How a standby power system works A typical standby system consists of a generator set that is installed outdoors and an automatic transfer switch that is installed inside, next to the electrical distribution panel in your home or business. The transfer switch monitors the power from the utility. When the power fails, the transfer switch signals the generator to start. After a short delay, the transfer switch shuts off the connection to utility power and makes the connection between the generator set and the appliances, lights and other loads that you want to keep running.
