3 Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Technician Training & Professional Development Program at Fort Scott Community College What is the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Tech Program? We are the only exclusive Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Technician and Professional Development program that offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree. FSCC is accredited by the North Central Accreditation and our program is endorsed by the Kansas Board of Regents. This program was designed with you, the enthusiast and the Harley-Davidson Dealership network, in mind. You will spend time in the classroom, as well as at a summer internship learning all aspects of diagnostics, repair, sales, marketing, parts management and customer service. Will I earn a Degree? Yes! At the end of the two-year program, students are eligible to graduate with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Motorcycle Service Technology from Fort Scott Community College. Once you have completed your Associates of Applied Science degree, you may transfer into a baccalaureate degree program at Pittsburg State University. FSCC and Pittsburg State University s Kansas Technology Center have cooperated to make the transition into a four-year program as smooth as possible. How do I become a Student? Potential students of the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Technician Training & Professional Development Program must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants also need to fill out the FSCC Online Admission Application and the Harley-Davidson Training Program Application. Applicants must take the placement test, Compass (If you score a 21 or higher on your ACT in both Math and English, then you will not have to take placement tests.). These tests will assess skills in reading and math. They are used by FSCC to insure proper placement so that you will have the opportunity to succeed. Applicants can find out more information, or schedule a time to take the assessment test by calling the admissions office at (800) or (620) The Compass test can be taken at most community colleges and your scores sent to FSCC s admissions office. Applicants will be required to complete an admissions interview prior to entry into the program at the Harley- Davidson Training Center. What opportunities are Available? There are many exciting career options in the Harley- Davidson Service Family. In comparison to other colleges, Fort Scott Community College s tuition and fees per credit hour are very competitive. 5 Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Technician Training & Professional Development Curriculum SEMESTER 1 HDT 1013 Introduction to Harley-Davidson, 3 hours. The Introduction to Harley-Davidson course will offer a wide variety of skill sets including, but not limited to model Identification, vehicle inspection, TALONes creating work orders, PHD training, service bulletins, Tech Tips, and h-dnet.com. Students will be exposed to the culture & history of Harley-Davidson, building and maintaining a portfolio, building an electronic resume and cover letter, and other H-D related projects to enhance their ability to think critically in addition to honing their basic computer and public speaking skills. This class will introduce the students to community service projects including coat, toy and food drives plus a fun run to raise money for the local SkillsUSA chapter allowing them to attend leadership development events statewide. HDT 1023 Shop Practices & Precision Measuring, 3 hours. This course will introduce the students to engine component identification, safety in the shop, tool usage, and precision measuring. In addition to workplace safety this course will emphasize the proper use of measuring tools, torque wrenches, hand tools, and promote the understanding of how to recognize the difference between a component that is within tolerance, and one that is in need of replacement. Documentation will be maintained through the use of TALONes. Precision measuring tools will include but not be limited to the following: Micrometers, Dial Calipers, Dial Indicators, T gauges, Small hole gauges, Feeler gauges, Surface plates, & Torque plates. HDT 1043 Service Requirements I, 3 hours. Service Requirements I will focus on safe work practices in the shop environment and teaching entry level technician skills. In addition to teaching the hands-on skill set this course will focus on the importance that the soft skills play in dealing with the customer. Emphasis in this class will focus on knowledge of subject matter, work ethics, communication skills, customer relations, customer retention and critical fasteners. The student will perform multiple services on Touring, Softail, Dyna, V-ROD, and Sporster motorcycles. Students will also document all services with the use of TALONes, create work orders, check for service bulletins, tech tips and do a walk around inspection. The valve lash adjustment on a V-ROD bench motor will be also be taught in this class. HDT 2053 Parts and Management, 3 hours. The Parts and Management course will educate the students with the skills needed to be successful in the day to day operations in a Harley-Davidson parts department. TALONes will be the software management system utilized with emphasis placed on electronic parts catalog (EPC), point of sale, creating quotes, cashing out, special orders, shipping and receiving, tracking orders, creating tasks list, and kit inquiries. Along with TALONes training, the students will work with parts and accessories catalogs, cable measuring tools, installation of docking hardware, collision quotes, and understanding Harley-Davidson part numbers and Harley-Davidson model and VIN number identification. SEMESTER 2 HDT 1053 Frames and Suspension, 3 hours. The Frames and Suspension course will focus on the hands-on skills needed to make adjustments necessary to ensure proper maintenance and safety for all Harley-Davidson motorcycles. This course will explore how all the components of the chassis work together to maintain a safe and comfortable ride. Students will exercise practical skills making proper adjustments to steering head bearings by the use of Swing Away, Fall Away, and Swing Back techniques. Also the students will make adjustments to primary and secondary drive systems, front and rear motor mount replacements, rear fork removal and reassembly, Springer rocker fork adjustment and rebuild, conventional hydraulic fork, and cartridge fork rebuild on Touring, complete brake system overhauls including pad replacement, caliper, and master cylinder rebuilds, with rotor inspection for distortion, run-out and thickness. A large emphasis will be placed on changing both front and rear tires on all models. HDT 1073 Service Requirements II, 3 hours. Service Requirements II will build on the educational experience offered in Service Requirements I. Students will experience hands-on learning in this course performing 10,000 mile services on Sporster, Dyna, V- ROD, Softail, and Touring motorcycles. In addition to basic services students will do a valve lash adjustment on a V-ROD, rear belt replacement on a big twin, primary repair and replacement, wheel bearing replacement, Intake manifold seal replacement, and wheel lacing and truing. Work orders with proper documentation of issues found, events, parts, and hours added to work orders will be completed using TALONes.

6 SEMESTER 2 - CONTINUED HDT 2043 Service Retail Experience, 3 hours. The Service Retail Experience will be geared toward service writing in the Harley- Davidson dealership network. This course will include but not be limited to creating and understanding model identification, proper documentation of work orders, visual inspection, communication skills, customer relations, customer retention, the C.U.S.T.O.M. sales process, creating price quotes, knowledge of TALONes scheduler, EPC, creating special orders and how to track them, the warranty process, cashing out with work orders and items, navigate h- dnet.com part locator, part availability, kit inquiry, warranty codes, creating tasks lists for 1K, 5K, & 50 K services on all models, and allocating technician hours. SUMMER INTERNSHIP HDT 1074 Cooperative Internship at Harley-Davidson Dealership, 4 hours. This course will be considered an extension of the classroom supported through the partnership between the Harley- Davidson dealership network and the Fort Scott Community College Harley- Davidson Technician Training Center. For a twelve week period during the summer session students will enter a Harley-Davidson dealership and gain hands-on real world experience in the service and/or parts department as a technician, service writer, or parts associate. Under the guidance of the FSCC Harley-Davidson program our dealership network will afford the student an opportunity to experience working in a Harley-Davidson dealership. On many occasions students who complete a successful internship will be offered employment after completion of their degree program. SEMESTER 3 HDT 1033 Basic Electricity, 3 hours. The understanding of Basic Electrical theory will include but not be limited to safety, using a systematic approach, using electrical diagnostics & service manuals; ohms law, watts law, amps, current, volts & voltage drops; resistance, simple, parallel & series circuits. In addition to understanding the theory of electricity the students will experience hands-on learning working with starting, charging, and ignition systems, Multimeters, Digital Technician II, breakout boxes, soldering & wiring diagrams. HDT 1063 Basic Engines & Drive Systems, 3 hours. The Basic Engines & Drive Systems course will introduce students to the Twin Cam A engine, the Sportster engine and the 5 speed & 6 speed transmissions. Students will disassemble and reassemble engines using a variety of measuring tools including but not limited to torque wrenches, vernier micrometers, dial calipers, small hole gauges, telescopic gauges, surface plates, and torque plates. SEMESTER 4 HDT 2013 Advanced Engines & Drive Systems, 3 hours. The Advanced Engines & Drive Systems course will build on the knowledge of the Basic Engine course. This class will offer hands-on experience with the Twin Cam B engine, and the V- ROD water cooled powertrain, valve lash adjustments & 6 speed transmissions. Students will again disassemble and reassemble engines using a variety of measuring tools including but not limited to torque wrenches, vernier micrometers, dial calipers, small hole gauges, telescopic gauges, surface plates, and torque plates. HDT 2023 Diagnostics & Troubleshooting, 3 hours. The Diagnostics & Troubleshooting course will test the students knowledge, and ability to think critically, using skills developed earlier in the Basic Electricity class. Students will be given work orders assigned through the use of TALONes, along with a disabled motorcycle. Within a reasonable time frame they will locate the issue, find the cause, and then they will make the corrections needed to return the motorcycles to proper running condition. Tools used in this class will include but not be limited to Digital Technician II, breakout boxes, Multimeters, & Electrical Diagnostics manuals. HDT 2064 Harley-Davidson Dealership Experience/Capstone, 4 hours. The Harley-Davidson Dealership Experience/Capstone course will allow the students an opportunity to test their hands-on skills, and knowledge in a simulated dealership environment. Students/technicians will be assigned a work order offered through TALONes with events totaling three plus hours using Harley-Davidson flat rate time. Success will be measured by their ability to complete the task in a safe, correct, and timely manner. Assessments in this course will include, but not be limited to valve lash adjustment on V-ROD ; draining coolant and fluids; primary and clutch adjustment and replacement; 1K and 25 K services; compression checks; removal and correct replacement of front and rear tires and brakes; clutch cables; starters, throttle, idle, and brake cables; wheel bearings; drive belts; manifold gaskets; fuel tanks; fenders and side covers; rocker bearings on springer front forks; and rocker box gaskets.
