Front end price is important, but how much will you get back in retained value, how much will it cost to service and repair, how economical is it? Vehicle depreciation, servicing and repair (including parts and tyres) and fuel gives the true picture of Affordability. The sources of this information are: An independent monitor for forecast retained values after 3 years operation. For Service, Maintenance and Repair we are using an independent survey which is updated monthly and covers all van models produced by every manufacturer. Included in the analysis are regular servicing and replacement of tyres, brake pads and discs, batteries, exhaust and clutches according to mileages 45,000 miles for the Citan sector, 60,000 miles for the Vito sector and 90,000 miles for the Sprinter sector For the fuel we use the published claimed combined fuel consumption figures for each van and, this month, a diesel price of 101 pence per litre excluding VAT, a 2p increase since last month. 2 CITAN sector Whole Life Costs/mile - November 2017 (detail on next chart) Increased cost of diesel and weaker retained values has resulted in a 2% increase in whole life compared to last month.. Citan 109CDI Compact and Long top the table with the lowest in the small van sector. Citan retained values have held better than the other brands. The whole life for the Citan models listed average 34 pence per mile, an advantage over the Ford and VW averages of 36 and 37 pence per mile respectively. The strongest retained values reduce whole life for the Ford Transit Connect and VW Caddy. Citan models continue to score well with strong retained values, and low fuel and SMR. The Citan 109CDI models look particularly good value. 4 VITO Sector Whole Life Cost Pence/mile- November 2017 (detail on next chart) The small decline in retained values and fuel price increase has resulted in whole life averaging 2% higher in the Vito sector compared to last month. Vito strengths in retained values, fuel economy and SMR have established the Mercedes range with the lowest operating in the medium van sector. All Vito models have lower than market leader Ford Transit Custom. The table over page shows that over 3 years it an extra 4,279 to run the Transit Custom hp compared to Vito 109CDI or an extra 2,959 compared to the Vito 111CDi. 6 SPRINTER Sector Whole Life Pence/mile - November 2017 (detail on next chart) In the large van sector there is a small increase in whole life since last month resulting from a small decline in retained values and a 2p increase in diesel. The new front wheel drive Crafter continues to lead the table with pricing lower than the previous rear wheel range, an assumption of very good retained values on an untested new range and claimed mpg figures 12% better than the replaced range. As yet the new VW range is restricted to front wheel drive models (except the CR50 which is RWD). Sprinter, the well established benchmark in the large van sector, continues with proven low cost of ownership.
