4 x 4 Off-Road All Terrain Training Proposal for IRISH WIND ENERGY ASSOCIATION
Programme Objectives To provide an opportunity to learn and practice the skills required to safely operate and extract maximum benefit from a 4x4 vehicle To assist with safe On-Road driving (Snow etc) To comply with SHAW Act 2005 & Gen App Reg To Instil confidence, with responsibility and so reduce risk Driver Instructors Nifast Instructors are holders of internationally recognised qualifications from either: RoSPA RSA RTITB DIA NUI M.ILT RSI DF Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Road Safety Authority Road Transport Industry Training Board Diamond Advanced Motorists Certificate in Training & Continuing Education Member Institute of Logistics & Transport Rally School Ireland Advanced Control Course Defence Force AF 154 certified Venue Training would be conducted at our 4 X 4 Off Road track in Oldcastle, co. Meath. The training is delivered in the drivers own 4x4 as this would be the vehicle they will use on the job and as such, they need to have confidence in it. A minimum of one 4X4 per two drivers is required. The vehicle will require a low range transfer box and adequate ground clearance. Unsuitable vehicles include: Santa Fe / Free Lander / X-Trail / Rav 4 / Tucson Most suited are: Land Cruiser / Hi-Lux / Pathfinder / Terrano / Defender / Discovery / Pajero / Ranger & Mazda L2500 and the like. Page 2
The course: A theory session of approx 45 minutes will introduce the drivers to the design characteristics of their vehicles and cover the limitations of its on-road handling as well as the off road capability. The various tyre options and control selection (low-range) will be explained as this lends to a clearer understanding of what to expect when we go on track. This session includes the safety briefing with an emphasis on vehicle sympathy. Practical: On Track Vehicle Training: Close coaching on a variety of hazards graduating in difficulty over 3 training sections. Feedback directly to the driver and to the company, in writing, on the following points: - Negotiating Hazards, Mud, Tracks, River Bed Appropriate pace / Tilt Angles Safe approach to steep ascents / descents Concentration / Calm Attitude Pace on approach to hazards Feathering the throttle, feeling the steering Negotiating water hazards Recovery / Extraction Use of Traction Control Performance Assessments Each participant will receive: A detailed Drivers Report returned to the employer Certificate of Course Attendance Constructive feedback from trainer Off Road Handout for future reference. Page 3
The Track The track is purpose built for All Terrain Training and is set in 3 sections: Section 1: Section 1 is designed to demonstrate to the driver the ability of the vehicle with minimal driver input. In other words, it will drive itself up hills and all they have to do is steer. This helps prevent over-reaction in later sections. It is over-reaction and indecision which causes most incidents in off road vehicles, particularly roll-overs. This section also demonstrates the enormous torque going to the drive wheels, an excess of which will cause the vehicle to bog down. Section 2 Section 2 involves traversing slopes and will demonstrate the maximum tilt angle which a driver should not exceed (we reduce this by 10 degrees). We demonstrate what the correct reaction is to a vehicle which feels like it is going to roll over. It is the driver s ability to respond correctly to this situation which will dictate the outcome. This section also covers steep climbs on poor surfaces (mud) and how to descend the slope safely and without damage to the vehicle and under complete control. At this point the driver is now working with the vehicle instead of fighting it. Section 3 Section 3 encourages the driver to apply power when it is required and to lift off when it is not. The driver s ability to Feel the vehicle will be enhanced here through a series of gullies, steep slopes, water hazards and tilt areas coming at them one after the other. Cost For the full course ½ day (2 drivers) 500 Full day (max 5 drivers) 800 Cost includes track hire, tea / coffee /scones on arrival, and if a full day a light lunch. Start time 09.30am Please note: Drivers who are booked the course but who do not show will be chargeable. A PO number (If required) will need to be raised in order to secure a booking If you require overnight accommodation the night before: Headfort Arms Hotel, Kells approx 20mins from the site Currans B&B, Oldcastle approx 5mins from site. Page 4
Each vehicle will require a low-range transfer box, adequate ground clearance, full tank of fuel and operational spare wheel. The windscreen washer bottle should be topped up. The oil level should be checked and topped up, as the gradients are steep in places. Drivers should be advised to being rough clothing and suitable boots etc as weather can vary. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. Thank you for your enquiry and we hope to be favoured with your order.
