Heightened competition is on the horizon, though, with redesigns from Buick, Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota later this year. Both Korean subcompact cars show momentum ahead of debuting their redesigns in the fall (Accent & Rio). The already redesigned A5 attracts attention amid a refreshed 5 Series, and newcomer Bolt enjoys a strong upward trajectory but may be challenged later this year by Leaf s impending refresh. Two Volkswagen models regain ground as the year mark approaches for buybacks and incentives resulting from the emissions violation that impeded the automaker two years ago. The model movement may also signal reconsideration among shoppers for the troubled brand.

Now less than a quarter point from the segment top 3, its upcoming redesign could kick its momentum into overdrive. 5.4% 8 7.8% 4 O Rio s position improves in a congested segment in advance of its 2018 refresh (due in the fall). Heading upward, Jetta has narrowed its gap to the segment top 5 by 81% since January. As of May, Bolt lands in the segment top 3, affording Chevrolet two top 3 positions (3 Bolt and 2 Volt). FUSION A lead pack model gaining a point and a half in a plagued and competitive segment is no small feat. Fusion has also trimmed its gap to Accord by 41% and more than tripled its advantage over Camry. Now in a virtual tie with Audi models A3 and A4, Q50 is a mere half point away from the top 5.
