5 1. INTRODUCTION Congratulations on your choice of a Jaylor mixer to complement your operation. This equipment has been designed and manufactured to meet the needs of the astute buyer for efficient cutting, mixing and feeding. Safe, efficient and trouble-free operation of your mixer requires that you and anyone else who will be operating or maintaining the machine, read and understand the safety, operating, maintenance and troubleshooting information contained within this manual. This manual covers the A50 series models manufactured by Jaylor. Keep this manual readily available for reference and be sure to pass it on to new operators or owners. Contact your nearest Jaylor dealer or distributor if you need assistance or information. OPERATOR ORIENTATION - The directions left, right, front, and rear, as mentioned throughout this manual, are as seen from the operator s point of view with mixing drum behind the operator. Shown in Figure 1 below, the arrows point to the front direction for each model. Therefore, machine users should familiarize themselves only with information relevant to their A50 model and disregard the rest. Please note which one of these models you will be operating (self propelled model, stationary model, trailer model, or truck mounted model). 2. POLICY STATEMENT It is the policy of Jaylor to improve its products where it is possible and practical to do so. Jaylor reserves the right to make changes or improvements in design and construction at any time, without incurring the obligation to make these changes on previously manufactured units. 3. OWNER/OPERATOR S RESPONSIBILITY It is the Owner/Operator s responsibility to read the Operating and Maintenance Manual, to operate, lubricate, maintain, and store the product in accordance with all instructions and safety procedures. Failure of the Owner/Operator to read the Operating and Maintenance Manual is a misuse of this equipment. Like all mechanical products, Jaylor products will require cleaning and upkeep. It is the Owner/Operator s responsibility to inspect the product and to have any part(s) and/or assemblies Jaylor Operating and Maintenance Manual A50 Series Models

6 repaired or replaced when continued operation would cause damage or excessive wear to other components or cause a safety hazard. It is the Owner/Operator s responsibility to deliver the product to the authorized Jaylor Dealer or Distributor, from whom it was purchased, for service or replacement of defective parts which are covered by warranty. Repairs to be submitted for warranty consideration must be made within thirty (30) days of failure. It is the Owner/Operator s responsibility to cover any cost incurred by the Dealer for traveling to the site or hauling the product for the purpose of performing a warranty obligation or inspection. 4. LIMITED WARRANTY JAYLOR (the Seller) warrants the articles and units sold to be free from defects in material and workmanship and to conform to applicable specifications. These express warranties are the sole warranties of the Seller, and any other warranties, express, implied in law or implied in fact, are hereby specifically excluded. Refer to the Operating and Maintenance Manual content for any applicable warranties expressed otherwise. The Seller s sole obligation under its warranties will be, at its option, to repair or replace any article or part thereof which is proved to be other than warranted. Obligation under this warranty will be limited to replacement or repair of parts found, upon Seller s inspection, to be defective. All warranties shall expire 12 (twelve) months from the date the unit or article is placed in service, or 12 (twelve) months from the date the article or unit is delivered by the Seller, whichever expires first. NO ALLOWANCES WILL BE MADE TO THE BUYER FOR ANY TRANSPORTATION, LABOUR CHARGES, PARTS ADJUSTMENTS OR REPAIRS, OR ANY OTHER WORK, UNLESS THESE CHARGES ARE AUTHORIZED IN ADVANCE BY THE SELLER. The Seller shall in no event be liable for special or consequential damages. If an article is claimed to be defective in material or workmanship, or does not conform to specifications, the Seller, upon notice promptly given, will either examine the article or unit at its site, or issue shipping instructions to return to the Seller. The warranties shall not extend to any articles, units, or parts thereof which have been installed, used, or serviced, otherwise than in conformance with the Seller s applicable instructions, manuals, service bulletins, or, if none, which shall have been articles, units, parts thereof furnished by the Buyer or acquired from others at the Buyer s request and/or Buyer s specifications. The warranties are not applicable for expenses, either direct or consequential, that may arise from the use or inability to use the articles and units sold by the Seller. The Seller shall in no event be responsible for and will not be held liable for losses, injury, or damage caused to persons or property by reason of operation of Seller s products or their failure. No warranty is extended to regular wear items such as fluid, paint, tires, knives and the like. The engine and scale system are covered by separate warranties by their respective manufacturers which can be found in this manual. This warranty pertains to components manufactured or installed by Jaylor only. This hereby excludes any warranties offered separately such as those offered by the truck manufacturer. In this event, please refer to the appropriate Warranty Statements offered by the separate manufacturer. All claims for warranty must be directed to your dealer or distributor. SERIAL NUMBER LOCATION Always give your dealer/distributor the model number and serial number of your Jaylor mixer when ordering parts or requesting service or other information. Depending on the type of service, the serial numbers of individual components and/or assemblies will be required. The serial number location required for servicing your Jaylor product is shown in Figure 2 (on the side of the hydraulic oil reservoir). For easy reference, please write this information in section 7. Customer Reference Information. 9 8. SAFETY All implements with moving parts are potentially hazardous. There is no substitute for a cautious, safe-minded operator who recognizes the potential hazards and follows reasonable safety practices. The manufacturer has designed the implement to be used with all its safety equipment properly attached to minimize the chance of accidents. BEFORE YOU START! Read the safety messages on the implement and shown in your manual. Observe the rules of safety and common sense! 8.1 Safety Alert Symbol This Safety Alert Symbol means: - ATTENTION! - BECOME ALERT! - YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! The Safety Alert Symbol identifies important safety messages on your Jaylor mixer and in this manual. When you see this symbol, be alert to the possibility of personal injury or death. Follow the instructions in the safety message. 8.2 Understand Signal Words Note the use of the signal words DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION with the safety messages. The appropriate signal word for each message has been selected using the following guidelines: DANGER Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. This signal word is to be limited to the most extreme situations typically for machine components which, for functional purposes, cannot be guarded. WARNING Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury, and includes hazards that are exposed when guards are removed. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. CAUTION Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. If you have any questions not answered in this manual or require additional copies or the manual is damaged, please contact your dealer or manufacturer directly. 8.3 Safety Guidelines YOU are responsible for the SAFE operation and maintenance of your Jaylor mixer. YOU must ensure that YOU and ANYONE else who is going to operate, maintain, or work around the Jaylor mixer be familiar with the operating and maintenance procedures and related SAFETY information contained in this manual. This manual will take you step-by-step through your working day and alerts you to safety practices that should be adhered to while operating the machine. 10 Remember, YOU are the key to SAFETY. Good safety practices not only protect you but also the people around you. Make these practices a working part of your safety program. Be certain that EVERYONE operating this equipment is familiar with the recommended operating and maintenance procedures and follows all the safety precautions. All accidents can be avoided. Do not risk injury or death by ignoring good safety practices. Vertical mixer owners MUST give operating instructions to operators or employees before allowing them to operate the machine, and at least annually thereafter. The most important safety device on this equipment is a SAFE OPERATOR. It is the operator s responsibility to read and understand ALL safety and operating instructions in this manual and to FOLLOW THEM. Jaylor feels that a person who has not read and understood all operating and safety instructions is not qualified to operate the machine. An untrained operator exposes himself and bystanders to possible serious injury or death. Do not modify the equipment in any way. Unauthorized modification may impair the function, safety, and life of the equipment as well as possibly voiding the warranty. Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY! 8.4 General Safety Read and understand this manual and all safety signs before operating, servicing, maintaining or adjusting the vertical mixer. When parking the mixer, place on a flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. Only trained competent persons shall operate the vertical mixer. An untrained operator is not qualified to operate the machine. Do not allow riders on the vertical mixer. Wear protective gear such as hearing protection, footwear with slip resistant soles, and the like. Do not operate this machinery under the influence of any alcohol, drugs or medication. Review safety related items annually with all personnel who will be operating or maintaining the vertical mixer. 8.5 Operating Safety Read and understand this manual and all safety signs before using. When parking the mixer, place on a flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. When loading, park mixer on a flat, level surface, place controls in neutral, and apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels). Keep body parts away from unloading door when open. 11 Do not operate when any guards are damaged or removed. Keep hands, feet, clothing and hair away from all moving and/or rotating parts. Do not allow riders on the machine. Clear the area of bystanders, especially children, when operating. Make sure you are in compliance with all local regulations regarding transporting equipment on public roads and highways. Before starting, make sure hydraulic system is not leaking, hydraulic hoses and wiring are in good condition, and that the platform and engine area are free of debris. Make sure there is plenty of ventilation. The exhaust fumes from the internal combustion engine may cause asphyxiation. Hitch weight of A50 Trailer is approximately 100 lbs (45 kg) plus 10% of payload. Therefore, use only a towing vehicle with adequate hitch and brakes to stop the vehicle coupled with the machine and payload. Review safety instructions with all personnel annually. 8.6 Driving and Hauling Safety Be especially observant of the operating area and terrain watch for holes, rocks, overhead obstructions and other hidden hazards. Always inspect the area prior to operation. - Do not operate near the edge of drop-offs or banks. - Do not operate on steep slopes as overturn may result. Do not allow riders on the machine. Do not protrude feet outside the platform while traveling. Do not operate at unsafe speeds. Make sure you are in compliance with all local regulations regarding transporting equipment on public roads (i.e. lights, slow moving vehicle sign, tie-downs, safety chains, etc.). Use only an adequate towing vehicle. 8.7 Maintenance and Repair Safety Read and understand this manual and all safety signs before operating, servicing, maintaining or adjusting the vertical mixer. When parking the mixer, place on a flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. Be sure to let engine and hydraulic system cool to a safe temperature before servicing, adjusting or repairing any of these components. Disconnect the spark plug lead and ground it to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly. Only properly trained personnel should maintain and repair this equipment. 12 Make sure all guards are in place and properly secured when maintenance work is completed. Before starting, make sure hydraulic system is not leaking and that hydraulic hoses and wiring are in good condition and will not abrade on edges. Keep hands, feet, hair, and clothing away from all moving and/or rotating parts. Clear the area of bystanders, especially children, when carrying out any maintenance and repairs or making any adjustments. Do not allow grease or oil to build up on the machine. Always use glove and eye protection when handling the battery. 8.8 Hydraulic Safety Make sure that all components in the hydraulic system are kept in good condition and are clean. Replace any worn, cut, abraded or flattened hoses or metal lines immediately. Do not attempt any makeshift repairs to the hydraulic fittings or hoses. The hydraulic system operates under extremely high pressure. Such repairs will fail suddenly and create a hazardous and unsafe condition. Wear proper hand and eye protection when searching for a high-pressure hydraulic leak. Use a piece of wood or cardboard as a backstop instead of hands to isolate and identify a leak. If injured by a concentrated high-pressure stream of hydraulic fluid, seek medical attention immediately. Serious infection or toxic reaction can develop from hydraulic fluid piercing the skin surface. Before applying pressure to the system, make sure all components are tight and that lines, hoses, and couplings are not damaged. 8.9 Electrical Safety Before performing any electrical maintenance or service on the internal combustion engine, consult the engine manufacturer s manual and understand and follow all safety practices given. Always wear eye protection, gloves and remove all metallic jewelry before performing maintenance, service or adjustments of the electrical system. Always remove the negative battery cable lead before performing any maintenance, service or adjustments of the electrical system Tire Safety Failure to follow proper procedures when mounting a tire on a wheel or rim can produce an explosion, which may result in serious injury or death. Overloading the tires may result in serious injury or death. Have a qualified tire dealer or repair service perform required tire maintenance Storage Safety Store unit in an area away from human activity. A50 SAFETY SIGN-OFF FORM Anyone who will be operating and/or maintaining the machine must first read and clearly understand ALL safety, operating, and maintenance information presented in this manual. Annually review this information with personnel. An untrained operator is unqualified to operate this machine. A sign-off sheet is provided for your record keeping to show that all personnel who will be working with the equipment have read and understand the information in this manual and have been instructed in the operation of the equipment. 15 10. SAFETY SIGN LOCATIONS The types of safety signs and typical locations on the equipment are shown in the illustrations that follow. Good safety requires that you familiarize yourself with the various safety signs, the type of warning and the area of particular function related to that area which requires your SAFETY AWARENESS. New signs are available from your authorized dealer or distributor How to Install Safety Signs Be sure that the installation area is clean, dry and is above 10 C (50 F). Remove the smallest portion of the split backing paper. Align the sign over the specified area and press the small sticky portion in place. 19 11. OPERATION The Jaylor mixer is specifically designed to cut and mix feed ingredients into a total mixed ration (TMR). Many of the features incorporated into this machine are the result of suggestions made by customers like you. Located at the back of this manual is a suggestion/comments sheet that can be faxed, mailed, or ed to Jaylor. We greatly appreciate any input you may have, and would like to thank you in advance for any you may give. Read this manual carefully to learn how to operate the machine safely and how to adjust it to provide maximum efficiency. Following the operating instructions with a proper maintenance program will extend the life of your machinery. 12. MACHINE COMPONENTS The main machine components for all four A50 models are shown on the following pages. 20 Figure 9 - A50 Self Propelled Mixer Components 1. Mixer Drum Used to contain the feed while it is cut and mixed by the vertical auger. 2. Vertical Auger Used to mix the feed within the mixer drum and to discharge the feed through the unloading door. 3. Auger Knives Used to cut the feed material as the auger rotates. 4. Speed/Direction Control Pedal Depressing either side of the pedal will cause the mixer to move forward or reverse. The further down the pedal is depressed, the faster the mixer will travel. 5. Reverse Arrow Cutout Indicates which side of the control pedal to press to travel in reverse. 6. Forward Arrow Cutout Indicates which side of the control pedal to press to travel forwards. 7. Operator Platform The operator should always be standing on the platform while operating the mixer. 8. Battery Provides power to the electric engine starter, electronic scale system, and auxiliary components (if applicable). 9. Auger On/Off Control When T-handle is pulled outward, auger will begin rotating. When T-handle is pushed inward, auger will stop rotating. When the T-handle is rotated in either direction, it will lock in position. Some units are controlled by an electronic rocker switch with on and off positions installed at the same location. 10. Parking Brake Equipped on some units. 11. Hydraulic Oil Reservoir/Cap Remove this cap to add oil. Dipstick indicates proper oil level range. 12. Remote Engine Throttle Control To increase engine speed, push throttle lever upward. To decrease engine speed, push throttle lever downward. 13. Steering Handle Rotate the steering handle clockwise or counterclockwise to steer the mixer. 14. Electronic Scale Indicator Displays the weight inside the drum. 15. Unloading Door Door can be opened to allow feed to be discharged. 16. Door Open/Close Control Used to control feed discharge rate. 17. Engine Fuel Tank/Cap Remove this cap to add fuel. 18. PRE-OPERATION CHECKLIST Efficient and safe operation of the Jaylor mixer requires that each operator reads and understands all the operating procedures and all related safety precautions outlined in this section. A pre-operation checklist is provided for the operator. It is important for both the personal safety and maintaining the good mechanical condition of the machine that this checklist is followed. Before operating the machine the following areas should be checked: 1. Lubricate the machine as outlined in section 29. Lubricating. 2. Check fluid levels: hydraulic oil reservoir, engine oil, fuel. 3. Check for oil leaks. 4. Check tire pressure. 5. Check that wheel nuts are tight. 6. Check that there is no material entangled on the auger (twine and the like). 7. Check that all guards and safety devices are in place. 8. Check that the machine is clean and free of debris. 9. Check that the steering chain is tight (A50 self propelled models). If chain is loose, see section 34. Steering Chain Maintenance. 10. Check that the trailer coupler connects securely to the towing vehicle ball (A50 trailer models). If the connection is either too tight or too loose, see section 35. Trailer Coupler Maintenance. BREAKING-IN Although there are no operational restrictions for the machine when used for the first time, it is recommended that the following items be checked prior to first use: 14.1 Before Starting: Follow break-in procedures outlined by the engine manufacturer (self propelled, trailer, and truck mounted models). Check for debris inside the drum. Open and close discharge door and make sure it moves easily. Check to see if door position lock engages at different door height positions. Check to see that steering works properly (self propelled model). Depress and release both sides of speed/direction control pedal and make sure the pedal returns to neutral. Check auger on/off control to be sure that it moves without too much resistance (be sure handle is not in lock position). Check hydraulic oil level, engine oil level and fuel level. Refill if necessary. Check that no hoses are pinched, rubbing, or being crimped. Re-align as required After operating for ½ hour: Park the mixer on flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. Be sure to let engine and hydraulic system cool to a safe temperature before servicing, adjusting or repairing any of these components. Disconnect the spark plug lead and ground it to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly. Check the auger. Remove all string, twine, or other entangled material. Check for oil leaks. Stop leaks before continuing. Lubricate all grease fittings After operating for 5 hours and 10 hours: Park the mixer on flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. Be sure to let engine and hydraulic system cool to a safe temperature before servicing, adjusting or repairing any of these components. Disconnect the spark plug lead and ground it to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly. Check all wheel nuts, fasteners, and hardware. Check the auger. Remove all string, twine, or other entangled material. Proceed with normal servicing and maintenance schedule as defined in the maintenance section. 26 15. CONTROLS 15.1 Weighing The scale system on standard models includes four weigh-bars. The weigh-bars electronically measure the amount of ration inside of the mixing chamber. When attaching the indicator to the machine, be sure that it is securely fastened. On the A50, the scale indicator is located on the upper mixer drum (near operator). The mounting bracket arm assembly allows the scale indicator to be turned to face every direction. Be sure not to pinch the wire. NOTE - Tighten swivel joint lock nut to the point where there is enough friction to hold the indicator in position but it can still easily be turned by hand. Scale indicator NOTE - The scale will be programmed to display weight in either kilograms (kg) or pounds (lbs). This is set by the manufacturer and must be ordered to suit. 27 15.2 Side Door Discharge On A50 self propelled, trailer and stationary models the side discharge door is controlled manually from the operator s platform. On the A50 truck mounted model, the door is powered by a cylinder and controlled remotely by a switch. On the A50 self propelled, trailer and stationary models, the door can be raised to three possible positions. The most suitable door opening height should be determined by taking into consideration the feed composition and the ground speed of the machine when unloading Speed/Direction Control Pedal (A50 Self Propelled Models) The A50 self propelled model has the ability to be driven by the operator. Speed and direction (forward/reverse) are controlled by a foot pedal on the operator s platform. Forward and reverse are indicated on the platform. The further the pedal is depressed either way, the faster the mixer will travel. When the pedal is released, the mixer will stop traveling. Machine Components for control locations). Auger rotational speed can be controlled by altering the engine speed. 28 15.5 Steering (A50 Self Propelled Models) The A50 self propelled model incorporates a reliable mechanical steering system. Rotation of the steering handle controls the direction of the machine. The machine is capable of turning almost 90 degrees in either direction (see Figure 15 below). NOTE DO NOT attempt to rotate the steering wheel while the mixer is not moving. This applies a tremendous amount of stress on all of the steering and wheel components and could reduce the lifespan of the system. Figure 15 - A50 Self Propelled Steering 1. Steering Handle 2. Steering Tire The hydraulically powered steering tire can be turned nearly 90 degrees either way which allows the mixer to turn almost on the spot if necessary. NOTE Some mixer components in this figure have been removed for clarity Throttle Control All A50 models which are powered by an internal combustion engine will have engine speed control. The A50 trailer and truck mounted throttles will be controlled directly by the engine throttle control lever. Locations are indicated in section 12. Machine Components. 29 16. DRIVING The A50 self propelled model is designed to be easily and conveniently maneuvered down narrow alleyways with sharp turns. The following outlines the procedure and possible hazards to be aware of while driving the machine. Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY! 1. Be sure all bystanders are clear of the machine and that there are no riders on the machine. 2. Be sure that the machine has plenty of fuel to reach its destination. 3. Start the machine as outlined in section 19. General Field Operation. 4. Stand securely on the operator s platform facing forward. Use one hand to securely hold the steering handle. 5. Check to make sure the steering tire is facing forward before driving. 6. Be well aware of your surroundings before driving. Do not drive if you feel the terrain or the situation deems it unsafe to do so. 7. When you are ready to proceed, make note of the cutout arrows on the platform as they will inform you which side of the speed/direction control pedal to press depending on which direction you want to travel. 8. Gradually depress the pedal downward until a comfortable and safe speed is reached. 9. Rotate the steering handle as needed to maneuver across the terrain. 10. Make sure you are always aware not only of the area in front of the mixer, but also behind and on both sides of the mixer. 11. Plan the route to your destination and make sure you are familiar with it. Always take the safest, most direct route. Avoid driving if visibility is poor. 12. When parking the mixer, place on a flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. The following is a list of feasibly dangerous situations that the operator may be faced with at some point. Please follow the recommendations given to reduce the risk of accidents and injury or death: If you are planning on driving the machine on a local highway, be sure to follow all local highway and transport laws and regulations. This may include, but is not necessarily limited to, making sure the SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) emblem and all the lights and reflectors that are required by the local highway and transport authorities are in place, are clean, and can be seen by all overtaking and oncoming traffic. This machine has three wheeled drive and is designed to handle most farmyard conditions, including driving up or down steep inclines. Please ensure that when driving up or down inclines, the machine faces straight up or down, and not across the incline (as turnover could occur). Be especially careful when traveling up and down inclines with a full load. When traveling up an incline with a full load, it is recommended that the operator disengage the auger to avoid the possibility of engine stalling and loss of control. Likewise, never park the machine on a hill or slope. Only park on flat, level surfaces with blocks applied (or parking brake engaged if equipped). Before driving into an area with low headroom, make sure that you the operator, and the machine fit comfortably. Do not enter if it is not comfortable. When entering into a new area blindly (i.e. from daylight into a dark barn or around a blind corner), decrease to a very slow speed and be prepared to stop suddenly if necessary. 30 Warning: Warning: Warning: Do not allow an incompetent person or a person under the age of 16 to operate this machine as they could be injured or killed. The forward and reverse pedals are very reactive. Depressing, releasing or changing direction rapidly may cause loss of control and damage of the machine, and/or injury or death of the operator and/or bystanders. Do not spin tires, especially when driving up and down hills, as control of the machine maybe lost, and/or the operator and/or bystanders could be injured or killed. Warning: A loaded machine (machine and payload) may weigh as much as 2,500 lbs (1134 kg). An operator must use his own discretion when negotiating rough and uneven terrain. Improper operation of the loaded machine can cause loss of control, severe injury, or death. 17. TRANSPORTING The A50 TRAILER MODEL is designed to be easily and conveniently moved from one location to another. The following outlines the procedure for securing and transporting this model. Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY! 1. Always comply with the rules and regulations governing the transporting of agricultural equipment on highways before starting. 2. Make sure all bystanders are clear of the machine and that there are no riders on the machine. 3. Be sure that the towing vehicle is rated to haul the trailer at full load. Remember, the loaded trailer can weigh as much as 2500 lbs (1134 kg). 4. Make sure that the unit is hitched properly to the towing vehicle. This mixer uses a standard 2 inch ball coupler to secure the trailer to the towing vehicle. To couple, move the lever to the opened/unsecured position as shown in Figure 16 below. With the mixer drum empty, drop the trailer coupler over the towing vehicle ball making sure that the coupler slides completely down over the ball. Next, move the lever to the closed/secured position as shown in Figure 16 below. Insert a pin or pad lock completely through the lever in the location shown in Figure 16. If using a pad lock, make sure it is locked and secure. If using a pin, be sure that it is of the type that cannot slip out during transportation (i.e. cotter pin). Check that the trailer coupler and towing vehicle ball are secured by pulling up on the coupler. If it is possible to pull the trailer coupler up, off the towing vehicle ball (with mixer drum empty), then the coupler and ball are not secured. If this is the case, please repeat the steps, making sure that the towing vehicle ball and the trailer coupler are secured. If the connection is either too tight or too loose, see the Trailer Coupler Maintenance section in this manual. NOTE - Some jurisdictions may require a safety chain for this size of machine (not included). Please follow all local highway and transport laws and regulations. Warning: Always be sure that the trailer coupler and towing vehicle ball are of the same size and specification. Lower the trailer jack and secure it in the horizontal position so that it cannot come into contact with the ground during transportation. 6. Make sure the SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) emblem and all the lights and reflectors that are required by the local highway and transport authorities are in place, are clean, and can be seen by all overtaking and oncoming traffic. 7. Once in motion, it is not recommended that the machine be transported faster than 15 km/hr (10 mph) with lug tread tires (see Figure 17). Do not transport the machine faster than 30 km/hr (20 mph) with highway tread tire (see Figure 17). Never transport faster than the road or terrain conditions will allow you to do safely. 8. 32 The A50 TRUCK MOUNTED MODEL is designed to be mounted easily on a flatbed truck for transportation. Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY! 1. Be sure all bystanders are clear of the machine and that there are no riders on the machine. 2. Lift the mixer onto the truck s flat bed using a forklift with sufficient capacity for the job. Open the forks so that they are just inside the wood skids to maintain stability when lifting. Be sure to run the forks under the mixer frame from the door side (see Figure 18). The mixer should be placed near the driver side edge of the flatbed to insure that the feed will discharge onto the ground beside the truck. NOTE - The loaded mixer can weigh up to 2500 lbs (1134 kg). Be sure that the truck has sufficient capacity to carry this load on the bed safely with the load off center. 3. Secure the tie-down brackets (see Figure 18) to the truck frame or bed using a tie-down chain or strap with sufficient capacity for the job. 4. Be sure that the control pendant and cable is secured. 5. Never transport faster than the road or terrain conditions will allow you to do safely. 33 18. CUTTING AND MIXING The operation of the Jaylor mixer will differ greatly with the various feeds and climatic conditions. In most instances, trial and error is the best method of setting the machine up for a particular commodity to obtain maximum performance. However, as a general rule the lightest commodities should be added first followed by the next lightest commodity and so on. When loading, have the auger turning and try to distribute the commodities evenly within the mixing drum. Once the hays/straws are partially cut and broken apart, other commodities can be added. Remember, additional cutting will take place during mixing, so be careful not to over cut. In some case, where the hays/straws are very long, it has been found beneficial to first add some heavier commodities to eliminate the possibility of the hays/straws wrapping around the auger. Also, when adding hays and straws be careful to only add bales or partial bales that are small enough to fit between the auger periphery and the drum wall. Failure to do so can cause plugging or decreased cutting ability. The type of mix required varies from one operation to another. Therefore, mixing times and procedures will vary as well. Typically, a total mixed ration is achieved in 3 to 5 minutes beginning after the last ingredient is added. When adding ingredients, watch the numbers on the scale indicator to monitor the weight of each ingredient as it is added. We highly recommend the use of a feed nutritionist when planning the rations as well as the regular use of a particle separator to ensure accuracy of mix. For your convenience, a Jaylor Particle Separator, based on the Penn State Particle Separator, is available from Jaylor. Upon completion, the ideal mix will be light, fluffy and uniform. Hays/straws will be cut cleanly at short lengths and no clumping of feed will be visible. Never stand on the mixer platform while the drum is being loaded. Stay out of reach of the loading equipment. Never park or load the mixer in a location where you or any person could fall into the mixing chamber as severe injury or death could result. While loading the machine, be certain that no bucket or loading device comes into contact with the rotating auger inside the mixing chamber. This may cause injury or death to the operator and serious damage to the mixer and/or loader. Never load an unhitched machine (A50 trailer model). 34 Caution: Caution: It is recommended that commodities are added to the mixing chamber while the auger is turning for maximum mix efficiency. Starting the augers from a standstill with a full load in the mixing chamber places additional stress on the machine and may decrease mix quality. Never load anything into the mixing chamber that could cause damage to the machine (i.e. lumber, stones, tires, etc.). The following are some problems that the operator may be faced with at some point during cutting and mixing. Please follow the recommendations given to remedy the problem. Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY! 1. Unplugging: Although plugging or clogging of material can occur in several ways, the main way that plugging or clogging usually occurs is at the unloading door. Always park the mixer on a flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, wait for all moving parts to stop, (disconnect the spark plug lead and ground it to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly) before unplugging. Open discharge door and clean out the clogged area. 2. Entangled Material: Twine, string, and wrapping material that is not removed from bales can get tangled in the auger or under the auger. If this material is not removed from the auger, it can cause damage to mixer components as well as decreased mixing and cutting ability. Always park the mixer on a flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, wait for all moving parts to stop, disconnect the spark plug lead and ground it (to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly) before removing entangled material. 35 19. GENERAL FIELD OPERATION The following is a procedure for the general field operation of the A50 mixer. Remember to follow and understand all safety guidelines previously described when operating the machine. Disregard any information that is not applicable to your A50 model. 1. Understand and follow the Pre-Operation checklist, as described in section 13. Pre- Operation Checklist. 2. Understand and memorize the location and function of all controls, as described in section 15. Controls. 3. Understand and follow all safety guidelines described in this manual. 4. Clear area of all bystanders (especially children) and make sure there are no riders on the machine. 5. Start the engine at low idle, using choke if necessary. Increase engine speed to desired level (for electric stationary model start electric motor). Be sure that all controls are in neutral and that wheels are blocked (or parking brake is engaged if equipped). 6. Remove wheel blocks or disengage parking brake if equipped. 7. Transport the machine to the feed loading area following guidelines as described in sections 16. Driving and 17. Transporting. 8. Turn auger on as outlined in section 15. Controls. 9. Proceed with loading and mixing of the ration as outlined in section 18. Cutting and Mixing. Danger: Danger: Never stand on the mixer platform while the drum is being loaded. Stay out of reach of the loading equipment. Never enter the mixing chamber unless the mixer is parked on a flat, level surface, all controls are in neutral, parking brake is applied if equipped (if not, block wheels), engine is stopped, ignition key is removed, all moving parts have stopped, and the spark plug lead has been disconnected and grounded (to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly). 36 10. Transport the machine to the feeding area. NOTE - It is not recommended that the unit be transported for long distances when the mixing chamber is fully loaded. Transporting will compact the mixture and can make startup difficult. 11. Use a combination of the opening of the unloading door and ground speed to distribute the feed mixture to the desired areas. Follow this order: - Raise the unloading door; - If not already done, start auger rotation; - Begin driving along feeding area to unload the feed. 12. Monitor scale indicator readings to evaluate ration distribution to unloading areas. 13. Continue unloading until mixing chamber is empty or desired amount of mixed ration has been unloaded. Important: It may be necessary, in order to completely empty the mixer of all commodities, to turn the auger on and off rapidly. This will dislodge the feed that is resting on the auger flighting, and allow the auger to unload the feed. 14. Stopping: a. Stop forward motion. b. Close unloading door. c. Slow engine to low idle. d. Turn auger off as outlined in section 15. Controls. e. Stop engine if required. 15. 37 20. STORAGE Should the machine be stored for an extended period of time, the machine should be thoroughly inspected and prepared for storage. Repair or replace any worn or damaged components to prevent any unnecessary down time the next time the machine is to be used. Recommended procedure: 1. Wash the entire machine thoroughly using a water hose or pressure washer to remove all dirt, mud, debris, or residue. 2. Inspect all drives and moving parts. Remove any string, twine, or other material that has become entangled in the auger knives, axles, hubs, or shafts. Be sure the components are clean and move freely. Danger: Before removing material, always park the mixer on a flat, level surface, place controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, wait for all moving parts to stop, and disconnect the spark plug lead and ground it (to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly). Failure to follow these safety precautions can result in serious injury or death. 3. Inspect all hydraulic hoses, fittings, lines, and valves. Tighten any loose fittings. Replace any hose that is cut, nicked, abraded, or separating from the crimped fitting. 4. Inspect all electrical wires and connections for damage and corrosion. Replace as necessary. Follow all safety guidelines given. 5. Inspect auger and knives for damaged or broken components. Repair or replace components as required. 6. Lubricate all grease points. Make sure all grease cavities have been filled with grease to remove any water residue left from washing. 7. Apply spray lubricant to both the steering sprockets and chain (found under the steering handle and console platform), and the speed/direction control bushings (found under the operator s platform) (A50 self propelled model). 8. Apply spray lubricant to all moving parts on the trailer coupler (A50 trailer model). 9. Touch up all paint nicks and scratches to prevent rusting. 10. Top up hydraulic oil reservoir level if necessary. 11. Follow engine manufacturer s guideline for inspection and maintenance of the engine before storage. 12. Increase tire pressure to recommended maximum as specified by the tire manufacturer (check for weather cracks before filling). 13. Move the machine to its storage position. 14. 38 21. TROUBLESHOOTING Your Jaylor mixer is designed to receive a variety of feed material in its mixing chamber to cut and mix prior to unloading. It is a simple and reliable system that requires minimal maintenance. The following section lists possible problems, causes, and solutions to the problems you may encounter with your Jaylor mixer. Should any maintenance and service be required as a result of troubleshooting, refer to section 23. Maintenance and Service Information for assistance. If you encounter a problem that is difficult to solve, even after having read through this troubleshooting section, please call your dealer or distributor. Before you call, please have this manual and the serial number from your machine ready. 41 23. MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE INFORMATION This section covers the maintenance required for your Jaylor mixer. It is essential that your Jaylor receive this maintenance to retain the safety, dependability, and performance originally built into your Jaylor product. By following a careful service and maintenance program for your machine, you should enjoy many years of trouble-free service. In some cases, the maintenance required for your Jaylor may require the assistance of qualified service personnel. Please consult with your dealer or distributor for assistance with such services. Always keep this manual, and leave it with the machine when sold. The maintenance record, plus maintenance receipts, may be needed for warranty repairs. It is suggested that receipts be kept with this section. A convenient log for recording maintenance performed is provided at the end of the maintenance section. 24. MAINTENANCE SAFETY SAFETY FIRST: 1. Follow ALL the operating, maintenance and safety information in the manual. 2. Support the machine with blocks or safety stands when changing tires or working beneath. 3. Follow good shop practices. 4. Use only tools, jacks and hoists of sufficient capacity for the job. 5. When parking mixer, place on a flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. Be sure to let engine and hydraulic system cool to a safe temperature before servicing, adjusting or repairing any of these components. Disconnect the spark plug lead and ground it to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly. 6. Make sure all guards are in place and properly secured when maintenance work is completed. 7. Before applying pressure to a hydraulic system, make sure all lines, fittings, and couplers are tight and in good condition. 8. Keep hands, feet, hair, and clothing away from all moving and/or rotating parts. 9. Clear area of bystanders (especially small children), when carrying out any maintenance, repairs, adjustments or testing. 25. MODEL AND SERIAL NUMBER Always give your dealer/distributor the model number and serial number of your Jaylor mixer when ordering parts or requesting service or other information. 48 30. HYDRAULIC SYSTEM MAINTENANCE Refer to section 28. Fluids and Lubricants for the recommended oil to use in the hydraulic system your A50 model. Use section 36. Maintenance and Service Record to keep a record of all scheduled servicing. All A50 models are equipped with a hydraulic system with reservoir. Check the reservoir oil level daily. Check for oil leaks every 8 hours or whenever the oil level drops rapidly. Inspect the oil condition for cloudiness and/or impurities. To maintain the hydraulic system, use the following procedures: 1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children. 2. Park the mixer on a flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop. Also, be sure to let engine and hydraulic system cool to a safe temperature before servicing, adjusting or repairing any of these components. Disconnect the spark plug lead and ground it to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly Checking Level in Hydraulic Oil Reservoir Each hydraulic system is equipped with an oil reservoir and breather/filter cap mounted on the end of the mixer under frame. The oil level must be checked daily when the oil is cool and machine is level. 49 Important: If it is necessary to add oil frequently to maintain the required oil level, there is a leak in the system. Determine the source of the leak and correct before continuing to operate the machine. Contact your Jaylor Dealer or Distributor should you require assistance Replacing Hydraulic Oil and Hydraulic Oil Filter The hydraulic oil must be replaced YEARLY (or sooner if the oil quality has degraded). At this time, the hydraulic oil filter should also be changed. To complete this procedure, follow these steps: a. To drain the majority of the oil from the reservoir, the suction line will have to be disconnected from the reservoir suction fitting (see Figure 30). If it is too difficult to complete this task with the mixer on the ground, it will have to be set higher on stands or blocks (with sufficient stability and capacity to hold the mixer safely). Be sure to use a lifting or jacking apparatus with sufficient capacity for the job to raise the mixer off the ground. b. Place a large oil pan or pail beneath the suction fitting. Remember, the reservoir holds approximately 8.5 US gallons (32 liters) so a container of sufficient size should be used. Remove the suction line and begin draining the reservoir oil. c. 50 d. Dispose of the used oil in an environmentally safe manner. e. Clean and remove the breather/filter cap as outlined in section 30.3 Maintaining the Breather/Filter Assembly. f. Fill the reservoir with qualified oil. Be sure to fill to the height specified in Figure 29. Remember, the reservoir holds approximately 8.5 US gallons (32 liters). 52 30.3 Maintaining Breather/Filter Assembly Each A50 hydraulic oil reservoir is designed with a breather/filter cap on the top to vent the internal system pressure to atmosphere. It must be kept clean and free of contaminants and debris to function properly. Remove any debris that falls on or near the breather to make sure it can still vent. Remove and clean every 200 HOURS of operation, TWICE YEARLY, or if the hydraulic system develops a leak. To maintain the breather, follow this procedure: a. Visually check the breather every day. Remove any material that falls on top of the breather cap and hydraulic oil reservoir. Keep clean and clear to allow for free flow of air for venting the internal system pressure to atmosphere. Important: Oil is added to the hydraulic system through the breather cap port. Always clean around the breather cap prior to removing it and adding oil. b. Clean the breather every 200 hours of operation, twice annually, or whenever the hydraulic system develops a leak. i. Clean the top of the hydraulic oil reservoir. ii. iii. iv. Remove breather cap. Remove any buildup in the breather passages (on the underside of the cap) and clean using a mild detergent and water. Allow breather passages to dry before reinstalling. v. Reassemble and install in reservoir. Important: When spraying water to clean the mixer, protect the breather and reservoir to avoid contamination. 31. ENGINE OR ELECTRIC MOTOR MAINTENANCE All A50 models are supplied with an onboard power source (internal combustion engine or electric motor). 53 32. AUGER MAINTENANCE Every Jaylor mixer is designed with a vertical auger that is equipped with knives for cutting material Knife Maintenance To maintain knives, follow this procedure: 1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children. 2. Park mixer on a flat, level surface, put controls in neutral, apply parking brake if equipped (if not, block wheels), stop engine, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing, adjusting, repairing or unplugging. Disconnect the spark plug lead and ground it to ensure the engine does not start unexpectedly. 3. Install new knives and tighten mounting bolts to their specified torque. Important: Ensure that no extra hardware and/or tools are left inside the mixing chamber after servicing. 4. Keep knives in good condition. Replace if chipped, dull, or damaged in any way. 5. Knife sharpening is not recommended. Each knife has hardened surfaces on the upper side that keep it sharp. Operating Hint: Below is the recommended initial knife setup for the A50 auger. This setup has proven to work well for a variety of feed rations. The reasoning is as follows: if the knives are setup with too much aggression, feed will have a tendency to move in a circular motion around the drum and jamming will occur. If the knives are setup with too little aggression, then cutting speed will be too slow. Please note that due to the wide variety of feeds and climatic conditions, this setup may not be ideal for some operators. 54 Figure 33 - A50 Recommended Auger Knife Setup 1. Lowest Flat Cutting Knife - This knife should be setup slightly more aggressively than the rest of the flat knives. As shown above, the back tooth should sit 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) out from the edge of the auger flight. The knife is slotted to allow for inward and outward adjustment. 2. Remaining Flat Cutting Knives - These nine knives should not be setup as aggressively as the lowest flat knife. As shown above, the back tooth on all six knives should sit 1-1/4 inches (32 mm) out from the edge of the auger flight. The knives are slotted to allow for inward and outward adjustment. 3. Cutting Angling Blade This blade has the dual purpose of cutting material and pulling feed in towards the center of the auger. 55 32.2 Auger Height Adjustment The auger height is controlled by rotating a bolt under the auger cap (see Figure 34). It is important that the leading edge of the auger does not come into contact with the drum floor during operation. However, it is also important that the leading edge is not too far above the floor. The height will be set at the factory but should be checked occasionally. When measuring this height, rotate the auger one full revolution and find the location where the drum floor and the auger leading edge are closest. At this location, the drum floor and the auger leading edge should be spaced between 1/8 inches (3 mm) and 1/4 inches (6 mm) vertically. Figure 34 A50 Auger Height Adjustment 1. TIRE AIR PRESSURE Inflate tires on all Jaylor A50 models to the manufacturer s recommended pressure. The inflation pressure will be on the tire. Ensure all tires are at the recommended pressure. 56 34. STEERING CHAIN MAINTENANCE (A50 SELF PROPELLED MODELS) It may be necessary to occasionally tighten the steering chain if it becomes too loose. To tighten the chain, see Figure 35 below. Figure 35 A50 Self Propelled Steering Chain Adjustment 1. Steering Handle Bolts These bolts must be loosened before the chain can be tightened. Once the chain has been tightened, these bolts should be retightened to their original torque. 2. Steering Handle and Column Once the bolts are loosened push the steering column in the direction indicated above until chain is tight. Hold the steering column in place and retighten the bolts. 3. Steering Chain NOTE After retightening the chain multiple times, it may be necessary to shorten the chain. If this is the case, remove the chain, take out the connecting link and cut out the required number of chain links. Then, reinstall the connecting link and mount the chain back in place. TRAILER COUPLER MAINTENANCE (A50 TRAILER MODELS) When connecting your trailer to the towing vehicle, it is important that the hitch coupler is adjusted with the correct amount of tension for both smooth and safe trailer performance. A loose connection may cause the coupler to disconnect or to rattle. Likewise, an over-tight lever coupler will make it difficult to connect and disconnect. This can also transmit unnecessary vibration to the towing vehicle. If it is necessary to adjust the trailer coupler so that it mounts securely to the towing vehicle hitch ball, please follow the steps below (also use Figure 36 as a reference): 1. Release the hitch coupler locking lever (to its straight up position). 2. Locate the adjustment nut on the bottom of the hitch coupler. 3. Rotate the nut on the threaded shaft clockwise to increase tightness and counter clockwise to decrease tightness. 4. Remount the trailer coupler on the hitch ball. 5. Push down the hitch coupler-locking lever to its horizontal locking position. 6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 until a snug fit is obtained. Figure 36 A50 Trailer Coupler Maintenance 1.
