5 Bicycles Sectional Committee, TED 16 FOREWORD This Indian Standard (Third Rev ision ) was adopted by Bureau of Indi an Standards, a fter the draft finali zed by the Bicycles Sectional Committee had been approve d by the Tran sport E ng ineering Div ision Council. This standard was first publ ished in 1955 and subseque ntly revised in 1963 a nd T he re vision of this standard is being taken up to update the standard and to incor po rate latest seat pill ars be ing used in the bicycle industry. The compositio n of the Com mittee res ponsible for the for mulation of this standard is given in Annex A. For the purpose of decid ing whether a particul ar requirem ent of this standard is complied with, the final value, obser ved or calculated, express ing the results of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in acc ordance with IS 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding off numerical values (revise d)'. Th e number ofsignificant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

6 Indian Standard BICYCLE - SEAT PILLARS - SPECIFICATION ( Third Revision) 15626: SCOPE This standard specifies the material and dimensional requirements for seat pillars being fitted in popular sizes of bicycles in use in the country. NOTE - This standard docs not cover seat pillar made other than steel. 2 REFERENCES The following standards contain provisions, which through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard. At the time of publication the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision and parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibiljty of applying the most recent editions ofthe standards indicated below: IS No : : : (parts 1 to 3) : : : MATERIAL TItle Electroplated coatingsofnickel plus chromium and copper plus nickel plus chromium - Specification (third revision) Specification for electroplated coatings of cadmium on iron and steel (secondrevision) Specification for electroplated coatings of zinc on iron and steel (second revision) Steel tubes for bicycle and cycle rickshaws - Specification (second revision) Cycles - Safety requ irements of bicycles (first revision) Cycles - Safety requirements of bicycles for young children The tubes for the seat pillars shall conform to IS 2039 (Partsl to 3). 4 DIMENSIONS 4.1 The seat pillars shall conform to the dimensions given in Fig. I, 2, 3 and 4. The dimensions and tolerances of tubes for seat pillars shall conform to IS 2039 (Parts I to 3) The diameter of the portion where the seat clamp is to be fitted shall be ± 0.12 mm as to allow a mm clamp to be fitted without any play. shake or abnormal tightness. 4.3 Neck of the seat pillar shall be knurled other than non-necked seat pillars based on the agreement between the supplier and the customer. 4.4 Dimensions mentioned in this standard are reference illustration only. Final dimensions including thickness shall be arrived between the supplier and the customer. 5 FINISH 5.1 The seat pillars shall be finished smooth and enamelled or nickel chromium plated or cadmium plated or zinc plated or powder coated In the case of nickel chromium plating the electroplated coatings shall conform to Service Condition No. I (Classification No. FelNi lob Crr) of IS 1068 with the proviso that p- or d-nickel and me or mp-chromium may be substituted for b-nickel and r-chromium respectively In the case ofcadmium plating the electroplated coatings shall conform to Service Grade No. 2 (Classification No. Fe/Cd 8) ofis In case ofzinc plating the electroplated coatings shall conform to Service Grade No.2 (Classification No. FeIZn 7.5) ofis In case of powder coating - bright/mat finish with thickness of Min shall be applied. 6 TESTING Seat pillar shall comply with the testing requirements of IS or IS depending upon the type of bicycle application. 7 MARKING 7.1 Each seat pillar shall be marked with thefollowing : a) Manufacturer's name, initials or trade-mark; b) Country of manufacture;

7 IS 626 : 2009 c) Yearand month of manufacture; and d) Minimuminsertion mark. 7.2 BISCertification Marking Theseatpillar may alsobemarked with thestandard Mark The use of the StandardMark is governedby the provisionsof the Bureau ofindian StandardsAct, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder.
