2 This document covers the particular mounting parts associated with the Lightwriter SL40. Toby Churchill Ltd Lightwriter SL40 Mounting Systems should be fitted and the appropriate Hazard Assessment carried out. Statement of Intended Use - WCM-QR40-Mountkit This product is intended to mount a Toby Churchill Ltd Lightwriter SL40 onto an appropriate wheelchair, and to provide a carry handle, and two adjustable length straps, in order to facilitate use of the Lightwriter by a person who would otherwise find its support inconvenient. Wheelchair Stability Warning Adding a communication aid and wheelchair mounting system may affect the stability of a wheelchair when it is on a slope, not occupied and the communication aid is swung away from the wheelchair. It is the responsibility of the person fitting the wheelchair mounting system to ensure that the wheelchair s stability is not compromised, and to advise carers of the potential risks. Compatibility This mounting system is suitable for the Lightwriter SL40. It can be adapted to hold other communication-aids weighing up to 2.5 Kg (6 lb). The Wheelchair Clamp fits on round tubing in the range mm ( 5 / 8-7 / 8 ") diameter and square tube in the range mm ( 9 / 16-7 / 8 ") across flats. It will also fit on oval and rectangular tubing. The clamp will attach to vertical or horizontal tubing, or at most angles. The Mountplate has holes compatible with mountings systems by Toby Churchill Ltd, REHAdapt, VESA and DAESSY. Cleaning An alcohol wipe should be used to clean all surfaces. Please contact us if you require replacement foam inserts to be fitted on the Mountplate. The Straps can be hand cleaned or machine washed at a low temperature (using a protective bag to prevent damage to the clips) and allowed to dry naturally. 3 System Description The equipment can be supplied in three forms: WCM-QR40-Mountkit Includes the Wheelchair Clamp, L-Pole and Fittings in addition to the QR40- Mountplate and LW40-Strapset. See pages 6-7 for fitting instructions. WCM-QR40-Mountplate Includes the Quick Release Mounting Plate and Pole Connector, in addition to the LW40-Strapset. It is intended for users who already have a Toby Churchill Ltd mounting system for an older Lightwriter. See page 8 for fitting instructions. WCM-LW40-Strapset Includes a set of Straps and Plastic Base Fittings. See page 8 for fitting instructions. 4 Hazard Assessment & Fitment Record It is the responsibility of the person fitting to ensure that every effort has been made to ensure all foreseeable hazards are identified and the risk of occurrence is eliminated or reduced. The following list should be used as a guide, but the particular circumstances/ environment of the user may provide other hazards not foreseen by the list. In general there is no high risk of injury; the purpose of this checklist is intended for organisations in the supply chain to ensure all reasonable care has been taken. 6 Fitting the Mountkit Selecting the mounting position It is recommended that the Wheelchair Clamp is mounted on the vertical tube behind the front castor-wheel (A), alternatively on a horizontal tube or footrest hanger (B/C). The design of some wheelchairs, particularly electric, makes it very difficult to find a suitable point for attaching a wheelchair mounting system, in which case the Clamp can be mounted on a custom metal plate attached to the wheelchair (D). Mounting positions: A B C D Vertical tube Horizontal tube Footrest hanger Custom metal plate When mounting, you need to consider: Design of the wheelchair. There are many designs of wheelchairs on the market and the mounting possibilities vary widely. Examine the wheelchair to find a suitable area to mount the Wheelchair Clamp, and check that the Clamp and L-Pole will not prevent the footplates folding backwards, or prevent them being lifted off. Check also that it will not obstruct the brake lever, or interfere with other attachments such as a kerb climber (if fitted). Whether the user needs to be able to swing the communication aid to one side by themselves (when getting out of the chair), or whether this will be done by the carer. Establish whether the user prefers the communication aid to be mounted on the left or right side of their wheelchair. This may have implications on electric wheelchairs, because of the wheelchair s control joystick. Whether the mount needs to be moved with the user from one wheelchair to another. Each Wheelchair Clamp should be mounted at a similar height in order to position the communication aid at the right height on each wheelchair; the L-Pole can then be quickly transferred from chair to chair (with the communication-aid attached). 6

7 Mounting the Clamp to the wheelchair 1. Loosen the centre M8 screw one turn so that the Clamp can be rotated freely. 2. Loosen the two M6 screws so the two jaws are wide enough to slide over the tube. If the tube is less than 22 mm dia ( 7 / 8 ") use one or both Jaw Inserts to suit (E). These may be used on any shape of tube. 3. Tighten the M6 screws with flat face of the Clamp parallel to the side of wheelchair. 4. Rotate the clamp to position the L-pole in the desired position. Note that it can be positioned either forwards or backwards to clear armrests, brakes, etc. (F). Tighten the M8 screw. 5. Slacken the two M5 screws in the Height Stop and slide it on the long arm of the L-Pole. 6. Place the L-Pole in the Clamp and locate the Height Stop in the Clamp with the two M5 screws facing outwards. Adjust the L-Pole so the height and position of the communication aid is correct for the user. Tighten the two M5 screws in the Height Stop to lock it in position. If necessary the long arm of the L-Pole can be cut shorter. Please note that stainless steel leaves very sharp edges when cut and these edges must be removed. E F Using Jaw Inserts Alternative Pole Clamp positions To move the communication aid away from the user Lift the L-Pole at least 10 mm ( 1 / 2 "), rotate it 90 o or 180 o and then lower it. The Height Stop will re-lock the L-Pole in this position. To remove the communication aid and L-Pole from the wheelchair Lift the L-Pole out of the Clamp, with the communication-aid attached. When replaced, the Height Stop will ensure that the communication aid is at the original height and angle. 7

8 Fitting the Strapset 1. Fit the Carry Handle if required to the two new Plastic Base Fittings. 2. Remove the two case screws on the underside front of the Lightwriter SL Place the two new Plastic Base Fittings in position on the base of the unit (G). 4. Fit the two replacement longer M3 screws (in place of the case screws) and partially tighten. 5. Fit the four remaining M4 screws to the thread inserts in the base of the unit and tighten all screws. G Underside of Lightwriter SL40 M4 screw M4 screw M3 case screw Carry Handle Fitting the Mountplate The Mountplate has holes compatible with mountings systems by Toby Churchill Ltd, REHAdapt, VESA and DAESSY (H). 1. Firstly, follow the instructions for the QR40-Mountkit and LW40-Strapset. 2. Screw the Mountplate securely to the appropriate Pole Connector. 3. Set the angle of the Mountplate on the L-Pole to suit the user s requirements for comfortable access and tighten screws. 4. Click the Lightwriter SL40 into place with downward pressure to compress the foam on the plate. An audible pair of clicks confirms engagement of the securing clips. 5. The unit can be removed easily by pulling the release handle at either end of the Mountplate (I). Ensure the user and carers are aware of the mounting and dismounting techniques.
