4 NUMBER PLATES Which documents do you need to buy a number plate? Legal Requirements By law in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, you will need to provide proof of your personal details and ownership of the vehicle registration. The DVLA states that we must check one document from both of the lists below. However, please note that whatever combination of documents is used, they must be sufficient to check name, address and entitlement. Proof of identity: / Driving licence a driving licence is preferred because it is a secure, government issued document showing both name and address. Driving licences issued in the UK and outside the UK are acceptable and do not need to include a photograph. / Current bill issued by an electricity, gas or water supplier, a landline telephone bill or a council tax bill. / Bank or building society statement issued within the last 6 months / Passport issued in the UK or outside the UK is acceptable. / National identity card issued by the government of a state or territory other than the United Kingdom. / Debit or credit card issued by a bank or building society. The requirement for a photograph no longer applies. / Police warrant card / Armed forces identity card Proof of entitlement: / Vehicle registration certificate (V5C) the preferred document / Tear-off slip (V5C/2) from V5C (Section 10). / Certificate of entitlement to a mark (V750) / Cherished transfer retention document (V778) / Vehicle licence renewal form (V11) / Temporary registration certificate (V379) / Authorisation certificate (V948) with official DVLA stamp, or a downloaded copy of the ev948 / A letter of authorisation from a fleet operator (including a lease/hire company).
