3 Land Rver 4x4 in Schls UK Cmpetitin Regulatins 2015/16 C1.0 Welcme Welcme, The Land Rver 4x4 in Schls Technlgy Challenge is an Internatinal Science, Technlgy, Engineering & Maths (STEM) prjects which challenges teams t build a radi cntrlled fur-wheel drive (4x4) vehicle t the specificatins prvided. The vehicle will be required t successfully navigate and cmplete bstacles n an ff rad test track that is just as demanding as the real thing, and emulates the capabilities f a full size 4x4 vehicle. Each team will enter the vehicle int a Reginal Final t cmpete fr a place at the UK Natinal Final. We will assist yu by mnitring yur prgress thrugh the duratin f the challenge. This will help yu in the run up t reginal finals and will ensure yu will be ready t cmpete. This dcument will identify the challenge alng with the learning utcmes, accreditatin and benefits f being invlved in the prject. 4 Land Rver 4x4 in Schls UK Cmpetitin Regulatins 2015/16 C2.0 Definitins C2.1 Reginal and UK Natinal Final The Reginal and UK Natinal Finals are managed by Engineering in Mtin and are held ver several weeks in January, February and March (Check website fr actual dates and lcatins). Each event will be held n ne day nrmally between 08:30am 16:30pm. C2.2 Wrld Finals Event The Wrld Finals event is managed by Engineering in Mtin and is held ver several days t include varius prgrammed scial and cmpetitin activities. The event aims t prvide all participants with an educatinal and persnal develpment Experience f a Lifetime. Specifically, the cmpetitin aims t determine the Wrld Champins f Land Rver 4x4 in Schls accrding t the 2014/15 Land Rver 4x4 in Schls Internatinal Technical and Cmpetitin Regulatins. C2.3 Cmpetitin Prgram The cmpetitin prgram will detail the schedule f judging activities fr all teams. C2.4 Wrld Finals terms and cnditins fr entry This is a dcument issued by Engineering in Mtin which cnstitutes an agreement between EIM, ICC s and supervising teachers regarding participatin by teams in the Wrld Finals event. C2.5 Key perfrmance indicatrs (KPI s) These are prtins f text that feature n the screcards within a crrespnding pints range. The KPI s describe the type f evidence the Judges will be lking fr in rder t scre the team apprpriately. C2.6 Prject elements These are any materials and resurces that the team presents as part f its entry fr any judging activity. C2.7 Engineering Drawings CAD prduced drawings which shuld be such that, alng with relevant CAM prgrams, culd theretically be used t manufacture the fully assembled car by a third party. Such drawings include all relevant dimensins, tlerances and material infrmatin. Land Rver 4x4 in Schls engineering drawings include detail t specifically identify and prve cmpliance fr the virtual carg and wing surfaces. C2.8 Cmputer Cding Cmputer Cding can be integrated int vehicles with the use f a Raspberry Pi. C2.9 Track Assessment This is a timed track assessment f each vehicle t successfully navigate arund a specially made ff rad track t test the team s vehicle s 4x4 ability. 5 Land Rver 4x4 in Schls UK Cmpetitin Regulatins 2015/16 C3.0 Entry Class The challenge is split int tw classes fr entry int the cmpetitin, Beginner and Prfessinal. Each team must decide which class they wuld like t enter befre taking part in the cmpetitin. C3.1 Beginner Class Any team entering the challenge fr the first time can pt t enter the Beginners class by purchasing a Land Rver Land Rver 4x4 in Schls starter kit (recmmended) cntaining a remte cntrlled vehicle. Other remte cntrlled vehicle mdels are available but may nt be suitable fr the cmpetitin. The starter kit will als include a vehicle battery and battery charger. This vehicle will be allwed t be entered int the challenge hwever Beginner Class teams must manufacture the fllwing items n their vehicle as a minimum requirement (Please refer t the 2015/16 Technical Regulatins). C3.1.1 Vehicle Bdy Shell - The vehicles bdy must have a shell that cvers all the main mechanical elements including the vehicles battery, all mtrs and all fur (4) wheels and tyres frm plan view (abve) but still fit within the verall technical dimensins f the vehicle. C3.1.2 Vehicle Electrics (light and tilt sensr) - Each vehicle must have a lateral (Centre t left and centre t right) tilt detectin system t trigger lights r a buzzer n the vehicle when the angle tilt is greater than 25, and an autmated system t turn the vehicle lights n when the light level drps t 25 lux (belw a set level dark). C3.1.3 Tw Bar - All vehicles must be fitted with a fixed r deplyed tw bar which must be carried by the vehicle thrughut the cmpetitin. The team must als have an in-depth knwledge and understanding f the vehicles suspensin, drive train, chassis and wheels. Teams entering the challenge can nly cmpete in the Beginners Class fr ne year and then enter in the Prfessinal Class fr fllwing years. Beginner Class r Rkie teams (nt schls) that that entered the previus challenges wanting t re-enter the 2015/16 challenge can nly enter as a Prfessinal team. These teams may reuse cmpnents frm their rkie vehicle but as a minimum must alter/mdify the vehicle bdy, vehicle chassis and all vehicle electrics (light and tilt sensr) themselves, n tp f either manufacturing r purchasing and mdifying ther elements f the vehicle such as the drive train, suspensin, steering and wheels. C3.2 Prfessinal Class This class is pen t new ( Rkie ) and existing teams wh design and manufacture their vehicle t the rules and regulatins, manufacturing as a minimum requirement (Please refer t the 2015/16 Technical Regulatins). C3.2.1 Vehicle Chassis The vehicles chassis must be either manufactured r dramatically altered frm a starter kit chassis and include either manufactured r purchased and mdified ther elements f the vehicle such as the drive train, suspensin, steering and wheels. Any ff the shelf items used must be declared in the team s prtfli, finance sheets and Bill f Material (B.O.M). All teams must fllw a safe wrking practice at all times f their vehicle build. C4.3 Only members f the fficial cmpeting team (maximum 6) are permitted t wear the team s unifrm C4.4 During the cmpetitin, nly the fficial cre 6 teams members can represent the team at registratin, pit display set up, verbal presentatin, prtfli judging, engineering judging, scrutineering review, critical rule fix, racing, n-stage presentatins and any direct cmmunicatin with the Chair f Judges r Event/Cmpetitin Directrs. C4.5 A team can be frmed frm any ut f schl rganisatin such as hme schled students, Scuts, Cadets r Girl Guides C5.0 Registratin Fee Any schl/rganisatin can build a remte cntrl 4x4 vehicle using the Land Rver 4x4 in Schls Technical Regulatins fr free but each team wanting t cmpete and enter the 2015/16 Land Rver 4x4 in Schls Technlgy Challenge will be required t pay a registratin fee fr their reginal final. This registratin fee will nt be refunded r rlled ver t the next year. Teams prgressing nt the natinal final will nt be required t pay any additinal fees. C5.1 Reginal Final Registratin Fee This is the cst t enter a Land Rver 4x4 in Schls Technlgy Challenge reginal final is 75 + VAT per team. This entry fee is nn-refundable and must be paid in full befre yur reginal final date t Land Rver 4x4 in Schls. 7 Land Rver 4x4 in Schls UK Cmpetitin Regulatins 2015/16 C6.0 Time Scale Managing yur time is ne f the mst imprtant elements f the challenge. If dne crrectly all aspects f the challenge will be cmpleted in time and will aid in successfully entering and attending a Reginal Final and hpefully a UK Natinal Final. It is recmmended that yur team meets nce a week minimum t begin with, and then increase the number f sessins as yu draw clser t yur reginal final and set deadlines. When yu d meet, try t make the sessin as prductive as pssible with all team members wrking n their element f the prject. We will assist yu by mnitring yur prgress thrugh the duratin f the challenge. This will help yu in the run up t Reginal Finals and yu will receive regular cntact frm yur Mentr and the Land Rver 4x4 in Schls team. C6.1 Reginal Finals A ne day event held in the fllwing regins between January March Nrth East Nrth West Central Suth East Suth West Sctland Nrthern Ireland Wales C6.2 UK Natinal Final Depending upn the number f UK Natinal finalists, the UK Natinal Final will either be held n ne day r as a tw (2) day event in April Please check the website fr regular updates and annuncements f the actual dates and venues fr bth the Reginal Finals and the UK Natinal Final. C7.0 Starter Kits Any team entering the challenge fr the first time can pt t enter the Beginner Class by purchasing a Land Rver 4x4 in Schls starter kit (recmmended). The starter kit cnsists f all the essential cmpnents t get yu started in the challenge: Rck Crawler Remte Cntrlled Car 2.4 GHz Transmitter 2.4 GHz Receiver Battery Pack Battery charger unit Other rck crawlers are available but may nt be suitable fr the cmpetitin. Please nte all f the abve items are nt t be included in yur prject budget and can nly be used if entering the Beginner Class in the challenge. If yu require additinal equipment such as a mre pwerful mtr yu will need t surce these separately. 8 Land Rver 4x4 in Schls UK Cmpetitin Regulatins 2015/16 Teams that have participated in previus years are encuraged t use cmpnents frm their existing vehicles, particularly the essential cmpnents listed abve but must nt re-enter their existing vehicles frm previus years int the new 2015/16 seasn withut the minimum mdificatins made t it as detailed in the 2015/16 Technical Regulatins. Please allw time fr delivery s we recmmend yu rder yur starter kit as sn as yu can and take the delivery time int accunt when rganising yur timing plan. C8.0 What t d First? Okay, s yu have decided yu want t take up the challenge and enter the Land Rver 4x4 in Schls Technlgy Challenge, what d yu d first?... C8.1 Frm yur team - Find three t six yung peple and frm yur team. The team members shuld all be ambitius, enthusiastic and dedicated yung peple wh have a passin fr designing, engineering and prblem slving. Of curse, yur team needs a name, a name that will stand ut against the rest s chse wisely. Think abut yur schl / rganisatin, team members, a 4x4 theme, a name that s easy t remember r simply a play n wrds. Teams are reminded they must wrk in a safe manner at all times and fllw the safe wrking practice. C8.2 Team Member Jb Rles Each team member shuld be allcated a jb rle and title. They will then begin sle respnsibility fr that element f the challenge. Each team member shuld chse a jb rle that suits their ability best and will gain the mst enjyment frm ding. Ideally, ne jb rle shuld be allcated t each team member, hwever yu may have t duble up n yur rles and respnsibilities depending n the number f peple yu have in yur team. One team member must als duble up as the team s health and safety fficer and will be respnsible fr and ensure each team member wrks in a safe manner and fllws the safe wrking practice at all times. The fllwing jb rles are examples f what culd be cvered by the team members: Team Manager (maximum f 1 persn) This persn culd be respnsible fr managing the team, ensuring that the prject is cmpleted n time and may need t wrk clsely with all members f the team, ffering assistance where necessary. The team manager may als take n the rll as financial manager and cntrl the team s budget spend. Design Engineer This persn wuld be in charge f the styling, perfrmance and ability f the vehicle. Design engineers will need t liaise with the manufacturing engineer t ensure their ideas can be realised. Manufacturing Engineer In this rle, the team member(s) wuld be respnsible fr advising team members n the manufacture f the car and the cnstraints f the machining/prductin prcess. Resurces Manager As Resurces Manager, this team member wuld rganise time, materials and equipment fr designing and making the vehicle. Graphic Designer This persn s rles wuld include being respnsible fr prducing the clur schemes applied t the vehicle, including any special spnsrship decals, tgether with the any additinal team marketing materials. They will liaise with the design engineer t ensure any schemes will fit the shape f the vehicle and the resurces manager fr additinal marketing develpment. Remember, n ne persn is mre imprtant than anther! C8.3 Schl/Organisatin Supprt - Apprach yur schl / rganisatin and tell them what yu are ding and ask fr supprt in any way pssible. That desn t have t be financial supprt, it culd be use f facilities, equipment, materials, classrm cver fr reginal finals and the natinal final r simply the use f the schl / rganisatin s mini bus t travel t the challenge. C8.4 Register - As sn as yu can, register yur team with Land Rver 4x4 in Schls via the website C8.5 Cmpnents - Apart frm the cmpnents yu will decide upn during yur design prcess yu will need the cre cmpnents such as the transmitter, receiver, servs and battery pack. These can either be surced separately r yu have the ptin t buy a starter kit with these essential cmpnents in frm Land Rver 4x4 in Schls (Please see abve sectin 5.0). C8.6 Seek Spnsrship At the first pprtunity, seek spnsr frm external cmpanies / rganisatins t bring in funding fr yur vehicle. Spnsrship can cme in many frms frm mney, cmpnent dnatin r printing, t external help and guidance. C8.7 Recruit a STEM Ambassadr At the first pprtunity recruit a STEM Ambassadr frm industry nt yur team. This is highly recmmended. These are Engineers frm engineering cmpanies including Jaguar Land Rver and WNT and als frm the IET prfessinal Institutin wh will be able t supprt yur team by acting as industrial advisers, mentrs r prviding hands n supprt t yur prject and s giving it an essential industrial partnership. T recruit an ambassadr apprach yur lcal STEM Ambassadr cntract hlders wh will be able t put yu in tuch with a suitable engineer t supprt yur team as they develp their ideas. C9.1 Mentrs are Jaguar Land Rver and WNT Engineers assigned t each team that registers t take part in the challenge, t guide and advise teams thrugh their design and build. All cmmunicatin with yur mentrs will be dne via and can be dne by any member f yur team. Mentrs are a very valuable resurce t yur team s make sure yu make full use f them t get the best frm yur vehicle design. CREST is a natinally recgnised award which is als recgnised by industry and emplyers. Yu can find ut mre abut CREST n their website, C11.2 The Duke f Edinburgh Scheme - Within the skills sectin f the scheme, the yung peple participating in Land Rver 4x4 in Schls Technlgy Challenge will be able t gain a Duke f Edinburgh Award. T find ut mre abut the Duke f Edinburgh Scheme g t, C11.3 Industrial Cadets - The Industrial Cadets (IC) prgramme aims t raise awareness f lcal career pprtunities in the industrial and manufacturing sectrs, develping emplyability skills and raising the aspiratins f yung peple. Student s aged taking part in 4x4 in Schls will be given the pprtunity t becme an Industrial Cadet and gain an insight int industrial and manufacturing cmpanies such as Jaguar Land Rver t raise awareness f lcal career pprtunities in these sectrs. T find ut mre abut Industrial Cadets g t, C11.4 Arkwright Schlarship - Students that have pre-registered with Arkwright Schlarship thrugh their schls and have successfully wn thrugh t the UK Natinal Final, are invited t be interviewed by Arkwright fr ne student t be awarded a schlarship spnsred by Jaguar Land Rver. This schlarship is finical supprt fr their cntinued study. C11.5 Harper Adams University Schlarship - Harper Adams University ffer a schlarship t ne student frm the winning UK Natinal Champins team. C12.0 Judging Criteria All teams will be judged by a panel f experienced engineering and/r educatinal experts. Each team will be given the pprtunity t present t the judges and explain any aspects f their vehicle, team and prject hwever they wish. C12.1 Critical Rules - IMPORTANT: The belw scrutineering rules are classified as critical rules. If a team breaks any ne r mre f these critical rules they will nt be eligible t win the Best Engineered Vehicle, Best Track Perfrmance award r verall (UK Natinal Champins) s Please take extra time t check yur cars dn t break any f the belw critical Technical Regulatins. 12 Land Rver 4x4 in Schls UK Cmpetitin Regulatins 2015/16 C12.3 Yu will be asked nt t turn yur transmitter n until it is yur track run. Yu may als be asked t hand in yur transmitters at the beginning f the day and nly be issued with them fr yur track run. C12.4 The rganisers may make additins t the vehicle. e.g. the additin f a self-adhesive sensr. C12.5 A Chair f Judges will be appinted and annunced at each reginal final and natinal final. The Chair f Judges will versee all judging prcesses and will make verall decisins when necessary. C12.6 A phtgraph will be taken f yur vehicle with and withut the bdy shell and kept n file fr fllwing year entry. C13.4 Judging prcess / prcedure Verbal Presentatin judging is scheduled fr the same duratin f ther judging sessins, usually 15 minutes. Teams will be given an pprtunity at the start f their time t set-up and test their laptp and any ther presentatin technlgies and resurces. The team will infrm the judges when they are ready t begin. The judges start timing the 5 r 8 minute duratin and will prvide a discreet time warning signal when ne minute f presentatin time remains. The team will be asked t cease presenting when the time limit has been reached. At the cnclusin f the team s presentatin time, the judges may chse t prvide sme feedback and / r ask any clarifying questins they feel necessary. Verbal Presentatins may be filmed fr judge s review r prmtinal and future resurce purpses. C13.5 Verbal Presentatin judging prvisins Land Rver 4x4 in Schls will prvide a dedicated private space, such as a small meeting rm, where each team will deliver their presentatin t the judges. This space will include a data prjectr, screen and multimedia sund system. These will be in fixed psitins but usually with sufficient cable length t allw teams sme freedm fr chsing where they wish t lcate their laptp. A single table will als be made available with its use and lcatin in the presentatin space being ptinal. The Judges will usually intrduce themselves then ask the team t stand clear f their display s the Judges can cnduct assessments. Team members may be asked questins by Judges t help them find certain cntent and r seek further explanatin. Design prtflis will be returned t teams s that these can be integrated int each teams display. C14.5 Design Prtfli requirements The design prtfli must be in a printed hard cpy frmat f A3 r similar size. The prtfli is limited t 20 pages which include the frnt and back cvers. This can be 20 single sided r 10 duble sided sheets. If a prtfli cmprises mre than 20 pages, the Judges will nly review the first 20 PRINTED pages fr assessment purpses. There MUST be cntent related t prject management, the team, design ideas, design develpment, research, testing, timing plan (gannt chart), finances (B.O.M) and evaluatin are cmmnly presented within the prtfli. C14.6 Pit Display setup and parameters C C C C C C Land Rver 4x4 in Schls will prvide each team with a display space including A trestle style table (use f this is ptinal). The precise space descriptin and dimensins will be annunced clser t the event. Display spaces are nrmally f apprximate dimensins 2m wide x 1m deep. A time perid will be scheduled fr when all teams will set-up their pit displays, usually n the mrning f the cmpetitin day prir t judging cmmencing. A time limit will be enfrced. Land Rver 4x4 in Schls reserves the right t apply a penalty f up t 50 pints at the discretin f the Chair f Judges fr teams that d nt cmplete their setup within the time limit, d nt leave their stand in a safe state and clear their pit and surrunding area f all rubbish. N part f the teams cmpleted pit display is allwed t prtrude beynd the physical dimensins f their allcated pit space. This includes anything that might prtrude abve the pit space highest pint e.g. flags. ONLY student team members are permitted t set-up their pit displays. C19.1 Budget - The budget fr each team t spend n cmpnents t build their vehicle is 175 (GBP British Pund) excluding the cst f registratin, starter kit r equipment. Teams are encuraged t make as much as pssible themselves. If yur team is successful in prgressing nt the natinal final an additinal 25 will be allwed n yur budget t make a maximum spend f 200. C19.2 Spnsrship - Teams are encuraged t seek spnsrship fr external cmpanies r rganisatins fr buying cmpnents and develping their team image and branding.
