BALLAST WATER TREATMENT AND BALLAST TANK PROTECTION
CERTIFIED & PROVEN In the rapidly emerging Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) industry, N.E.I. Treatment Systems stands out as a BWTS pioneer and global market leader. N.E.I. s patented Venturi Oxygen Stripping (VOS ) System was the first Type Approved, commercially available BWTS. N.E.I. has been setting the pace for the BWTS industry since 2002: FIRST to complete ship board trials of a BWTS using deoxygenation and cavitation FIRST to receive a Type Approval Certificate for a BWT system in October 2007 FIRST to receive multiple Type Approval Certificates FIRST to install BWT systems aboard multiple ship types Tankers, Bulkers and Container Vessels FIRST with orders for large capacity BWTS with flow rates above 4,000 m³/hour Flag Administration Type Approval Certificates: Liberia Marshall Islands Malta Panama Other Approvals: Bureau Veritas 11 Germanischer Lloyd U.S. Coast Guard California N.E.I. 3 SAFE & EFFICIENT N.E.I. s patented Venturi Oxygen Stripping (VOS ) System uses deoxygenation and cavitation to ensure 100% compliance with IMO s Ballast Water Discharge Standards. The VOS System induces a low-oxygen environment within the ballast tanks which safely and cost-effectively eliminates harmful aquatic organisms, without the use of active substances. The VOS System creates a low-oxygen, non-toxic environment which protects the ship s ballast tank coatings against degradation and prevents corrosion of steel surfaces, thereby extending the vessel s useful life to more than 30 years and delivering a compelling return on investment. VOS System Features and Benefits: Safe for installation and operations: No use of dangerous chemicals Intrinsically safe for installation in hazardous zones Does not limit trading range operates in all ports and every type of water: Fresh or salt Warm or cold Muddy or polluted Currently installed on Tankers, Bulkers and Container Vessels VOS Venturi Injectors Unlimited ballast water flow rate capacity Compelling return on investment: Compatible with standard PSPC ballast tank coatings Significantly reduces ballast tank corrosion Cost-effective system design: Low maintenance costs Can eliminate topping generator for oil tankers Eliminates ballast tank air vent heads VOS 4,400 m³/hour Stripping Gas Generator 3530 WILSHIRE BLVD SUITE 1130 LOS ANGELES CA T: E: INFO@NEI-MARINE.COM 2
THE DEOXYGENATION SOLUTION N.E.I. s patented Venturi Oxygen Stripping (VOS ) System safely removes dissolved oxygen from ballast water, creating a low-oxygen environment where aquatic organisms cannot survive. In less than 10 seconds, the VOS System removes 95 percent of the dissolved oxygen from ballast water by mixing very low-oxygen inert gas with natural water as it is drawn into the ship as ballast. In a process similar to evaporation, the inert gas strips the water of its dissolved oxygen: 1) The VOS Stripping Gas Generator (SGG) is turned on and provides low-oxygen inert gas to the Venturi Injectors. 2) Once the ballast pumps are turned on, ballast water passes through the Venturi Injectors, where it is mixed with the inert gas from the SGG N.E.I. TREATMENT SYSTEMS BALLAST WATER TREATMENT AND BALLAST TANK PROTECTION
VOS SYSTEM OPERATION 3) A cavitation process with the inert gas creates a micro-fine bubble emulsion in the water. 4) The dissolved oxygen diffuses from a liquid phase to a gas phase. Upon discharge below the water line, the ballast water once again passes through the VOS Venturi Injectors, where air is re-introduced back into the water before release into the environment. As water exits the ballast tanks, the tanks are filled with inert gas in order to maintain a low-oxygen condition, which has two key benefits: When deoxygenated water is once again drawn into the ballast tanks, it will not reoxygenate. Coating life is extended and steel corrosion reduced by up to 84 percent WILSHIRE BLVD SUITE 1130 LOS ANGELES CA T: E: INFO@NEI-MARINE.COM 4
CORROSION PROTECTION A ballast tank interior is a highly corrosive environment, causing steel to rust. In a low-oxygen environment, corrosion is virtually eliminated. Water, particularly salt water, acts as a catalyst for oxygen to cause steel to rust. Water + Oxygen + Steel = Rust During ballast discharge, the VOS System fills the ballast tanks with low-oxygen, inert gas. Oxygen levels are maintained below 4.0 percent and the corrosion rate is reduced by as much as 84 percent. In contrast, many chemicals used for ballast water treatment are strong oxidizers that can increase steel corrosion and degrade ballast tank coatings. The VOS System does not use chemicals and helps to preserve ballast tank coatings. The low-oxygen ballast tank environment maintained by VOS also extends the life of sacrificial anodes, further saving money. 7 REDUCED SHIP LIFE-CYCLE COSTS Class Survey Coating Condition Rating Coating Breakdown New IMO/IACS Coating Life Requirement Typical Vessel Life (Thin coating) Using V.O.S. Good Coating Only Loss 15% - 20% Steel Renewal, Sandblast and Recoat (All ballast tanks) Fair Vessel Life (Years) To restore a ship s ballast tanks from poor to good condition is expensive, costing millions of dollars. By preventing corrosion, N.E.I. s VOS System may maintain a good ballast tank rating for the life of the vessel. N.E.I. s ASTM Standard laboratory testing indicates that ballast tank steel protected by VOS System will last over 35 years before requiring renewal. Corrosion reduced by 84% translates to: Less coating maintenance and steel renewal Significantly extended life of sacrificial anodes Shorter off-hire time in drydock and significantly reduced life-cycle costs 270-day trial showed 84% lower corrosion 3530 WILSHIRE BLVD SUITE 1130 LOS ANGELES CA T: E: INFO@NEI-MARINE.COM 6
