3 A shared history Carrozzeria Castagna and the International Motor Show of Geneva join in celebrating one hundred years of the illustrious Geneva show. Together, we have led the way in the history of the automobile as an expression of 20th-century technology and style. Carrozzeria Castagna, the legendary Italian coach builder, has been there every step of the way since the very first motor show when it showed what were then called motor coaches. Since 1905, Castagna has been bringing this Show its thoroughly tested, genuine custom-built cars made specifically for the customer. Castagna s principles have always been innovation, construction technology and focus on style. Now, for the 75th International Motor Show in Geneva, we are introducing new models emblematic of our skill at creating absolutely one-of-a-kind designs. To follow Italian Dreams in 2003 and Tailor-Made in Milan in 2004, for 2005 our theme is Making the Difference. 3

4 Almost 150 years in Milan In 1849 Carlo Castagna founded his coach-building business for horse-drawn carriages, building transportation for several royal families and the nobility of the day. At the dawn of the automobile age, Castagna took its years of experience and applied it to the challenges of this new vehicle. A sterling example of its success is the Alfa Romeo for Count Ricotti, one of the earliest examples of applied aerodynamics. Castagnas vehicles cleaved construction quality, sophistication and innovation and met with success after success. Among the wonders it created were Isotta Fraschini, Alfa Romeo, powerful Mercedes-Benz and American Duesenberg. After World War II, Castagna started making custom-built cars, some with the Vutotal patent; custom-built and all made with an eye to true elegance and fine style. As times changed, most coachbuilders had to close down. Independent chassises made it prohibitively costly to make single custom-built vehicles. In the late 90s, a resourceful designer, Gioacchino Acampora, brought Castagna back, taking the name and, more importantly, reinterpreting the spirit of the illustrious coachbuilder. Having worked with some of the top names in the automobile industry, Castagna has equipped itself to offer state-of-the-art technology to interact with our customers, suggesting solutions at the height of modern style and ultra sophisticated materials. Carrozzeria Castagna s Tailor Made in Milan creations give customers a chance to realize a dream that until the 1950s was the norm for the well-to-do. The words of Leonardo da Vinci express the only limit: We ought not to desire the impossible (from: The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci). 4

6 Three ways to be one-of-a-kind Our workshop offers three levels of service: Light Tuning, Coachbuilding and One-Off. Starting with the chassis of your choice, any change you want, we can do. Less is more, in the words of the great architect, Mies Van der Rohe. Light Tuning is our expression of this idea. You can make changes to colours, upholstery, materials and accessories, either tweaking or substantially changing the car s personality. The Castagna workshop offers the finest selection of materials, uncommon combinations and exquisite crafting. It s the little details that make the difference between a standard car and a genuine custom-built vehicle. Coachbuilding makes a clean break from boring convention. Free reign is given to the most extreme customizations, defining a new car concept without compromising quality. Need some examples? A coupe can be turned into a station wagon; a saloon can become a limousine. Even the most decisive changes and boldest looks maintain beautifully balanced proportions. One-Off: a modern take on the custom-built concept with the creation of a single, thoroughly tested vehicle designed to special requests. Carrozzeria Castagna s design expertise can completely re-invent any model. The car lover s dream follows the guiding lines of his imagination, which we take and turn into a tangible, personal signature. 6

7 Products on show Our show space will feature three cars that optimally express the Making the Difference concept. The CrossUP and Tender are new this year, based on the MINI. They join our Wagon, Woody and SUWagon models, big hits at last year s Geneva show. Both serve as more proof of our workshop s exceptional versatility in designing and building models to fulfil our customers every specific wish. The CrossUP is perfect for a wide range of uses. Designed as an easy trek vehicle to carry you to the beauty of nature, it is ready to take on any adventure. Special equipment can be created depending on how you plan to use the car. The Tender goes back to a car concept that we cherish, popular in all the finest beach reports in the 50 s: the Beach Baby. Class, style, and just a hint of swagger as you step off your yacht or out of your villa to grab an aperitif at the marina aboard this superb vehicle. Cars to go aboard yachts come with special equipment for proper transport and fastening. The Aria one-off, based on the Ferrari 575, is the third piece we re showing off in Geneva. With our customer s express permission, we are showing the car in one of the stages of construction. Our intention is to let our visitors understand our design process from the idea to the finished automobile. This version is an excellent demonstration of how much the same concept (the Rossellini shown in Geneva in 2003) can be modified and updated in keeping with the choices made together with the customer. 8 CrossUp The CrossUP is a car that is perfect for a wide range of uses. Its variable suspension system and new Pirelli Scorpion tyres make it suited to any kind of road surface and fully adjustable to respond perfectly to any way you want to use your CrossUP. Its full extension is an impressive 25 cm, letting it take on an off-road path or travel safely on the highway with equal aplomb. A third volume is added on, defining the exterior and forming a convenient pick-up body, fully clad in scratch-resistant material. Spacious, key-locked compartments can hold the accessories best suited to the vehicle s use. The handy, roomy exterior space can be fitted with special equipment made to fit the car s use. As always with our custom-built vehicles, the interiors are made to customer specifications. The display model gives a sneak preview of our Vodka-Cigar mini fridge, specially sized to fit on all Mini vehicles between the front seats. Activate the Vodka function, and it can keep small bottles of champagne and vodka chilled. Push the Cigar button and it becomes a convenient humidifier for fine cigars. European road use approval can be obtained by using standard engines in the various versions. 8

10 Tender The Tender goes back to a car concept that we cherish, popular in all the finest beach reports in the 50 s: the Beach Baby. The exterior of this custom-built car, based on the Mini Cabrio, features new proportions and technical solutions. The car is streamlined, with a fixed access compartment with antitheft bars in place of the normal doors. Like in some luxury boats, the rear is lengthened by 70 cm to make a convenient working space. A completely teak-clad beach baby that can be armed to give you everything you need for your sea-faring life. You can toss in your scuba equipment or your golf clubs, or just give a lift to a bunch of buddies. The vehicle shown was accessorized with a teak-clad steel double bottom for towels or a fresh pair of clothes plus a shower with a 30-litre tank of fresh water. to rinse a freshly-plucked piece of fruit or freshen up before going out for an aperitif. Its 2000-watt Clarion audio system turns this sweetheart into a powerful sound system for beach parties. Four moisture-resistant speakers transmit a crystal clear digital signal. Extra headlights complete the lighting system for spontaneous parties on the beach. Its wonderful soft top was kept, here with striped colourful fabric designed by Missoni featuring the same watertight seal as the original. Its interior features innovative neoprene-upholstered seats making it no problem to hop in your car with your clothes still wet from your dip in the ocean. We joined forces with Mares, a worldwide leader in underwater products, to make interiors that can stand up to sun, saltwater and sand, redesigning the passenger compartment fittings and offering ultra practical materials. European road use approval can be obtained by using standard engines in the various versions. 10
