The filter will also help control the entry of blowing dust or snow when the tractor is parked outdoors in strong winds. It is recommended to turn the valve to the OFF position during the warm season when the air conditioning is frequently used. When the filter is properly installed as illustrated, the pleats on the cab air filter go from left to right, not from front to back. 42 SELF-PROPEL WINDROWER UPDATE The WR9900 model series uses the V-Cool System that offers; Outward facing radiators Hydraulically driven variable speed fan. The V arrangement increases airflow through the entire system. Provides greater cooling efficiencies than a fully stacked arrangement. System auto-reverses every 15 minutes or auto reverse if the system senses that a screen is becoming blocked for a maintenance free system, increasing uptime and ease of use. Rear facing cooler swings open for servicing and cleaning. 42

44 AIR and MOISTURE While it is important to realize that moisture in a refrigerant system is directly or indirectly the real cause of more problems and complaints than all other causes combined, it is equally important to learn why. Basically, moisture can be classified as visible or invisible. It is the invisible moisture that causes the greatest trouble in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Moisture and air can enters a system when it is opened. Moisture and air can enter through the valve core. Moisture is created through the process of heating and cooling of components. 44

When the desiccant bag is removed from the condenser of a working system, it is normal for the outside of the bag to display a dark color and it will become darker in color with usage. This is the result of oil, moisture and sometimes dye in the oil circulating through the system. Fig. 3 45

46 AIR and MOISTURE Moisture causes; Freeze-ups Ice crystals can form and retard or stop the flow of the refrigerant at the TXV PAG refrigerant oil has an attraction for moisture Moisture to acid that attacks metal Corrosion becomes troublesome from the operating standpoint when metallic surfaces are eaten away and a product is formed known as sludge. 46

47 AIR and MOISTURE Moisture Ingress through the service valve It is normally for a properly working valve core to remain seated under high vacuum. A fully charged, fully functioning HVAC system parked outside without the protective caps installed is open to dust, dirt and in sub-zero temperatures the system can be exposed to moisture and air if the valve core spring is faulty or weak. When the ambient temperature is below the boiling point of the refrigerant (the boiling point of R134a is about -15 F), the internal pressure is lowered and the system will go into a vacuum. If the system goes into a vacuum and the and the protective cap that seals the a/c port is missing, the valve core can be sucked off its seat and air, in addition to moisture is drawn into the system. To test the service port valve core; pull a deep vacuum, shut-off the vacuum pump and disconnect the high and low service couplers one at a time and listen for air being sucked through the port or observe if there is a loss of vacuum. 48 AIR and MOISTURE Moisture Removal: The most effective way to eliminate moisture from an air conditioning system is to boil it using a vacuum pump and safely remove the moisture as a vapor. 48

52 ELECTRONIC VACUUM GAUGE Electronic vacuum gauges are specifically designed for use with high vacuum pumps. The gauge measures vacuum in microns and is sensitive to water vapor and other condensable and can give a good indication of the actual vacuum level within a system. 52

53 ELECTRONIC VACUUM GAUGE Most electronic vacuum gauges require a ¼ connection, the question is how can I easily connect to an automotive R134 system that does not have a ¼ SAE Flare access point. 53

NOTE: The reason for having a high and low side adapter is because one of the service ports may not have enough room to coupler the adapter with the sensor installed. In addition, having a high and low side adapter allows for the use of two electronic vacuum gauges that can be connected to larger systems. 57

58 ELECTRONIC VACUUM GAUGE / DIAL GAUGE Microns vs- Mechanical dial gauge Electronic vacuum gauge Mechanical dial gauge It is not uncommon to obtain a micron reading below 1000 if the system is dry and without leak. High moisture in the system, including flush not properly removed, will affect the micron reading. Over time and with use, the a/c technician will be able to determine when the increase in micron is due to moisture or a leak. Dirty vacuum pump oil will also contribute to a higher micron reading. 58

At this point the micron reading indicates a severe leak. 59

Lesson: If relying only on the low-side mechanical dial gauge, the system typically would be considered okay to charge at this point. In this case, a damaged O-ring was found on the suction hose that connects to the suction accumulator. 62

65 REFRIGERANT CAPACITIES Much work has gone into capturing the refrigerant capacities dating back to the early 1970 s. In some rare vintage cases, refrigerant information and refrigerant capacity is missing, but will be added once identified. Capacity charts on the following pages will assist the service technician in properly charging the air conditioning system with the recommended amount of refrigerant. 65
