Introduction This guide has been created for the safety of all members of our school community. It is in response to behaviour that is illegal and in some cases potentially life threatening to members of our school and local community at peak times. Many of the issues raised are because of a lack of common courtesy by parents and carer drivers. I am excited to inform our community of the recent changes to parking and traffic flow to the church side of our school. The School Education Board has been working with Monash Council on these improvements during 2015 and I would like to thank them for their hard work. These traffic and parking improvements are intended to ease congestion, improve traffic flow, increase parking options for families and ensure safer visibility of pedestrians at peak times around the school gates. The improvements consist of; The introduction of a new 2 min drop off zone in Mora Ave Moving permit parking from Mora Ave to outside the church in Johnson St The implementation of a preferred traffic flow direction to compliment these changes. Please take the time to read all the information in this booklet and I encourage you to pass it onto anyone else in your family network who picks up or drops off your child at school. This to ensure a smooth transition and a safer traffic solution for all of our Sacred Heart Community. Additional copies of this booklet are available at the school office. Regards Brian Martin Principal Sacred Heart Primary School Oakleigh 3 P a g e

Safety Education and Driver Etiquette 4 P a g e

Gutter / Kerb Side Drop Off The safest exit for children out of the car is on the gutter or kerb side of the road. Always check for pedestrians or obstructions before opening the car door. Too dangerous Do not let children out of the car into traffic. 5 P a g e

Sharing 2 Min Zone with Others Efficient use of the 2 min drop off zone will ensure maximum use of this space during pickup and drop off times for all families. Think of it as a Hug & Kiss zone. Do not leave your car. Move up if the space in front becomes available. This allows other cars in at the back. 6 P a g e

No Stopping Parking in a No Stopping zone is dangerous and reduces visibility for other motorists on busy roads. It also impedes traffic flow and causes congestion. Do not park in No Stopping zones. 7 P a g e

Pedestrians Crossing Mora Ave & Johnson St Pedestrians crossing on this corner need to cross with caution as there is no designated crossing point. The vision of drivers is also obscured by this bend and parked cars. Take extreme care when crossing in front of the school gates at all times. 8 P a g e

3-Point U-turns 3 point U-turns within 20 metres of busy intersections and 2 minutes zones are dangerous and delay traffic flow. Cars can come quickly around the corner without notice and there is risk of a collision. They should be avoided. Warrigal Rd & Davey Ave No 3 point U-turns. Go around the block. 9 P a g e

Utilising Parking Spaces Effectively When parking, consider the space around you to ensure other drivers can fit in front or behind you where there is enough room. Warrigal Rd & avey Ave Do not hog car spaces. Move up! 10 P a g e

Illegal Parking Parking outside the church on Warrigal Rd is illegal. You cannot park on footpaths or in front of the school gates. It is too dangerous manoeuvring back into the traffic flow on these busy roads. Illegal Parking No illegal parking in these red zones. 11 P a g e

40km/h in School Zones Obey the maximum 40 km/h speed limit at all times around school zones. During peak times there are lots of child pedestrians, this may mean driving at substantially less than 40 km/h. Always drive to the conditions at a safe, slow speed. No speeding. Slow down to under 40 km/h. 12 P a g e

Parking over Driveways Parking over driveways restricts the residents in the street from entering or leaving their property. It also reduces a driver s sight lines for pedestrians crossing the road. There are plenty of legal parking options. Do not park across driveways 13 P a g e

Section 2 New Parking, Signage & Zones 14 P a g e

2 min Parking Area - Zone 1 Drivers are not to leave their cars unattended and must move forward in line to let others in behind. Drivers should drive around the block if 2 minutes has expired to allow others waiting in line to use it. Don t hog parking zones. Move Up! 15 P a g e

2 Min Parking - Zone 1 The blue areas indicate where the 2 min parking zones are located. They operate from am and 3:00-4:00 pm on all school days. 2 Minute drop off zone 16 P a g e

Permit Parking Area - Zone 2 Permit parking is for staff ONLY, not local residents. Permit zones operate 8am - 5pm on all school days. Some staff arrive during drop off and pick up times and require a car park to be left vacant. Permit parking zone Do not park in these permit zones 17 P a g e

2P Areas - Zone 3 Parking is permitted in these green areas for a maximum of 2 hours during the times indicated. 2P Parking 18 P a g e

No Stopping Areas Zone 4 Stopping for any period in No Stopping areas is not allowed. This includes the whole eastern side of Johnson Street. (marked in red) NO Stopping Anytime 19 P a g e

No Stopping Rule Explained To 'stop' a vehicle means to stop and remain stationary for even the shortest period of time. You must not stop or park your vehicle in any area where a 'No Stopping' sign applies. This includes the pick up or set down of passengers or goods. No Stopping sign (for a length of road) No Parking sign (for a length of road) No Parking Rule Explained You must not park your vehicle in an area where a 'No Parking' sign applies, unless; a. you are dropping off or picking up passengers or goods b. you do not leave the vehicle unattended - that is, move more than 3 metres away from the car, and c. you complete the dropping off or picking up as soon as possible, i.e. within two minutes. 20 P a g e

Section 3 Alternate parking close to school 21 P a g e

Alternative Parking Options There are alternative 2P parking options very close to the school that are underutilized. 1. Mill Rd, between Haughton Rd and Johnson St Note: parking on the south side of Mill Rd is only available before 3pm. It is a permit zone after 3pm. 1 min walk to school Parking in the following green zones is only a 1 minute walk to school 22 P a g e

Alternative Parking Options 2. Johnson St, between Mill and Haughton Roads 1 min walk to school Parking in the following green zones is only a 1 minute walk to school 23 P a g e

Alternative Parking Options 3. End of Mora Ave near Haughton Rd 1 min walk to school More parking, less hassles 24 P a g e

Alternative Parking Options 4. Davey Ave, especially in the mornings, is underutilised. Entry from Davey Ave into the school takes the same amount of time, including the Foundation Area, as using the church side of the school. 2 min walk to school Davey Ave in the mornings is quieter and has less traffic. 25 P a g e

Section 4 Traffic Flow Preferences 26 P a g e

Preferred Traffic Flow To ensure our 2 min zone works efficiently, the preferred flow of traffic is highlighted below for Mora Ave. (see green arrows) 2 min zone Follow the green arrows 27 P a g e

No Right turns To ease congestion and improve traffic flows away from the school, it is preferred that no right turns are made into Warrigal Rd from Davey Ave during peak times. Turn left instead 28 P a g e
