8 What Can You Do? Secure your cargo. Carry tools for an emergency. If you find a problem, take the vehicle to a mechanic immediately. Never carry fuel in an enclosed vehicle! Inspect your vehicle before every trip. Keep a record of all problems and when they were fixed. Put proper signs and lights on your vehicle.

9 Vehicle Inspections Aircraft have regular inspections by expert mechanics and engineers. Pilots inspect their aircraft before every flight.

10 Vehicle Inspections But the vast majority of vehicle owners get into their vehicles without even checking to see if the lights work!!

11 How do you know if it s OK to drive? Chances are, more than one person drives a company vehicle. Ensure every driver and every passenger is safe Important to communicate problems with the vehicle to everyone. Best done by doing a pre-trip inspection checklist of log-book for each vehicle. Your Pre-trip inspection should include: Checking tyres, fluid levels and brakes Making sure all lights and indicators work Removing foreign material from grill and tyre wells Discussion Point: What else should you inspect?

14 Some Other Considerations! Roll-over Protection These are supports constructed into the passenger cage of a vehicle that prevent the roof from collapsing on the occupants if the vehicle rolls upsidedown during a crash. Roll-bars prevented the passengers from being crushed when this vehicle overturned during a crash. Cargo Restraints Cargo can be deadly during a crash. It should be stored outside of the passenger compartment, or held in place with nets or straps if inside the vehicle. Driving with lights It doesn t have to be dark to turn your headlights on! Having your lights on during the day makes your vehicle much more visible, particularly in heavy traffic or in areas where the land is one solid colour (like the desert or outback). Next time you re out driving, look for cars that have their lights on and see how easy they are to spot!

19 What should YOU do? You cannot escape a damaged/sinking/burning vehicle if you are unconscious. Anything you need to do while driving can be done with a seatbelt on. EVERY passenger must have a seatbelt. If there aren t enough seatbelts for everyone, TAKE ANOTHER VEHICLE. Make sure all the seatbelts are in good working order before you depart. If they are broken, report it then get them fixed!

20 An Exercise You are about to view a video of several people playing basketball. There are two teams: WHITE (white shirts) BLACK (black shirts) YOUR TASK You must count the number of passes each team makes (a pass is throwing the ball to another player). 23 Basketball Exercise When we are asked to concentrate on one thing, we tend to develop tunnel vision, meaning we see only what we want to see. Because the scene with the basketball players is very complex, our brains block out the information we don t need to complete our task. Driving is a complex task steering, accelerating, breaking, and watching traffic. It requires a lot of concentration. When you talk on the phone, or read a text message, reach for an object, or even eat a sandwich, you are taking your concentration away from the road. Make sure you pay attention to the road when you are driving you don t want to miss any gorilla s!

24 Distractions You are 4 times more likely to have a crash when you are talking on your cell phone, eating a sandwich, or looking at objects outside your window. When you reach for a moving object, like a bottle of water rolling on the floor, or try to put something into your pocket, you are 9 times more likely to have a crash. 27 Distratcions BE THE BOSS Be in control of your passengers and be in control of your vehicle: Make sure everyone wears a seatbelt Ask your passengers to settle down and be quiet! TIE IT DOWN Secure lose articles in the car so they don t roll around and distract you. SIGHTSEEING IS FOR VACATIONS Definitely enjoy the view, but don t forget your main purpose to stay on the road! TURN DOWN THE DISTRACTION Can t hear? Turn the radio down! NO MOBILE PHONES Don t talk on the phone while you are driving. If you need to make a call, pull over and stop. Let your voic answer it. If it s that important, they ll call back. Pulling over and stopping to talk on the phone may make you 5 minutes late but could save your life!

29 The fastest way to an accident You may be able to handle your vehicle, and your vehicle may be able to handle the road. But when we are driving, particularly when we are driving fast, things happen quickly. It takes at least 2 seconds for your body to react to a hazard in the road. The speed limit lets you know how fast you can travel and still see clearly for 2 seconds ahead of you. Go any faster, and you will come up on a hazard so fast, your brain won t have time to register it

30 you could crash into someone The fastest way to an accident you could crash into someone you could swerve and lose control... it will happen so fast, you won t even know what hit you.

32 What can YOU do? PLAN AHEAD Find out how long it will take you to drive to your destination, and plan to take all of that time. Plan to take even longer just in case! SLOW DOWN Arriving alive is more important than arriving fast! MAKE THE CALL If you end up running late, call ahead and let people know. It s up to you to think safe if you make the call to slow down and stay safe, your boss will support you DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS Just because a sign says you can go fast doesn t mean you should. Use your judgement!!

33 Fatigue Facts Fatigue accumulates over time. This results in sleep debt which, in the short term, has to be paid back with an hour s sleep for every hour missed. People are not typically good judges of their own fatigue and impairment. You do not learn to cope with lack of sleep. What happens is that you get used to the problems associated with fatigue and come to believe that your lower performance is normal. Very fatigued individuals are at risk of micro sleeps where they fall asleep for a number of seconds. When driving tired, it is very hard to predict or prevent these events. Slide 33

34 Comparing Fatigue and Alcohol The impact of sleep loss on performance (coordination, reaction time, etc.) has been compared to the effects of alcohol by researchers from the Centre for Sleep Research at the University of South Australia. They found the following: After hours awake, performance decreases to a level similar to a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05% After 20 plus hours awake, performance declined to a level equivalent to 0.08% blood alcohol concentration Slide 34

38 What can YOU do? Air travel and jet lag take it out of you. Don t jump in a car and drive to the office when you arrive. Call ahead and let them know you ll be late Wait until tomorrow Get a good night s sleep Pull over and take a nap Let someone else drive

39 Traffic Management Plans Provide clear and concise operating rules for driving and operating vehicles and equipment to prevent collisions and other health & safety risks Each site should have a traffic management plan, this is a visual layout of the site that shows structures, roads, site storage, compound, pedestrian routes etc.

41 Considerations for Site Rules Introduce segregated pedestrian walkways Introduce speed limits Reduce the need for reversing vehicles, such as introduce a ONE WAY system Use a flagman to control deliveries and reversing vehicles Designated loading/unloading areas Only park in designated parking areas Don t block pedestrian routes Don t block traffic routes

42 Considerations for Pedestrian Keep safe by following these basic rules Keep to designated footpaths Wear your Hi-Viz clothing In the near vicinity of heavy mobile equipment, always get the operator s attention before walking by any machines or plant

43 Considerations for Site Deliveries With the amount of materials that are usually delivered to site, you need to be aware of the potential dangers that exist The telehandler reversing and moving short/long distances with loads Mobile cranes swinging loads off flatbed lorries and into position Excavations at roadside/traffic route
