1 May 8th The economy continues to hum. Everything looks good for rail, with some challenges. The U.S. unemployment rate is at its lowest level in 18 years at 3.9%. The labor market is tight for skilled workers and that is said for skilled rail workers and particularly for the Class 1 s. PFL is even receiving calls for leads for skilled people, so that is how bad it is out there! During earnings calls recently, each of the Class 1 railroads outlined their plans to improve service with all but the CSX planning to add headcount and locomotives.. Management teams have faith in their ability to recover poor service and long delivery times. Challenges remain on weak network resiliency as long lead times for assets and skilled labor could cause issues to persist longer than expected, especially if volume growth accelerates which we expect. Crude continues to rise in price almost hitting $70 per barrel this past Friday and blowing through that Monday morning of this week and so does the volume of crude transported on the Class 1 s. Until recently, CP and CN s volume growth in petroleum and petroleum products diverged as CN actively stepped back from crude amidst broader network congestion. However, the recent week s data show volumes in the petroleum category picking up at CN, which is now up by 9% quarter to date, CP continues to run at a higher rate with volumes up by 30% quarter to date. Overall, North American rail volume for the week ending April 28, 2018 was up yet again over last year. Canadian and Mexican railroads totaled 372,452 carloads, up 2.7 percent compared with the same week last year, and 370,863 intermodal units, up 6.3 percent compared with last year. Total combined weekly rail traffic in North America was 743,315 carloads and intermodal units, up 4.5 percent. North American rail volume for the first 17 weeks of 2018 was 12,053,949 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.8 percent compared with New car deliveries are looking bullish. Deliveries of 13,099 cars in this year s opening quarter were almost even with fourth-quarter 2017 deliveries of 13,408. Close to 5,000 cars were added to backlogs in the first quarter. As a result, current backlogs total 55,216 units and represent 4.2 quarters of assemblies at current production rates. Activity at PFL this past week has been brisk with a bunch of inventory changing hands. Cars are moving quickly and new car deals are hitting the market every single day.
