2 New England V6 Modified Rules The New England V 6 Modified Racing Series was created with the intent to provide cost controlled competitive racing. New England V 6 Modified Racing Series encourages this to be a fun family orientated sport for all to enjoy. New England v 6 Modified Racing Series wishes all competitors the best of luck this racing season. This rule book is written with the intent of providing all competitors with a uniform set of regulations for the basic construction of the New England V 6 Modified Racing Series and to reduce the ever present risk of injury to participants competing in or spectators attending a New England V 6 Modified Racing Series event. Automobile racing is a dangerous activity. It is ultimately the responsibility of each participant to insure that his/her conduct and equipment comply with or exceed all the requirements and or recommendations set forth in the New England V 6 Modified Racing Rulebook. No express or implied warranty of safety shall result from publication of, or compliance with these rules. They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the New England V 6 Modified Racing Series and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to participants, spectators, or others. Membership All drivers and car owners competing in a New England V6 Modified Race event, must be a member of the organization, and also have in his/her possession a valid civilian drivers license from the state they reside. A member is defined as a driver, owner or one crew member per car in good standings (paid membership) with the New England V 6 Modified Racing Series. Membership forms and fees must be received prior to April 30. Late membership may be subject to late fees. Membership is valid until December 31 of the same year membership was issued. Age Requirement There is a minimum age of 16 years for any V 6 competitor. Proof of age may be required upon request. Further, if the driver is under the age of 18, he/she must also provide a completed New England V 6 Modified Racing Series minor s release form signed by his/her natural parents or court appointed legal guardians. Officers The New England V 6 Modified Racing Series executive board of directors shall consist of a President, Vise President and Technical Inspector. Additional board members may be added as the need arises by vote of the executive board and general membership. Members as defined above will have voting rights. 2
3 In order to be eligible to hold an officers position an individual must be a member in good standing with the V 6 Modified Racing Series. President: The president shall be elected from the membership at large. The President shall serve for a term of one year or until his successor shall have been duly chosen and shall serve as the chairman of all meetings. Vise President The Vise President shall be elected from the membership at large. The vice President shall serve for a term of one year, or until a successor shall have been duly chosen and shall serve as the Chairman of all meetings of the members of the series in the absence of the President. In addition, to any of the duties which may be assigned by the executive board of directors Tech Inspector The Tech Inspector shall be elected from the membership at large and shall be responsible for the administration and interpretation of all rules and regulations concerning technical specifications and operations. Decisions shall be final and not subject to appeal. The Technical Inspector shall serve for a term of one year, or until a successor shall have been duly chosen. Code of Conduct The owner of the car is responsible for the driver and crew members, this includes in the pits after a race event. A member may be suspended or terminated for any period of time upon the majority vote of the executive board and members. Any violation is punishable by disqualification, suspension fines and or loss of points. This will be determined by the executive board and brought to the membership for vote. All members voting must have been present at the time of the violation. Racing Penalties DQ=no points The following violations are cumulative throughout the race season: Rough riding or excessive contact: 3
4 1 st offense reposition to rear of field at flagger s discretion. 2 nd offense DQ from that event 3 rd offense DQ from that event plus one future race 4 th offense DQ from that event plus two future races Intentional Contact after race or during caution: 1 st offense DQ from that event plus one future race 2 nd offense DQ from that event plus two future races 3 rd offense will not be tolerated automatic loss of membership Unsportsmanlike Conduct (fighting, verbal threats of bodily harm to others, or Endangering safety of others, this includes crew. 1 st offense DQ from that day s event plus probation 2 nd offense DQ plus suspension length to be determined by club meeting of those members not associated with the incident. 3 rd offense automatic loss of membership Meetings The use of vulgar language, alcohol beverages, and or narcotics is prohibited from all V 6 Modified Racing series events including meetings. There will be general meetings held during the racing season and three during the off season: Mandatory meetings will be held at each race event. All drivers are required to attend or will start rear of the field for the feature event. November meeting will be held for nomination and voting of officers. The November meeting will also include rule change proposals. Any rule change proposal must include the current rule and the proposed rule in writing. January meeting will be to review and vote on rule changes. March meeting will be held in conjunction with technical and safety inspections. All meetings will be posted on the web site as to the time and place. 4
5 Technical inspections: Technical Inspector has complete authority to inspect any race car at any time. All race cars will be required to pass technical inspection prior to its first race. At the conclusion of every race top three finishers must report directly to the tech inspection area and will be impounded until released by the tech inspector. Any race car that does not go directly to the tech area at the conclusion of the feature race will automatically be disqualified for the day s events and no points will be scored. Only the driver and car owner or one crew member from the car being inspected is allowed in the tech area. It will be the responsibility of the owner/driver to remove and replace parts as requested by the tech inspector. Any race car found to be illegal will forfeit points earned for that day and scored Tech DQ. Car Requirements: 1. Any American or foreign made hardtop car with an 87 to 102 inch wheel base is allowed. No convertibles, roadsters, station wagons, or pickups are allowed. The bodies may be fabricated, but must resemble the original body. Only open **wheel cars** are permitted. **Both front tires and the right rear tire must be completely exposed. Left rear tire may be exposed at the builder s option. 2. Cars should be in presentable condition for the start of each event. (no hanging or lose parts or panels) 3. The rear panel of the car must remain closed with exception of a 5 inch opening. The opening must be screened in with a minimum ¼ inch mesh. 4. The front windshield must be higher than the driver s helmet. A full windshield is not required. 5. Rear spoilers are allowed. No more than 5 inches exterior. Airfoil effects must remain inside the body area. 6. Body, engine, and chassis do not have to be from the same manufacturer. 7. No front wheel drive systems are permitted. 5

Not Allowed: Aluminum drive shaft, rear windows, and ground skirts lower than the chassis rails, full length belly pans, and belly pans from front to rear of motor underneath, wings of any type or adjustable weight jackers controllable from the cockpit by the driver. All of the above is not allowed. We do not encourage radical cars. Brakes All four wheels must have brakes in good working order. All brake lines must be run and secured in a safe manner. Tires and Wheels Maximum allowable tire circumference is 80 inches. Maximum tire width is 10.5 inches. Tire brand will be Hoosier and the compound to be announced before the start of the season. Maximum allowable wheel width is 11 inches Maximum allowable track width is 76 inches, measured to the outer sidewalls of the tires. All four tires will remain on the ground, measured as raced. Steel Wheels only. No aluminum, alloy or carbon fiber wheels allowed. The first time a car races four new tires are allowed, from that point on only two new tires are permitted per race event. If the first time a car races is within the last two races of the season only two tires will be permitted. It is mandatory that feature race tires have at least 8 laps wear on them, No sticker tires are allowed in the feature event. Transmission: Rear Axle: Weight: No automatic or semi automatic transmissions allowed. Quick change transmissions are only allowed in cars WITHOUT quick change rear ends. Transmissions must have a minimum of 4 forward gears and one reverse gear. Quick change rear ends allowed when used in conjunction with non quick change type transmissions. Minimum racecar weight with driver is
7 All weight must be bolted or welded to the main frame rails, or within the main frame rails. No weight is allowed to be mounted in or to the nerf bars. Maximum ballast is 300 pounds. Maximum left side weight is 60% Bumpers and Nerf Bars: Front and rear bumpers must be centered to within 1 inch of 15 inches from the ground and must be a minimum of 3 inches and maximum of 7 inches in height. Both front and rear bumper ends must be turned inward. Front bumpers must not exceed 30 inches from the center of the ball joints Front bumper can not be more than 3 inches wider than the front frame horn width. Bracing of the bumper is permitted Rear bumper is recommended to be car width Double nerf bars are required on both sides of a v 6 modified in the door areas. The bars must be constructed of either 1.24 diameter x.083 wall mild steel tubing or 1.25 diameter x.065 wall DOM steel tubing. The horizontal tubes must be 4 5 inches apart on center, and run parallel to each other from the rear roll cage hoop to at least the front hoop. Nerf bars must be securely attached to the rear hoop in two places and in at least one place to the front hoop. Do NOT attach nerf bars to the door bars. One vertical tube, of the same material as the nerf bars should be located between the horizontal tubes at the rearward bend, with at least one additional tube located midway along the length of the doubled section. The lower tube must be centered within 1 of the rear wheel axle center height. Nerf bars may not extend outward more than 1 beyond a line drawn from the outside of the front tire in a straight ahead position to the rear tire Fuel Cell and Fuel: Fuel cell with a maximum capacity of 8 US gallons are mandatory. All fuel cells must have inner foam, a rollover spill valve, and must be encased in a steel container. The fuel cell must be mounted in the racecar behind the rear axle, in a secure manner, with at least two straps lengthwise and two crosswise. 7
8 Since this motor calls for at least 89 octane there is no need to buy gas at the track. Only gas that you buy at your local gas station will be legal. You can buy 93 Octane at your local station. No additives at all are allowed. Electric fuel pumps are allowed with the proper feed lines shut off valve mounted on the right side of the driver s compartment so as to be easily reached by an outside attendant. Handle must be red and carefully labeled ON and OFF All fuel lines, filters, and pumps must remain inside the main frame rails. Electric fuel pump power source must be tied in with the engine oil pressure switch that the fuel pump must shut off when the engine is not running. Roll Cage and Frame: The roll cage material must be at least 1 ½ inch diameter round steel tubing of at least.095 inch wall thickness. The main chassis frame rails, from the front bumper rear bumper mounts, are to be made of steel tubing of at least 2 x 2 square inch measurement and at least.095 inch wall thickness. Three evenly spaced horizontal door bars, with at least two vertical tubes evenly spaced between each horizontal tube and between the lowest horizontal tube and the frame rails are required on the driver s side, not including the main frame rail. Two bars are required on the right side, not including the main rail. Three door bars are required on the right side frame rail. Roll cages must be constructed so as to protect the driver from impact from any angle. Gussets are required on the main roof bars Cage bars must be padded in the area of the driver s head, left arm and leg areas. A third roof bar will be mandatory in wide roll cages to protect the driver. A third windshield bar is mandatory A vertical bar is required between the upper and lower bars forming the window opening on the left side to protect the driver s head and left arm and leg areas. The four legs of the front and rear roll cage hoops must be securely welded to the main frame rails. 8
9 The fuel cell must be protected from the rear impact by a full chassis/clip width cross member made of tubing at least.095 wall thickness, and equal in dimension to the frame rails, in addition to the lower fuel cell guard. All new cars constructed as of September 2001 must have four door bars on the driver side roll cage, not including the main frame rail. Roll cage must be 1 ¾ inch round steel tubing by.095 inch wall thickness. The main chassis frame rails from the front bumper to rear bumper mounts are to be made of steel tubing of at least 2 x 2 square inches and at least.095 inch wall thickness. No offset cages are permitted. The roll cage must be the same width as the main frame rails. Floor: The driver s compartment floor extending from the pedal area to beneath the drive s seat, is to be made of a single thickness of at least 12 gauge (0.1000) inch steel, welded to the frame. Riveting is not acceptable. No stacking of thinner sheets to achieve the thickness is permitted. A floor of thicknesses is recommended. Chassis Offset Clutches The center of the chassis is measured between the centers of the top of the upper ball joints. In case of any discrepancy, the center of the chassis will be measured as the midpoint of the distance between the outside faces of the front hubs. All cars must have OEM type upper and lower ball joints. Chrysler screw in, GM and Ford bolt in types allowed. No spherical rod ends or tie rod ends are permitted to replace ball joints. A maximum offset of 10 inches is allowed at the left side chassis rail. The inside of the left rear tire may not be any further to the right than the inside of the outer most left side chassis rail. The driver s body must remain within the frame rails and the roll cage area. Door bars may not extend more than 6 inches outward beyond the outer frame rail. Maximum allowable track width is 76 inches, measured to the outer sidewalls of the tires. Clutch assembly must operate in a stock manner. Clutch assembly must have a pressure plate, clutch disc, throw out bearings, and flywheel. 9
10 Flywheel must be a stock steel flywheel Clutch assembly must be a stock steel assembly No light weight clutches are permitted. Safety: A firewall of at least 22 gauge steel must separate the driver from the fuel cell, radiator, battery, and engine compartment and must be fully sealed. No aluminum firewalls. A padded headrest must be attached to the roll cage behind the driver s head, or must be part of the driver s seat. All interior roll cage and side bars must be properly padded A securely mounted fire extinguisher within the driver s reach is mandatory. Permanently installed fire suppression systems are recommended. Drivers must wear 2000 or newer SNELL approved safety helmets, eye protection, and SFI approved fire retardant drivers suit with fire retardant gloves and shoes. Safety equipment must be maintained in good condition. A neck brace (horse collar) is also recommended. Seats must be made of aluminum of at least.095 thickness securely mounted to the chassis at the bottom and back of the seat. At least three straps (1x 1/8 inch) mounted horizontally or vertically are recommended. Seats with an integral headrest are recommended. A 3 inch lap belt, shoulder harness and crotch belt with date tags attached and not more than 3 years old at the time of inspection are required. A securely attached, approved window net is required in the driver s window. A blow blanket or scatter shield, approved by the Tech inspector is required around the top and left side of the clutch housing. Batteries must remain inside the main frame rails, in front or behind the firewalls. No batteries in the driver s compartment. A battery shut off switch is mandatory and must be mounted on the right side of the driver s compartment such that it can be easily reached by outside attendant. The switch must be red and clearly labeled on and off. All cars must have two approved drive shaft safety hoops, recommended to be made of at least 1 inch wide by inch thick steel strap. 10
11 Mufflers All Modified mufflers are required to be fitted with working mufflers at all times, and at all race events. No alterations of the muffler are permitted, with the exception of the welding on of tabs or other means to attach the muffler to the exhaust system. Engine Engine must be a Chevy crate motor, part number , which is a 3.4 v 6 motor or a 2.8 v 6 engine which is also allowed. The 3.4 v 6 is the same figuration as a 2.8 v 6 motor. Only these two motors will be allowed in the New England V 6 Modified Racing Series. If participant desires to run a stock 2.8 v 6 engine, available at your local junk yard, in place of the 3.4 V 6 engines you are only allowed to bore it just enough to clear the cylinders, using stock parts with a 9:1 compression like the 3.4 V 6 engine. There will be no altering of any parts (hogging, polishing ect.) The 2.8 V 6 engines may use the same cam shaft as in the 3.4 V 6 the cam shaft part number is Hydraulic flat tapped lift:.427 I,.454 E I,.216 E. Participants using a 2.8 V 6 engine must also follow the claim it rule same as the 3.4 v 6 engine participants and any other rules listed. The 2 piece Edel Brock intake is mandatory; top part number is 3789 and base part number is This manifold is a 4 barrel manifold. You must adapt it down using a 1 inch space to a 2 barrel Holley. There is no hogging or polishing allowed in the intake or head. To run a 350 or 500 Holly CFM carburetor, it must pass stock specs and be able to pass the no go or go gauge. After market oil pans are acceptable, the manufacturer will be KEVKO. All motors will be wet sump. All motors must have a MSD 6AL ignition system to run a max 6000 chip. All motors must have a working distributor in them. No crank fire ignition or any other ignition system will be allowed except the stock electronic distributor. All motors must have steel heads. No aluminum heads are allowed. Engines must be self starting with an operating starter system. 11
12 A one quart overflow container for the cooling system is required. Tech Inspection The tech inspector has the complete authority to inspect any and all racecars before, during and after a race event, regardless of the car s finish. The Tech Inspector will check the winning car for total weight, left side weight % displacement and carburetor. Failure to pass inspection will result in a disqualification from that day s event. At the tech inspector s discretion, any number of race cars may be required to pass inspection after the event finishes. All cars will be under the approval of the tech Inspector. The tech inspector s decision concerning matters pertaining to his duties shall be binding and final. Protests After the feature event, any one car owner may protest the legality of another single race car provided: His car is part of the event The protest must be specific and in writing. No generalizations will be accepted. The protesting owner must post a cash bond of $ and written protest to the tech inspector within 30 minutes of the completion of the feature event. The car owner posting the cash bond and written protest has the right to accompany the tech inspector during the protest inspection. If the protested race car is found to be in non conformance with the rulebook and or the tech inspector interpretation the $250 cash bond will be returned to the protesting owner and the protested race car will be disqualified from the day s events and will forfeit any points accrued. If the protested car is found legal and in conformance with the rulebook, the protested car s owner shall retain the $250 cash bond. Radios and Scanners Radios and scanners are permitted. Scanners are mandatory at Seekonk Speedway. Claim it Rule 12
13 All motors and participants of a feature race event qualifying is not included will run under a $2,500 claim it rule. The $2,500 claim it rule is as follows: The tope 20 finishing cars of the feature may claim the motor of any one of the first through fifth finishing cars of the feature event for $2,500. The motor is claimable less the carburetor, intake, pulleys, flywheel and clutch assembly. The motor must be claimed within 30 minutes of the finish of the feature event. The $2,500 must be presented in cash to the tech director. Any race participant who refuses to abide by the claim it rule (give up their motor) therefore, breaking the claim it rule, will no longer be a member of the New England V 6 Modified Racing Series. This rule will be enforced to maintain an affordable event for all the race participants. 13
