part C sets out requirements for permissible speeds, and Part D sets out requirements for temporary and emergency speed restrictions. This document applies only to the provision of speed information by means of lineside signs for speeds up to 125 mph. It does not cover the provision of speed information to the driver by means of in-cab displays or the requirements for automatic train protection. GE/RT8012 contains additional requirements for provision of speed information for tilting trains operating at enhanced permissible speeds. This document () does not specify details of the signs and other equipment to be used for signing speed restrictions (see GK/RT0033 and GC/RT60). B3 Definitions Attainable Speed (as applicable to this document) The maximum speed that any permitted type of rolling stock can achieve over a specific section of line, where it is not possible for any rolling stock authorised to operate on the line to attain the permissible speed. Attainable speed can be used as the basis of deceleration distance calculations for temporary speed restrictions. Deceleration Distance The minimum distance at which a warning indicator (for a permissible speed) or a warning board (for a temporary or emergency speed restriction) shall be positioned approaching the start of the change in speed to which it applies in order to ensure that all trains have sufficient warning to be able to conform to the required reduction in speed. Differential Speed A permissible speed or speed restriction applicable to a particular type of train, where different values of speed are applicable to different types of train over the same section of line. Differential speeds include: a) Standard Differential Speeds Two values of permissible speed, or two different speed values for a temporary speed restriction, each of which is applicable to one of two standard categories of train, as defined in the Rule Book. Non-standard differential speeds are not applicable to temporary or emergency speed restrictions. Emergency Speed Restriction A speed restriction not shown in the Weekly Operating Notice (WON), or which is more restrictive than shown, or which applies at a time other than that shown in the WON. Permissible Speed The authorised maximum speed over a section of line, either for all trains or (where differential speeds are applied) for specific types of train, as detailed in the Sectional Appendix. Spate Indicator A trackside indicator which informs the driver that a temporary speed restriction has been withdrawn earlier than published or has not been applied. Temporary Speed Restriction A speed, less than the permissible speed, applied for a pre-planned period not normally exceeding 6 months. Weekly Operating Notice The official printed notice which includes advice to drivers of temporary speed restrictions and alterations to permissible speeds. GO/RT39 details requirements for the format and contents of the WON. B4 General Requirements B4.1 Authorisation of Permissible Speed B4.1.1 The values of all permissible speeds and temporary speed restrictions shall be authorised by the Infrastructure Controller. Requirements for the authorisation of alterations to permissible speeds are set out in GK/RT0007. On lines which are used in both directions, it is permissible to authorise different speeds for each direction of travel. Where differential speeds are applied, the Infrastructure Controller shall authorise the value of the permissible speeds and temporary speed restrictions for each type of vehicle using the line. B4.1.2 The provision and positioning of all signs and associated Automatic Warning System (AWS) equipment for permissible speeds shall be authorised by the Infrastructure Controller. B4.2 Clarity of Signing B4.2.1 The signing of permissible speeds and temporary and emergency speed restrictions shall give clear and unambiguous information to the driver and shall be applied, so far as is practicable, in a consistent manner along each line of route. B4.2.2 Boards and indicators provided in connection with the signing of permissible speeds and temporary and emergency speed restrictions shall wherever practicable be positioned to the left of the track to which they apply in the direction of travel. Where it is not practicable to find a suitable position to the left of the track, it is permissible to position indicators to the right of the track provided that this will not cause confusion and the indicators are not likely to be misread as applying to another line. 6 RAILTRACK

B4.2.4 Boards and indicators provided in connection with the signing of permissible speeds and temporary and emergency speed restrictions shall not be positioned part way through points and crossings, to avoid confusion about the line to which they apply. B4.2.5 The positioning of all boards and indicators and associated AWS equipment shall be considered in relation to other signs, signals and equipment, in order to ensure that the overall display of information to the train driver is clear and is not liable to cause confusion. B4.2.6 The positions of boards, indicators and associated AWS equipment shall also be selected as far as practicable to avoid the risk of distracting drivers at locations where they are required to give particular attention to the control of the train, for example on the approach to stopping positions at stations or signals. B4.2.7 Where train protection systems are in use, the positioning of boards and indicators shall take into account the warning and intervention activities of such systems to avoid confusion to the driver. B4.2.8 Where application of the requirements of this document in particular circumstances, such as in complex layouts, is not able to achieve the objective of providing clear and unambiguous information to the driver, the Infrastructure Controller shall ensure that an acceptable solution is found which meets this objective. Possible solutions include: a) alterations to the proposed geographical limits of the permissible speeds or speed restrictions. b) alterations to the speed value(s) of the permissible speeds or speed restrictions. c) alteration to the signalling arrangements. B4.3 Display of Speed on Signs B4.3.1 Requirements for the form of lineside signs provided in connection with permissible speeds and temporary and emergency speed restrictions are defined in GK/RT0033. B4.3.2 All speeds shall be displayed in miles per hour. B4.3.3 Where differential speeds are permitted, these shall be displayed vertically with the lower (or lowest) speed at the top and the higher speed(s) beneath. B4.4 Provision of AWS and TPWS Equipment B4.4.1 AWS equipment shall be provided in association with warning indicators and warning boards as required by Parts C and D of this document. Where AWS equipment is provided it shall generally be positioned at 183 m (0 yd) before its associated warning board or warning indicator. It shall be located not less than 4 seconds from any other AWS equipment and shall not be located between any other AWS equipment and its associated signal, board or indicator. The RAILTRACK 7

B4.4.2 GE/RT8030 sets out the requirements for the provision of TPWS equipment on the approach to reductions in permissible speed and temporary speed restrictions. (See also section D3.2.2 of this document.) B4.5 Determination of Deceleration Distance B4.5.1 The positioning of warning indicators or warning boards on the approach to speed reductions shall be based on the distance required to decelerate from the permissible speed on the approach (except as permitted in section B4.5.2) to the reduced permissible speed or speed restriction. The warning indicator or warning board shall be positioned not less than the minimum applicable deceleration distance before the speed indicator. Where differential speeds apply, either to the reduced permissible speed / speed restriction or on the approach, the positioning of the warning indicator or warning board shall allow for the greatest deceleration distance required by any train, taking into account the relevant approach speed and speed reduction for each type of train. All warning indicators/boards relating to differential speeds commencing at the same point shall be placed at the same position. B4.5.2 For a temporary speed restriction at a location where none of the rolling stock authorised to use the line is capable of achieving the permissible speed (or the differential permissible speed applicable to that type of train), the Infrastructure Controller is permitted to authorise the use of the maximum attainable speed for deceleration distance calculations. The justification for this decision shall be recorded. B4.5.3 The tables in Appendix B of this document shall normally be used to calculate deceleration distances. These tables are applicable to the braking performance of all types of train. B4.5.4 Deceleration tables for trains with higher braking rates (analogous to Appendices 2 and 3 of GK/RT0034) have not been published. On lines where signal spacing distances based on Appendices 2 and 3 of GK/RT0034 have been used, the deceleration distance shown in Appendix B of this document for some speed reductions will be greater than the required signal spacing (from the first caution aspect to a signal at danger). Where the signal spacing distance shown in Appendix 2 or Appendix 3 of GK/RT0034 for the applicable approach speed is less than the deceleration distance shown in Appendix B of this document, it is permissible to use the appropriate signal spacing distance as the required deceleration distance instead of the distance shown in Appendix B. Where this is done, signal spacing distances from Appendix 2 or Appendix 3 of GK/RT0034 shall be used as deceleration distances only for the types of train for which those signal spacing distances are applicable. Where such reduced deceleration distances are applied in connection with differential speeds, the application shall ensure that only trains which meet the required braking performance (for the particular appendix of GK/RT0034 used) are permitted to operate at the higher speeds for which the reduced deceleration distances are used. B4.5.5 Where authorised by the Infrastructure Controller, it is permissible to calculate deceleration distances from appropriate braking information for the trains concerned, instead of using the tables in this document or GK/RT0034. Where such distances are used, appropriate measures shall be applied to ensure that only trains with a braking performance sufficient to comply with the reduced 8 RAILTRACK

B4.6 Consultation with Train Operators B4.6.1 The Infrastructure Controller shall consult with the Train Operator(s) in respect of: a) proposed signing arrangements and positioning of signs for permissible speeds; b) proposed signing arrangements, positioning of signs and arrangements for implementation and withdrawal of temporary speed restrictions in cases of complex engineering work. B4.6.2 This requirement for consultation with Train Operators is in addition to any involvement of the Train Operator in sighting committee work in respect of the provision of signs for permissible speeds, as required by GK/RT0037. The alterations shall subsequently be published in the next available Periodical Operating Notice (PON) pending reissue of the appropriate Table A entry of the Sectional Appendix. C2.2 Requirements for the format of entries in the WON, PON and Sectional Appendix are given in GO/RT36, GO/RT39 and GO/RT3210. Requirements for train operators to ensure the provision of safety information to drivers are set out in GO/RT3251. C3 Permissible Speed Indicators C3.1 Permissible Speed Indicators: General C3.1.1 Permissible speed indicator(s) displaying the appropriate speed(s) shall be provided for every increase or decrease of permissible speed and shall be positioned where the change of speed occurs (see Figure C1). C3.1.3 Speed indicators shall not normally be provided for non-running moves or unsignalled movements. Where speed indicators are provided for connections leading towards sidings, yards or depots, the signing shall be arranged to ensure that there is no risk of confusion, particularly where the permissible speed in the sidings beyond the connection is lower than that through the connection. C3.2 Permissible Speed Indicators: Differential Speeds C3.2.1 It is permissible to apply a maximum of three different permissible speeds for different types of train over any section of line. These can include standard and non-standard differential speeds as defined in section B3. The permitted combinations are: a) standard differential speeds applicable to the two standard categories of train, as defined in the Rule Book, section U(iii). b) a single standard speed together with one or two non-standard differential speeds applicable to specified types of train: the standard speed shall apply to all types of train other than the specified types. c) standard differential speeds applicable to the two standard categories of train together with one non-standard differential speed applicable to a specified type of train. For the purposes of this section, an enhanced permissible speed as defined in GE/RT8012 shall be considered as a non-standard differential speed. C3.2.2 Speed indicators for standard differential speeds shall comprise a single indicator displaying the lower speed above the higher (see Figure C2). / Figure C2 C3.2.3 Where non-standard differential speeds apply, a separate speed indicator for the higher (non-standard) speed shall be provided below the standard speed indicator (see Figure C3). The indicator for the higher speed shall incorporate an indication of the class or classes of train to which it applies, as set out in the Rule Book, section U(iii). 12 RAILTRACK

15 Document to be withdrawn as of 04/06/11 published on 05/03/11 Railway Group Standard Date December 00 Page 13 of 53 HST 60 60/ HST 75 /75/ Figure C3 C3.3 Permissible Speed Indicators: Converging Junctions C3.3.1 Where the permissible speed beyond a converging junction is the same as that on the higher speed route through the junction, and is higher than the speed on the converging route, a speed indicator is not required for trains approaching from the converging route. C3.3.2 It is permissible to provide a miniature speed indicator as a repeating sign immediately after a converging junction where the permissible speed beyond the junction is higher than that on the converging route (see Figure C4). Such a sign shall not be provided where it will fall within the deceleration distance approaching a lower speed for which warning has already been given (as shown in Figure C17). Miniature Speed Indicator Figure C4 C3.4 Permissible Speed Indicators: Diverging Junctions C3.4.1 A speed indicator with an arrow indicating the direction of the diverging route shall be provided immediately before any diverging junction (including a facing crossover) over which there is a reduction in speed (see Figure C5). Figure C5 C3.4.2 Where a lower permissible speed applies equally to both routes, a single permissible speed indicator shall be provided without directional arrows (see Figure C6). RAILTRACK 13

Arrows shall be provided to indicate any divergence. (See Figures C7 and C8.) 125 Figure C7 125 Figure C8 C4 Permissible Speed Warning Indicators C4.1 Permissible Speed Warning Indicators: General C4.1.1 Warning indicators shall be provided approaching each speed reduction, where the permissible speed on the approach is 60 mph or greater and the required reduction in speed is one third or more of that permissible speed. A warning indicator need not be provided where the signalling is designed to enforce a reduction in speed (eg over a diverging route) and compliance with the signal aspects will ensure that the required reduction is achieved. C4.1.2 Warning indicators shall be positioned as close as possible to (but not less than) the appropriate deceleration distance to the speed indicator. Any temporary speed restrictions shall be ignored in determining the deceleration distance. C4.1.3 Where there are two or more successive reductions in permissible speed within a distance of 3.2 km (2 miles), none of which individually represents a reduction of one third, but which together result in a reduction of one third or more from an approach speed of 60 mph or greater, a warning indicator shall be provided for the speed reduction which takes the total reduction in speed to one third or more (see Figure C9). C4.1.4 Where the circumstances of paragraph C4.1.3 apply, the deceleration distance used to position the warning indicator shall be calculated using the permissible 14 RAILTRACK

In determining the speed to be used, no account shall be taken of any previous speed reduction within a distance of 3.2 km (2 miles) for which a warning indicator is not provided, or for which an additional warning indicator is provided (as permitted by section C4.7) but at which AWS equipment is not provided. < 3.2 km (2 miles) 125 P 125 DD Note: depending on spacing of speed reductions and relevant deceleration distances, warning indicator for second speed reduction could fall before speed indicator for first speed reduction see clause C4.1.5 Figure C9 C4.1.5 Application of the above criteria might result in a potentially confusing arrangement of signs, eg where the warning indicator for a reduction in speed would require to be positioned before the speed indicator for a previous reduction in speed (which does not meet the criteria of section C4.1.1 requiring the provision of a warning indicator). In such cases, consideration shall be given to the provision of a warning indicator (with AWS) for the first speed reduction, in accordance with the provisions of section 4.7 for additional warning indicators, where this will result in a clearer overall arrangement of signs. C4.1.6 Where further speed reductions occur beyond a reduction for which a warning indicator and associated AWS equipment is provided, these shall be assessed separately and a further warning indicator shall be provided if the above criteria are met (see Figure C10). < 3.2 km (2 miles) 125 P P DD DD 80 Figure C10 C4.2 Permissible Speed Warning Indicators: Differential Speeds C4.2.1 Warning indicators for standard differential speeds shall show the lower speed above the higher as for the speed indicator (see Figure C11). 18 Railway Group Standard Date December 00 Page 16 of 53 Uncontrolled When Printed Document to be withdrawn as of 04/06/11 published on 05/03/11 C4.2.2 Where non-standard differential speeds apply, a separate warning indicator for the higher (non-standard) speed shall be provided below the standard warning indicator, and shall incorporate an indication of the class or classes of train to which it applies, as for the corresponding speed indicators (see Figure C12). HST 60 HST 75 Figure C12 C4.3 Permissible Speed Warning Indicators: Calculation of Deceleration Distance C4.3.1 The calculation of the deceleration distance shall be based on the permissible speed on the approach to the warning indicator. C4.3.2 Calculation of deceleration distance shall, initially, use the permissible speed and gradient immediately before the change in permissible speed (see Figure C13). DD P Figure C13 C4.3.3 Where differential speeds are applied, separate calculations shall be carried out for each type of train and the positioning of the warning indicator shall allow for the greatest deceleration distance required. C4.3.4 Calculation of the deceleration distance shall take account of differential speeds on the approach to the speed reduction as well as any differential speeds applicable to the reduced speed. C4.3.5 Deceleration distances shall normally be determined from the tables in Appendix B of this document. The derivation of deceleration distances from other sources of information on the braking performance of trains is permitted in certain cases, as stated in section B4.5. C4.3.6 Where two speed indicators (eg for diverging routes) are located at the same position, the greater value of deceleration distance shall be used unless the lower speed is enforced by the signalling. C4.3.7 Where the initial calculation causes the warning indicator to be positioned in a section of line with a higher permissible speed, the calculation shall be repeated using that higher speed, adjusting the average gradient as necessary (see Figure C14). 16 RAILTRACK

DD Figure C15 DD Figure C16 C4.3.9 If the permissible speed on the preceding lower speed section is higher than the speed shown on the warning indicator, the calculation of deceleration distance shall be repeated using this lower speed, disregarding the higher permissible speed in the intervening section. If the re-calculation of deceleration distance places the warning indicator before the end of the lower speed section, it shall be positioned at the calculated distance. If the re-calculation would place the warning indicator after the end of the lower speed section, it shall be placed at the end of the lower speed section, as in the previous paragraph. C In such cases, however, the Infrastructure Controller shall consider adjustment of the permissible speeds, with the aim of achieving a more logical arrangement. For example, where a higher permissible speed is applied to a section of line between two lower speed sections (as in the examples shown in Figures C15 and C16) but this higher speed is not realistically attainable, reduction of the permissible speed on this section shall be considered to avoid the requirement for an extended deceleration distance. C Where the calculated position of the warning indicator would cause the indicator or its associated AWS equipment to conflict with the requirements of GK/RT0016 regarding conflict of signals, signs and AWS equipment, the position of the warning indicator shall be adjusted to a greater distance from the speed indicator than that required for deceleration to enable compliance with these requirements. C A warning indicator (whether or not associated AWS equipment is provided see C4.7) shall not be located between a signal or other sign applicable in the same direction of travel and the AWS equipment associated with that signal or sign. C4.4 Permissible Speed Warning Indicators: Provision of AWS C4.4.1 Each warning indicator which is provided to meet the requirements of section C4.1 shall be provided with an associated AWS permanent magnet, except: a) where the warning board is situated on a line which is not required to be fitted with AWS (see GK/RT0016). b) where the AWS associated with a signal displaying a cautionary aspect is able to provide an equivalent warning as permitted by section C C4.4.2 AWS suppression shall be applied for signalled running movements to which the warning equipment does not apply, except where a line consistently uses AWS cancelling indicators as permitted by GK/RT0016 (eg lines using Radio Electronic Token Block (RETB) or Simplified Bi-Directional Signalling (SIMBIDS)). C4.5 Permissible Speed Warning Indicators: Converging Junctions C4.5.1 Where there is more than one approach to a speed reduction, warning indicators shall be provided on each approach where the criteria of section C4.1.1 apply (see Figure C17). Each warning indicator shall be positioned approaching the convergence to avoid drivers receiving more than one warning for the same speed reduction. P DD P DD 125 Figure C17 C4.6 Permissible Speed Warning Indicators: Diverging Junctions C4.6.1 A warning indicator with a directional arrow shall be provided to indicate a speed on a diverging route over or beyond a junction or crossover ahead, where the junction signal is not approach controlled from red and the speed reduction meets the criteria of section C C4.6.2 Where a warning indicator with a directional indication is positioned at a signal which will display only a cautionary aspect for the diverging route to which the warning indicator applies, the caution indication given by the AWS equipment associated with the signal shall also apply to the warning indicator. Where practicable, the AWS shall be suppressed when the junction signal, and any intervening signals between the warning indicator and the junction signal, have been cleared for a route through the junction to which the warning indicator does not apply. C4.6.4 Where a reduction in permissible speed on the diverging route beyond a junction or crossover requires provision of a warning indicator in accordance with the criteria of section C4.1.1, and the calculated deceleration distance would require the warning indicator to be positioned in the vicinity of the junction or crossover where it is not practicable to locate it, or where it would not be clear which line it applies to, the warning indicator, with a directional arrow, shall be positioned adjacent to the speed indicator (with directional arrow) applying to the diverging route (see Figure C19) > DD Figure C19 C4.6.5 When the calculated deceleration distance would require the warning indicator to be placed on the approach to the diverging point, the permissible speed through the junction or crossover shall be reduced as necessary, either to allow the warning indicator to be positioned adjacent to the speed indicator applying to the diverging route, as shown in Figure C19, or to avoid the requirement to provide a separate warning indicator for the speed reduction beyond the junction or crossover. It is not permissible for a warning indicator applicable to a speed reduction beyond a junction or crossover to be positioned on the approach to the speed indicator at the diverging point, since a warning indicator with directional arrow in such a position would be interpreted as applying to a speed reduction over the divergence. C4.7 Permissible Speed Reductions: Provision of Additional Warning Indicators C4.7.1 It is permissible to provide additional warning indicators for speed reductions falling outside the criteria of section C4.1, where this will increase safety and not cause confusion to drivers. Criteria for provision of such additional warning indicators shall be determined by the Infrastructure Controller, and shall so far as is practicable be applied consistently on any section of route. C4.7.2 It is permissible, but not mandatory, to provide AWS equipment in association with such additional warning indicators, where this will increase safety and not cause confusion to drivers. The procedures shall be documented and responsibilities shall be clearly defined. D2.2 The procedures shall ensure that: a) the reason for imposition of a temporary speed restriction is recorded. b) the positions of speed indicators, warning boards and portable AWS equipment and any temporary alterations to signalling controls are determined by persons who are competent to undertake these activities; in addition to an understanding of the requirements of this document, these persons shall have either sufficient knowledge of the area where the speed restriction is to be imposed (or access to sufficient information about the area) to enable them to determine the suitability of proposed locations for signs and other equipment. c) details are published in the relevant WON(s) prior to implementation. d) any temporary signalling alterations required are fully documented and approved by the Infrastructure Controller, and the implementation of the alterations is co-ordinated with the introduction and withdrawal of the temporary speed restriction. e) equipment is provided and removed at the correct time, is correctly positioned, and is maintained in an effective state when in use. Requirements for train operators to ensure the provision of safety information to drivers are set out in GO/RT3521. D3 Temporary Speed Restrictions: General D3.1 Provision of Equipment D3.1.1 When a temporary speed restriction is applied, signs and associated equipment shall be provided on all running lines affected, as near as possible to the planned position, but subject to the restrictions on positioning set out in Part B of this document. D3.1.2 Where it is not possible for the equipment to be satisfactorily located at the calculated position, for example due to sighting problems or physical space limitations or where there is conflict with signals, AWS equipment or automatic level crossings, an alternative location that meets the requirements of this document shall be selected. D3.1.3 Implementation shall only occur after notification to drivers by publication in the WON. Where this is not possible, the speed restriction shall be implemented as an emergency speed restriction as described in section D10. Appendix A lists standard WON entries. RAILTRACK 21

24 Railway Group Standard Date December 00 Page 22 of 53 Uncontrolled When Printed Document to be withdrawn as of 04/06/11 published on 05/03/11 D3.2 Duration of Temporary Speed Restrictions D3.2.1 If a temporary speed restriction is required to be applied for longer than 6 months, it shall either be implemented as a change to the permissible speed or its continuation as a temporary speed restriction shall be justified by a risk assessment by the Infrastructure Controller. The risk assessment shall include consideration of the following factors: a) reason for imposition of temporary speed restriction (eg condition of track). b) speed of line and level of traffic. c) presence of level crossings and effect of speed restriction on warning times (see also section D9). d) introduction of excessive signal spacings (see GK/RT0034) in relation to reduced speed. e) any increase in risks arising from eventual removal of speed restriction which has been imposed for an extended period. D3.2.2 Where the reduction in speed for a temporary speed restriction is such as to require the provision of TPWS, GE/RT8030 permits exemption from the provision of TPWS for a temporary speed restriction which is in place for a period of 3 months or less. Where such a speed restriction is to continue in place for more than 3 months, the Infrastructure Controller shall carry out a risk assessment as described in section D3.2.1 before the end of the 3 month period, in order to determine whether it is acceptable for the restriction to continue as a temporary speed restriction (with TPWS provided) or whether it is necessary to convert it to a change in permissible speed. D4 Temporary Speed Restrictions: Speed Indicators D4.1 Temporary Speed Restrictions: Speed Indicators: General D4.1.1 The commencement of each temporary speed restriction shall be indicated by a speed indicator displaying the required speed(s) for all movements entering the restriction (see Figure D1). Additional speed indicators shall be provided where necessary at other locations within a temporary speed restriction where trains reverse or drivers are changed (eg station platforms). D4.1.2 Except in the case of abutting restrictions (as described in section D6), the end of a temporary speed restriction shall be indicated by a termination indicator displaying the letter T (see Figure D1). D4.2 Temporary Speed Restrictions: Speed Indicators: Differential Speeds D4.2.1 Standard differential speeds as described in the Rule Book, section U(i), are permitted to be applied for temporary speed restrictions. Indicators for standard differential speeds shall be provided with the lower speed indicator above the higher (see Figure D3). D4.4.2 Where differential speeds are applied, all the required speed indicators and directional indicators shall be positioned together. If there is insufficient space available to permit this, differential speeds shall not be applied. D4.4.3 Where a temporary speed restriction applies only over the trailing lead of a crossover but the speed indicator cannot be placed at a position within the crossover (see section B4.2.4), the speed indicator (with directional arrow) shall be placed before the facing lead (see Figure D5), and the WON shall specify: The speed indicator on line at miles chains applies only to trains using the crossover to line.
