1 Driver s Licence With Condition X You are required to drive a vehicle fitted with an ALCOHOL IGNITION INTERLOCK DEVICE Condition X is indicated on the front of your licence, and a description appears on the back.

2 Who is covered? Any person convicted of an alcohol-impaired driving offence who must undergo a comprehensive assessment or a maintenance assessment at the request of the Société de l assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). To be allowed to take the wheel again, this person must get a driver s licence with Condition X from the SAAQ. This condition requires the mandatory use of an alcohol ignition interlock device for one, two or three years, or for life, depending on the number of convictions received within a reference period of 10 years and the offence for which the person has been convicted. To be eligible for a driver s licence with Condition X: Your penalty period for alcohol-impaired driving must have ended. The assessment report must be favourable. You must meet all the conditions required to obtain a new licence, if applicable. Which licences can be issued with Condition X? Probationary and regular driver s licences only.

3 Note: Condition X does not authorize the operation of a motorcycle, moped or motorized scooter. If your driver s licence or a class of your licence has been expired for 3 years or more, you will have to pass the knowledge and road tests again before obtaining your licence or that particular licence class. What is an alcohol ignition interlock device? An alcohol ignition interlock device is a device that prevents a vehicle s engine from starting if it detects the presence of alcohol in the operator s body. This device relies on technology similar to that of the breathalyzer test used by police officers to measure your blood alcohol concentration. Where is it available? The only alcohol ignition interlock device authorized by the SAAQ is available, by lease only, at GUARDIAN INTERLOCK SERVICE (GIS) centres, or through participating LEBEAU VITRES D AUTOS branches. To find out the location of centres or branches that lease the device, call

4 How can you get a licence with Condition X? The SAAQ will send you a letter authorizing the installation of an alcohol ignition interlock device. Here are the steps to follow to obtain such a licence: 1 Make sure you still qualify for the alcohol ignition interlock program by calling the SAAQ at If you qualify, make an appointment with a GIS centre or a participating LEBEAU VITRES D AUTOS branch Bring the authorization letter from the SAAQ with you to the appointment to sign a service agreement for leasing an alcohol ignition interlock device. To get the licence, take a signed copy of the service agreement and the authorization letter to an SAAQ service centre. Go back to the GIS centre or the LEBEAU VITRES D AUTOS branch with your licence to have the device installed. Are there costs? There are charges for installing* and leasing the device, as well as for carrying out periodic monitoring. There is also a charge for removing the device. * An additional charge may apply to some vehicles.

5 How often is the periodic monitoring? Every two months, the device must be taken to the GIS centre or LEBEAU VITRES D AUTOS branch for monitoring. You will be given a report each time, which you may be required to submit to the SAAQ upon request. What are the terms and conditions? The terms and conditions of use of an alcohol ignition interlock device are determined by the SAAQ and provided in Appendix B of the service agreement. If you fail to abide by these terms and conditions, or if you operate a vehicle without an alcohol ignition interlock device: the vehicle you are driving may be immediately seized and impounded for 30 or 90 days; you may be fined $1,500 to $3,000; and your licence could be suspended for a period of three months or revoked.
