Front end price is important, but how much will you get back in retained value, how much will it cost to service and repair, how economical is it? Vehicle depreciation, servicing and repair (including parts and tyres) and fuel gives the true picture of Affordability. The sources of this information are: An independent monitor for forecast retained values after 3 years operation. For Service, Maintenance and Repair we are using an independent survey which is updated monthly and covers all van models produced by every manufacturer. Included in the analysis are regular servicing and replacement of tyres, brake pads and discs, batteries, exhaust and clutches according to mileages 45,000 miles for the Citan sector, 60,000 miles for the Vito sector and 90,000 miles for the Sprinter sector For the fuel we use the published claimed combined fuel consumption figures for each van and, this month, a diesel price of 93 pence per litre excluding VAT, a 5p fall since last month. Whole Life Costs are the same as last month. Citan 109CDI Compact continues to top the table with the lowest in the small van sector. The whole life for the Citan models listed average 34 pence per mile, an advantage over the Ford and VW averages of 35 and 35.5 pence per mile respectively. The strongest retained values reduce whole life for the Ford Transit Connect and VW Caddy. Citan models continue to score well with strong retained values, the low fuel and SMR. The Citan 109CDI models look particularly good value. Peugeot and Renault have increased recommended retail prices since last month. 4 VITO Sector Whole Life Cost Pence/mile- August 2017 (detail on next chart) For customers Vito is an excellent all-rounder with strengths in retained values, fuel economy and SMR. It is now established as the range with the lowest operating in the medium van sector. Vito 109, 111 and 114 have lower than market leader Transit Customs and the rest of the competition. From the table over page we can see it an extra 4,552 to run the Transit Custom hp compared to Vito 109CDI Compact or an extra 3,392 compared to the Vito 111CDi Long. Taking into account engine power and load cube the Vito 109CDI, 111CDI and 114CDI look very competitive. This month Peugeot and Renault have increased the price of all medium van models. 6 SPRINTER Sector Whole Life Pence/mile - August 2017 (detail on next chart) The new Crafter whole life cost calculations take account of pricing 4% lower than the replaced range, an assumption of very good retained values on an untested new range and claimed mpg figures 12% better than the replaced range. With these reservations in mind the new front wheel drive Volkswagen Crafter now leads the table with the lowest whole life. As yet the VW range is very restricted with no RWD models, no crew vans or chassis cabs. Sprinter, the well established benchmark in the large van sector, continues with proven low cost of ownership with the advantage over Ford Transit and all other brands. Sprinter is strong on retained value, matches Transit on economy but Transit has an edge on SMR. This month Peugeot and Renault have increased the price of all their models in this sector.
