2 Introduction The 125cc motorcycle and scooter class has grown to become a major force in Europe s diverse motorcycle markets, providing both a starting point for novice riders and comfortable, convenient, low-cost transportation for riders of all needs and skill levels. Honda also offers an assorted and growing range of compact motorcycles and scooters that have proven attractive to both novice riders and those looking for compact and reliable alternatives to the family car. Until quite recently, many of the motorcycles available in this class have been powered by 2-stroke engines, which have been steadily losing their appeal owing to the high-pitched noise and smelly, polluting exhaust fumes they release. By contrast, nearly all of Honda s models in the 125cc class have been powered by relatively clean and quiet 4-stroke engines which easily conform with Europe s strict new emissions regulations. In fact, from this year forward every new Honda street motorcycle made and sold in Europe will feature this dependable, environmentally friendly technology. Most of Honda s offerings in the 125cc class over the years have been strongly if not exclusively oriented toward the street and urban traffic conditions. However, one of the greatest joys to be found in motorcycling is straying off the tarmac to explore dirt roads and mountain trails that bring one closer to the deeper pleasures of nature. Now, with the goal of attracting riders to the exciting possibilities of both on-road and off-road riding, Honda proudly introduces the all-new XR125L, a small and friendly on-road fun bike that offers confident and dependable dirt riding capabilities to provide a ready answer whenever off-road adventures call XR125L - E2

3 Development Concept The new XR125L was specially developed to offer a lively ticket to a wider world of riding fun that will appeal to all ages, tastes and ranges of experience. Its aggressive enduro styling carries the dynamic lines of Honda s most competitive off-road racers, while its zippy power and swift handling agility feel equally at home dicing through dense city traffic or bumping along a dusty back-country trail. With a push-button electric starter to make startups easy, the XR125L s simple yet rugged air-cooled 4-stroke engine delivers a strong surge of low-tomidrange power for quick performance around town and effortless climbing ability when the terrain demands it. Its compliant, long-travel suspension and easy reach to the ground work together to provide confident control both onroad and off, and its wide, plushly constructed seat carries two in easy-riding comfort. 4 Styling The all-new XR125L was specially designed to give Europe s young street riders a heady taste of the great outdoors while looking as super-smart on the street as it does on the trails. True to the XRL s aggressive dirt bike look, attention quickly focuses on its sharply styled tank-side shrouds, which project the dynamic off-road look of Honda s most popular race-winning motocross machines while directing a cooling flow of air to its rugged single cylinder engine. The XRL s broad, comfortable bolt-on seat offers ample room for two, and an easy 820mm reach to the ground which combines with the compliant longtravel suspension to provide an ideal match of on-road and off-road riding capabilities. Two-piece sidecovers feature a number plate design in keeping with established off-road racer tradition, while the large front fender bears a strong resemblance to the bright polypropylene unit mounted on Honda s popular new CRF450R 4-stroke motocross champion. Its bright 35W headlight is encased in a compact polycarbonate shell for lighter weight and a more aggressive off-road look, and its compact meter assembly takes position above the steering head, providing an easy-to-read half speedometer and the usual assortment of indicator lights for confident operation. At the rear, the XRL s bright taillight is integrated under the tail cowl for easy recognition in urban traffic conditions. 5 Colouring Concept Showing a bright and lively pride in its off-road roots, the new XR125L carries Honda s winning competition colours, with bold Honda Wing graphics that closely identify it with the motocrossers and enduro bikes that have won Honda countless championships over the years. 6 Engine The all-new XR125L is powered by a rugged and reliable air-cooled 124cm 3 Honda 4-stroke engine tuned for strong low-to-midrange performance and an impressive surge of acceleration that will appeal to both novices and experts alike. Its one-touch push-button electric starter combines with a precise, maintenance-free digital electronic ignition to ensure quick and easy starts. For smooth, reliable performance, cool, clean air flows to the responsive 22mm carburettor from a large aircleaner located under the seat which unusual for its class features a compact, dry cartridge-type paper filter element that keeps both dust and oil out of the intake. Routed up under the seat like most of Honda s off-road bikes, with an attractive chrome-plated steel end cap peeking out from under the right-side cover, the XR125L s large-capacity 3-litre canister-style exhaust silencer combines with the engine s inherently quiet 4-stroke operation to minimise annoying noise output, while being tuned for top low-to-midrange performance. The engine s solid band of power is conveyed to the rear wheel by way of a smooth-shifting 5-speed transmission and a light-action clutch XR125L - E6

7 Chassis The new XR125L is built on a rugged, new semi-double-cradle steel tube frame that offers optimal strength, rigidity and light weight for quick, assured handling over virtually all road and riding conditions. This frame was specially designed to provide a low seat height and easy reach to the ground that should appeal to a wide cross-section of both experienced and novice riders. It is supported front and rear by long-travel, bump-smoothing suspension systems that ensure excellent riding comfort and confidence-inspiring handling over the diverse range of road surfaces to be found in Europe. Up front, the XRL s light and responsive 31mm leading-axle hydraulic fork offers 180mm of smooth and compliant axle travel for precise steering control on road and off. At the rear, a simple monoshock suspension system features a conventional damper supporting a rigid box-section steel swingarm for 160mm of comfortable, well-cushioned rear wheel travel, whether travelling solo or with a pillion passenger. Braking duties for the XRL s lightweight wire-spoked wheels are handled by a wide, 240mm front disk brake stopped by a lightweight and responsive dualpiston calliper, and a reliable standard 110mm leading/trailing shoe rear drum brake. Tyres are rugged, wide-bodied dual-purpose treads designed to provide an easy, comfortable ride on the street and confident control when straying off the beaten path. This lightweight and simple frame also features a set of bolt-on pillion step stays that can be easily removed and replaced as the situation demands.
