4 I n t r oduction By using LexisNexis VIN Services, offered by LexisNexis Risk Solutions, your company can instantly verify a VIN (vehicle identification number), the registered owner's name and address, and the description of a particular automobile Information reported by VIN Services is obtained from official state vehicle registration and title sources This data is updated as frequently as possible typically weekly for most states, depending on the availability of information from state sources The use of the vehicle registration and title information database is governed by the DPPA (Driver s Privacy Protection Act) and various state regulations and agreements The services provided through this product include: VIN Services VIN Standard Vehicle search using surname, address, vehicle year, vehicle make, and if available, the vehicle model and a complete or partial VIN VIN Services VIN Household Vehicle search using surname and address Returned information includes year, make, VIN and registered owner name VIN Services VIN Plate Only Vehicle search using license place and state Returned information includes year, make, model, VIN, and vehicle characteristics VIN Services VIN Only Vehicle search using the vehicle VIN Only Returned information includes year, make, model, VIN, and vehicle characteristics We are committed to contribute to the overall success of your business We are confident that the information included here will enable you to use the VIN Services reports effectively, and help you to reduce time and manpower in making sound underwriting decisions S t a t e Groupings Due to state regulations and agreements, the results information provided by VIN Services vary among three state groupings VIN Only delivers vehicle characteristics and registration information related to a specific VIN Searches are performed based on full or partial VIN 4

5 State Group One This group includes the following states: Alaska Arizona Arkansas Colorado Connecticut Delaware District of Columbia Florida Georgia Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Jersey New Mexico North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oregon Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming The following services and information are provided for states in State Group One: VIN VERIFICATION/VIN DISCOVERY, which includes information on VIN, Year, Make, Model, State of Registration, Plate Expiration Date, Decoded Description of VIN REGISTERED OWNER INFORMATION, which includes information on name and address of the vehicle owner reported for the verified/discovered VIN, based on the following rules: Registered owner name is always reported Registered owner address is reported only when registered surname matches the surname on the input data DEVELOPED VEHICLES, which includes information on other vehicles registered at the address on the order are reported when the registered owner's surname and address match those of the subject on the order 5

6 State Group Two Alabama is the only state in this group The following services and information are provided for states in State Group Two: VIN VERIFICATION/VIN DISCOVERY, which includes information on VIN, Year, Make, Model, State of Registration, Plate Expiration Date, Decoded Description of the VIN REGISTERED OWNER INFORMATION, which includes information on confirmation of the registered vehicle owner's identity (name and address) reported in the following format: DOES REGISTERED OWNER SURNAME MATCH?: YES/NO DOES REGISTERED OWNER NAME MATCH?: YES/NO DOES REGISTERED OWNER ADDRESS MATCH?*: YES/NO Address confirmation requires a surname or full-name match DEVELOPED VEHICLES, which include information on other vehicles registered at the input address Developed vehicles are reported when the registered owner's full name, address and VIN for the subject vehicle matches input The registered owner name for developed vehicles is reported only when matched to input State Group Three No VIN Services or information is available for the states in State Group Three These states are: California Hawaii New Hampshire New York Oklahoma Pennsylvania Virginia V I N Only Report This chapter discusses the different sections of the VIN Only report Field descriptions are included in the succeeding sections 6

7 Report Header Section This is the first section in your VIN Only report It contains report identity details, including the order date and return date of the requested data Report Header Field Descriptions Field Order Date Complete Date Case ID Quoteback Account Node/Location User ID Special Billing ID Reference Number Processing Status Description The date and time the order was placed The date and time that order was completed The unique identifier for this report The requesting insurance company's identification code for this report It may contain the applicant's initials, policy number, etc Date and time may appear beside the quoteback, this is the date and time the insurance company received the complete report The requester s LexisNexis account number The unique LexisNexis assigned identifier for your business location The identifier of the user who ordered the report The billing information identifier for this order This field only appears if your account is configured for it The report identification number within VIN Services If you have questions about your report, provide this number to a LexisNexis representative when you call Customer Support The current status of the report Recap Section This section summarizes the search results of your report order 7

10 V I N - D-Code Descriptions Automobiles Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) This field lists the availability of factory installed anti-lock brakes on the vehicle Airbag Indicates if the vehicle is equipped with an airbag Air Conditioning Indicates whether the vehicle is equipped with an air conditioning system Base Price Belts Indicates the vehicle's base price Indicates whether the vehicle has seat belts Body Style Description of the vehicle s body style Branded Title Indicator Indicates whether the vehicle has ever been totaled by an insurance company Carburetion Indicates the number of the vehicle's engine barrels or whether the vehicle is high-performance, fuel injected, turbo, electronically controlled, etc Country of Origin Indicates the country the vehicle was assembled in Cubic Inch Displacement (CID) The engine piston CID Cylinders The number of cylinders the vehicle maintains For rotary engines, the field will contain an 'R' Daytime Running Lights Indicates the availability of daytime running lights Four-Wheel Drive Indicates whether the vehicle has four-wheel drive 10

11 Front-Wheel Drive Fuel Indicates whether the vehicle has front-wheel drive Indicates whether the vehicle has front-wheel drive Fuel types can include any of the following: B = Electric and gasoline hybrid engine C = Gasoline engine that can be converted to a gaseous (natural gas, propane, etc) engine D = Diesel E = Electric F = Flexible Fuel G = Gas H = Ethanol Fuel Only M = Methanol gas only N = Compressed natural gas P = Propane Gross Vehicle Weight Indicates the gross vehicle weight for the series List Price Variance The difference (coded in $100 increments) between the prices of the shortest wheelbase and the longest wheel base for the model Make The registered vehicle's make Model The registered vehicle's model Number of Wheels The number of wheels the vehicle contains Number Drive Wheels The number of wheels possessing full-wheel drive capability Origin Indicates where the vehicle was manufactured Power Brakes Indicates whether the vehicle is equipped with power brakes 11

12 Power Steering Indicates whether the vehicle is equipped with power steering Power Window Indicates whether the vehicle is equipped with power windows Roofing Options Indicates the type of roof of the vehicle Security Indicates whether the vehicle is equipped with a security system If security is included, this field lists the security type Series/Sub Series Description of the vehicle s model Shipping Weight The base weight of the vehicle series This field will contain all nines (9s) if weight data is not available Shipping Weight Variance The difference (coded in 100-pound increments) between the shipping weights of the shortest wheel base and the longest wheel base for the model Tilt Wheel Indicates whether the vehicle has tilt wheel capability Tire Size The manufacturer's original equipment specified tire size for the series The first two positions represent rim size, and the remaining positions represent tire size Ton Rating The vehicle's ton rating Type (Passenger or Truck) Indicates whether the vehicle is a passenger vehicle or a truck, motorcycle, or unknown Vehicle Expiration Date The date the vehicle s registration with the DMV will expire Vehicle Registration Date The date the vehicle is registered with the state s DMV 12

13 Wheel Base Year Contains the shortest wheel base for this particular truck series model The second 4 bytes contain the longest wheel base for this particular series/model The vehicle manufacture year V I N - D-Code Descriptions Motorcycle ( M ) and Truck (T) Motorcycle M-Displacement : The manufacturer's cubic centimeter (CC) displacement of the model M-Cycles : Indicates number and types of engines 2 = two stroke engines 4 = four stroke engines R = rotary engines Truck T-Cylinders : The number of cylinders for the engine T-Cubic Inches : The manufacturer's cubic inch displacement of the engine pistons T-GVW : The manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating The codes and weight ranges are as follows: 1 = 6,000 and less 2 = 6,001 10,000 3 = 10,001 14,000 4 = 14,001 16,000 5 = 16,001 19,500 6 = 19,501 26,000 7 = 26,001 33,000 8 = 33,001 and more 9 = weight unknown T-Ton-Rate1 : The payload capacity of a vehicle based upon manufacturer's specifications A single code indicates single capacity rating Two codes indicate a range of capacity rating T-Ton-Rate2 : High-end payload capacity of a vehicle based on a manufacturer's specifications T-Drive : The first position represents the number of axles on the vehicle multiplied by two, and the second position represents the number of drive axles multiplied by two 13

14 T-Fuel : Indicates the type of fuel suggested by the manufacturer for the engine B = Electric and gasoline hybrid engine C = Gasoline engine that can be converted to a gaseous (natural gas, propane, etc) engine D = Diesel E = Electric F = Flexible Fuel G = Gas H = Ethanol Fuel Only M = Methanol gas only N = Compressed natural gas P = Propane T-Price-Variance : The difference (coded in $100 increments) between the prices of the shortest wheel base and the longest wheel base for the model T-Weight Variance : The difference (coded in 100-pound increments) between the shipping weights of the shortest wheel base and the longest wheel base for the model Incremental weights for optional equipment are not included T-Wheel Base : The first 4 bytes contain the shortest wheel base for this particular truck series model The second 4 bytes contain the longest wheel base for this particular series/model 14
