3 1.0 Introduction This is the monthly progress report for the month of December 2005 of the HMI program for the progress undertaken by LMSAL under the phase C/D/E contract with Stanford. The LMSAL team is in collaboration with Stanford University on the HMI/SDO solar physics investigation being led by Professor Phil Scherrer of Stanford University. 2.0 Executive Summary January was a hectic month getting the structural model done and the ETU oven done. Some more January highlights: HCM life test is at 38.7 of 180 M moves, the structural model was aligned and shipped to Wyle for vibration testing, ETU oven assembly was completed, the focus/cal was tested, held Michelson performance review (PSR), received the remaining optics and 7 CCD were packaged. The HMI team continues to hold weekly team meetings internally, with the SDO Project and with suppliers. 3.0 Technical Progress Report 3.1 Filters and Optics All the documentation for the request for quotation for the front window filter is completed. The specification was reviewed by Andover and was released. As soon as the quote is received, the order can be placed. The primary and secondary lens focus measurements were completed and are within specification. The Lyot filter is coming together. The polarizers were completed and integrated with the elements, the temperature compensation measurements were completed and the cells were received. The next thing is characterization within The dye laser technician is schedule to come this week (actually here today). The chamber for the plasma radiation test is up and running and the test has been scheduled for later in February. 3.2 Mechanical The structural model assembly was completed. The structure needed a little bit of rework. When the aft flange design was completed, the mounting holes for to the bracket were moved to the exterior to accommodate the secondary lens mount and it was over looked that the ears would not fit through the hole in the structure. The structure was modified to accommodate the ears and the supplier was notified to incorporate into the flight design. Also, an EMI labyrinth will be added to block the holes. The HOP alignment cube was measured relative to the vibration fixture and the internal cubes were measured relative to the HOP alignment cube. The repeatability was checked with removal of the cover and the HOP from the vibration fixture. The harness layout was completed and back-shells selected (order in progress). The sunshade for the CCD radiators was completed and incorporated into the thermal and structural models. The z lifting plate was completed. Lizzie Barnett has moved on to another program, thanks for all her hard work on the Page 3 of 7

4 mechanism, ISS mirror, Limb sensor, ISS beam splitter and BDS beam-splitter designs and drawings. Complete Structural Model (on CG table) 3.3 Mechanisms The HCM life test is up to 38.7 of 180M moves. The life test shutters are being tested prior to disassembly. The focus/cal wheel prototype assembly and testing was completed and has good torque margin and works great. The first set of flight HCMs were received and the remaining units will be received mid-march. The flight actuators for the alignment mechanism and front door were received. 3.4 Electrical All boards are in test except for the power and space-wire #2 boards, which are 80% assembled. The ISS board testing is completed. Testing continues on the space-wire/dcri board for the HSB test at Goddard in March. HEB assembly and testing is progressing. A lot of focus has been applied to getting ready for AIA CDR. 3.5 Software Kernel build 2 development continues. A lot of focus has been applied to getting ready for AIA CDR. 3.6 I&T The structural model was shipped to Wyle and the all three axis completed. No anomalies observed in the data. The structure was inspected and looks great. The structural model is on its way back to Palo Alto for alignment checks. The ETU oven assembly is complete and the heaters have been tested. The thermistors have been calibrated. The vacuum testing should begin very soon. Page 4 of 7

5 Structural Model in X-axis Configuration 3.7 Thermal The reduced thermal model has been completed and the CDRL submitted to Goddard and the RFA responses are near completion. 3.8 Major Sub-contracts CCD e2v Seven flight CCDs have been packaged and processing of the batches continues on schedule. It was decided to change the process. The first two sets of the CCD delivered will be of the old process and the second two sets will be of the new process. Testing continues on the droop affect and preliminary data was presented at the quarterly Camera Electronics RAL The DM2 Camera is schedule to be shipped to mid-february and progress continues on assembly of the DM1 camera. RAL has evaluated the schedule for switching to a 6V camera design and there are minimal schedule impacts. The additional power for the 6V is acceptable by the project. The last items being evaluated are part availability and mechanical impacts Michelson LightMachinery The first set of Michelsons will be ship toward the end of February and the pre-ship review was held. No issues were raised. The wideband assembly is completed and the mirror coatings are being applied. The narrowband is currently being assembled Structure Vision Composites The drawings were reviewed for flight release and to make sure all the little details learned from the structural model assembly are incorporated. The material is in house and the machine parts that had no changes were ordered. The schedule was reviewed in detail and there is a schedule slip, as expected, due to the delay in the structural model testing and incorporating the minor design changes. The metering tube schedule was reviewed and looks pretty good. The isolator tube schedule was also reviewed and looks good as well. Page 5 of 7

6 4.0 Design Updates No design changes to report. 5.0 Resource Requirements The mass and power updates are attached. No change in mass and the power shows a slight increase due to board testing. The CEB 6V change has not been incorporated, yet. 6.0 Schedule and Control Milestones An updated detailed schedule is attached and following is a list of the control milestones and their status. The I & T schedule is being in evaluated. At quick glance, the schedule slip can be mitigated with incorporating parallel paths into the schedule. A schedule review will be held to discuss the changes and I & T plan prior to submission of the modified schedule. 8.0 Risk Assessment A risk management review board was held this month. ID Risk Comments RMHMI001 CEB Noise No change. LM tests are scheduled for February. RMHMI003 CCD Development No change. Flight CCDs are packaged, and are going into evaluation. RMHMI004 CEB-HEB Noise No Change in rankings. Breadboard circuit board is still in test. RMHMI005 Calcite Availability No change. We have acceptable calcite for all flight and flight spare components. Risk will be closed when elements are tested as a Lyot filter. Dye laser needed for test not yet available. RMHMI006 Front Window No change. We have agreed on an updated flight design. Revised spec, SOW, and drawings were informally provided to Andover; released versions are to be sent to Andover in the next week. RMHMI007 Mechanism Life Hollow core motor life test continues M moves completed out of 180 M (Tuning motor lifetime has been reached). Shutter life test has successfully completed. Likelihood reduced based on progress of life tests. RMHMI009 CCD Droop Raised likelihood: Subsequent CCD testing has shown much more device to device variation than previously appreciated. Future batches of CCDs will include e2v-recommended process change to minimize the droop. RMHMI010 EPDM and ERP rollout Mitigation strategy updated. Heritage purchasing system has been shut down. ERP has rolled out. RMHMI011 FPP Rework Likelihood reduced to Low. FPP has returned, current impact is as anticipated. RMHMI012 CEB 6 V Serial Drivers New risk. Page 7 of 7
