PAUL LUSTENHOUWER. It is that time of year where staying hydrated is your number one priority. I can not say enough about keeping water with you. However, some of these bottles are getting thinner and puncture easily. By keeping them in you trunk, they are subject to puncture, at which time the liquid goes down where the CB is located and make that unit beyond repair. You can eliminate that problem by drilling a small hole in the bottom of the trunk. Don't drill to deep as there are wires under there and hitting them will create another whole set of problems. Better yet keep your bottles in a small cooler. Remember to look for the small hidden hamburger in the newsletter and the first one to contact me will win the prize that month.. This month we are starting our fund drive for N.F.N. (Neighbors Feeding Neighbors). This year we are going to raffle off a 1994 Honda Gold Wing trike. The trike has been donated to our chapter and has a value of app. $10, All money from the raffle will go to the charity. I am asking all of our chapter members to help sell as many tickets as possible. Lets help these kids eat on weekends and vacation day's. I will explain more at the regular meeting. Paul C.D. What is it? Chapter P gathers on 2nd Thursday of each month at Spring Creek BBQ on Hwy 377 in Granbury, TX.
2 Butch Schmit, ACD Motorcycle Safety Tips: Avoid Accidents Avoid motorcycle accidents by observing these safety tips. For many experienced motorcycle riders and enthusiasts, safety is a priority. Most bikers know that riding a motorcycle is more dangerous than driving a car. When motorcycle accidents do occur, the consequences can be very severe. According to a recent study, there were 35 times more deaths from motorcycle accidents than from car accidents. Emergency room personnel often refer to motorcycles as "donor mobiles." The best way to avoid becoming the next motorcycle statistic is to pay serious attention to safety. Many motorcycle accidents can be avoided by constant vigilance and education about the safest way to ride. Here are some of the most important safety tips to keep you riding on the road for many years to come. Wear a helmet. Evidence overwhelmingly suggests that wearing a motorcycle helmet significantly reduces the incidence of head injuries in accidents. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, for every 100 motorcyclists killed in a crash while not wearing a helmet, 37 would have survived if they had been wearing a helmet. And that doesn't even count the enormous reduction in non-fatal injuries achieved by helmets. Make sure your helmet meets Department of Transportation standards and have one available for passengers. Keep in mind that in many states it s illegal to ride without a helmet. Get professional training. Motorcycle riders who are self-taught or taught by friends account for more than 90 percent of bikers involved in motorcycle accidents. Getting professional training in motorcycle riding could save your life. Don t drink and ride. About half of the accidents involving a single motorcycle are caused by speeding or alcohol use --usually these go hand in hand. Not only is it against the law to drink and ride a motorcycle, it s extremely dangerous. Wear protective clothing. Protect yourself by wearing a jacket, full-fingered gloves, long pants, and boots. Your clothing should be made of abrasion-resistant material, such as leather, and fit close to the body. Loose clothing can impair your vision. Choose bright colors so that other motorists can see you. Maintain your bike. Making sure your motorcycle is in excellent running condition is of the utmost importance to safety. And don t confine your maintenance to the engine and brakes. Frequently check your tires, headlamps, turn signals and other gear. Know your skill level. Know your skills, and ride accordingly. Riding on the road is not the time to test your expertise or to overestimate your ability. Learn about the common causes of motorcycle accidents. Knowledge is your friend. Learn about the most common situations that lead to motorcycle accidents. Think of ways you could avoid those accidents, take note when those situations might occur, and when you are in those situations, take extra care. Avoid road hazards. Road hazards, including debris in the road or slick conditions, are more dangerous for motorcycles than for cars and can lead to severe injuries. Some conditions that are dangerous to bikers are not readily known. Take the time to learn about the many road dangers and learn how to handle your bike safely when presented with those hazards. If you re anything like me, you probably also think I ve been riding my whole life, I know how to ride a motorcycle. And while that statement is probably true for most of us, all those other drivers out there on the highway, especially those texting, may not always see motorcycles around them. Ride often, Ride smart, and BE SAFE!
3 We came across the following sayings and thought we d share. Some are very true. Which one is yours? Only a biker knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window. Good coffee should be distinguishable from 50 weight motor oil. Gray-haired riders don't get that way from pure luck. Marie Schmit, MEC People are more violently opposed to fur rather than leather because it s safer to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs. Well-trained reflexes are quicker than luck. Don t argue with an 18-wheeler. A bike on the road is worth two in the shed. Remember when sex was safe, and motorcycles were dangerous. Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous. It is, however, unforgiving of inattention, ignorance, incompetence, or stupidity. When in doubt, use full throttle. It may not improve the situation, but it will end the suspense. Never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly. A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel. Remember riding isn t inherently dangerous...crashing is. Life is about moments. Don t wait for them, create them. When you re riding lead, don t spit. You can have more fun on a gallon of gas than a barrel of booze. If you can't get it going with bungee cords and electrician's tape, it's serious. Sweat wipes off, road rash doesn t. If you ride like there s no tomorrow, there won t be. I like to ride on days that end in y. Never be ashamed to unlearn an old habit. The only time you can have too much fuel is when you re on fire. If you have fuel in your tank, you re not lost. Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking. When life throws you a curve, lean into it. There are two types of people in this world, people who ride motorcycles and people who wish they could ride motorcycles.
4 June Chapter Rides With the weather getting hotter, KSU are getting earlier to enjoy some of the below 90-degree temps. Our first ride of the summer we took a ride up to Muenster to eat lunch at Doc s Bar & Grill. We had 7 trikes (couples) and 2 bikes (single) along for the ride. Some of us started out in Granbury, meeting up with another small group in Weatherford and picked up the last few riders at a neat little donut shop in Springtown. After some coffee and few donuts, we continued up Hwy 51 to FM 922 and took a few backroads to get to a destination. Muenster is little German community and Doc s Bar & Grill served up some great tasting food for lunch. After a scrumptious meal and great company, we strolled down the street to visit a few antique stores. We continued down the road to the local grocery store on Main street, a few of us purchased some of the local offered German meats. Heading back was a little warmer ride than the ride up (well maybe hot), so we stopped off at Bram's in Decatur for some cool beverages and cold ice-cream along with some more great fellowship. From there we headed back down Hwy 51 with riders peeling off at their destinations along the routes home. Be sure to check the website ( for upcoming rides and events. You can view pictures of each ride under the Media/Gallery section. If you have taken pictures on our rides and want to share them, send them to me and I ll post them. We have rides about every other weekend, if you have a ride you would like to see please share it with Paul, Ed or Vince. We can add rides to any of the open weekends. Riding bikes is a great way to share a common interest while creating and growing new friendships. The bond of the ride makes looking forward to next with great anticipation. 11 Planning for a Long-Distance Ride How many of you are planning for a multi-day ride this summer (such as Wing Ding in Knoxville)? I am already making my list and checking it twice for our ride up there via the west coast. Other than the obvious TCLOC and maintenance items, I have a pretty extensive list that I have developed over the years for what and how to pack. These are some of the highlights of things to consider before you head out: Lightweight synthetic clothing such as T-shirts and underwear can be washed in a hotel sink and dried overnight (cotton fabrics take too long to dry in this manner). Don't fold your clothes roll them. They take up less space that way. On long trips, consider bringing your rattiest underwear (or other clothing), then just throw it away when you're done with it! Flip Flops are easy to pack and feel so good after a long day in boots. Zipper-lock plastic bags of various sizes can be extremely useful for organizing items in saddlebags and duffle bags. They can make it easier to find and retrieve particular items without unpacking your entire motorcycle. Use the onegallon size to pack one day's worth of clothes jeans, undergarments, and shirt. This makes it easier to unpack just what you need. Take a couple of soap pods and a roll of quarters for washing clothes. Pack items that have more than one use. A multi-tool is handier than a basic pocket knife. When traveling with other riders, conserve space by comparing packing lists and eliminating duplicate items. Don t forget your battery chargers for cameras and cell phones. Bring spare batteries if applicable. When traveling (two-up) with a spouse or "significant other", ask yourself questions such as: "Can we share a tube of toothpaste?" or "Can I get by using her shampoo for a week?" Medical History.consider an Alert Bracelet. Also your Medical Health Insurance Card If you take medication, be sure to bring an extra 3-5 days worth longer than you intend to be gone. Cooling vests and extra bottles of water to combat heat exhaustion. A small towel can be wrapped around your neck during a rainstorm to keep water from running down your back and doubles as a shop rag. Even if you don t have a planned stop each day, plan a general route and leave it with someone. Don t forget your Gold Book! Check the cargo weight limits of your bike - as wells as the bags and racks - and adjust tire pressure and suspension accordingly. Few things are as easy to pack as money or credit cards. If you're struggling with whether or not to bring a particular item, consider simply buying it on the road if you need it.
12 If you watch the ounces, the pounds will take care of themselves. When possible, lighter is better. When loading your bike, keep as much weight as possible close to the bike's center of gravity. That means low and toward the tank, distributed evenly from side to side. A day or two before you leave, do a dry run. Pack the bike and go for a short ride, then adjust the load as needed. If you're camping, set up your tent once or twice before you leave (and don't forget to waterproof it). Practice setting it up in the dark. With your bike fully loaded for your road trip, check your headlamp to make sure it s properly aimed. Pack your cold weather and raingear no matter what time of year it is. Weather can be unpredictable even in the summer months. Carefully program your GPS if you have one, but still take some maps for backup. Enjoy this riding season and I hope to see you in Knoxville! Ride Often, Ride Safely, and HEY! Be careful out there! Randall Reese

I change the synthetic oil on a regular basis. Plugs were changed not too long ago. The battery is less than a year old. Within the last 6 months the front forks were rebuilt; brake pads were replaced, clutch and both brake systems were drained, and fluid replaced & bled, rear drive unit was serviced, reverse & front brake switches were replaced, left handlebar switch cluster was replaced, headlight rock guard was installed. The engine runs great; the transmission shifts smoothly; reverse works well. There is a 40 channel CB, AM, FM, Cassette player which all work and deliver excellent sound either through the helmet speakers or the front and rear bike speakers. Seat, both back rests and arm rests are in excellent shape. There is a luggage rack installed on the trunk lid, and a spoiler with running/brake light installed. The wing has front rotor covers and chrome crash bars front and rear. She has miles on her, with a trailer hitch and is wired for a five-pin trailer plug.
