IICL released four reports in : General Specials End Fleet, Purchases & Dispositions Chassis & Domestic Containers IICL SIXTH ANNUAL LEASED CONTAINER FLEET SURVEY March 21,. IICL has announced the preliminary figures on containers from its Sixth Annual Leased Container and Chassis Fleet Survey. As of the beginning of, Edward A. Woolley, IICL Secretary, stated, the world container leasing fleet stood at about 3.6 million. The January figure of 3,574,571 represented an increase of only 127,205, or 3.7%, over the 3,447,366 reported in January Industry majors had 3,304,571 of international containers on January 1, ; other leasing companies were estimated to have had 270,000. This represented a total of 3,574,571 as of the beginning of the year for the full leasing industry. Industry majors bought approximately 318,400 in 1993, far fewer than the 430,000 planned at the beginning of the year; and they do not expect to purchase many more in. Industry majors expect to add approximately 320,000, worth an estimated $950,000,000 during. Purchases for 1993 and stand in marked contrast to the 570,000 purchased in Sizes: The composition of majors fleets continued to show the shift toward 40 footers which began some years ago. The percentage of the majors devoted to 40 footers increased to 61.23% in January from 59.10% in 1993, 57.77% in January 1992 and 54.95% in January Forty footers have thus gained over 6% in three years, a major increase. The majors January totals consisted of: 20 Foot Boxes 1,270, % of Major s 40 Foot Boxes 1,011, % of Major s 45 Foot Boxes 3, % of Major s 48 Foot Boxes % of Major s Other Sizes % of Major s Further details on specials, chassis, swap bodies, domestic containers and dispositions will be described in forthcoming releases. The figures referring to industry majors include IICL members, Cronos, Flexi-Van, Genstar, Interpool/Trac, Textainer, Trans Ocean, Transamerica and Triton and also Matson, Sea Containers and Tiphook. IICL CONTAINER SURVEY SECOND REPORT: SPECIALS May 9,. IICL has released the Second Report on its Annual Leased Container and Chassis Fleet Survey. IICL s Survey shows that majors international container specials continued to increase at a very rapid rate in Edward A. Woolley, Secretary of the Institute, stated, Specials increased 20.5% between January 1, 1993, and January 1,. Perhaps even more significantly, the proportion of
specials in the overall fleet of leased containers increased in marked fashion. In January specials numbered 566,199, or 17.1% of the majors fleet. This represented a very substantial increase of 2.4 percentage points over the 14.7% (469,973 ) in January Calculations by value of investment would show an even greater increase. Three types of containers demonstrated spectacular rates of increase. High cubes continued their rapid rate of increase, rising 29.9%; reefers rose at 28.1%; and tanks rose 20.4%. All other specials dropped to almost normal or subnormal rates. High rates of increase of 20% or more began in the majors specialized container fleets in The January figures show the following: % INCREASE (DECREASE) % INCREASE (DECREASE) Tanks 11,826 9, , Reefers 148, , , High Cube 239, , , Open Tops + Sides 90,637 86, , Platform + Flat Racks 11,624 47,639 57, , Bulk 1,783 2,356 (24.3) 2,451 (3.9) Other 14,330 13, , Total 566, , % 386, % Majors included Cronos, Flexi-Van, Genstar, Interpool/Trac, Textainer, Trans Ocean, Transamerica and Triton, Matson, Sea Containers and Tiphook. Further reports on specials, domestic containers, purchases, dispositions and chassis will be forthcoming in the next two to three months. At the conclusion of the review of the figures, IICL plans to publish a booklet analyzing the results. Purchases. As of the beginning of the year, the majors were expected to buy an additional $451,262,000, or 75,347, of specialized containers in. While 75,347 reflect a reduction from the 1993 purchasing level, the value of the investment in specials continues to be an exceptionally high share, 45.7% of the majors total projected investment of $986,504,000 in new international containers for. Last year the planned percentage of investment in specials was 42.1% compared with 26.7% in The majors planned purchases for include: Tanks Reefers High Cube Open Tops Others Total 1,975 15,700 29,172 18,500 10,000 75,347

IICL final world leasing survey figures show that container lessors are expected to purchase at least 389,517 this year bringing the world leasing fleet to 3,739,605 by the end of the year. Major lessors expect to purchase at least an additional 360,087 in, stated Edward A. Woolley, Secretary of IICL, and this figure may increase during the course of the year. The majors total projected dollar investment in new international containers for will be $1,047,988,000 according to final survey figures, somewhat higher than the earlier projection of $986,504,000, and if purchases continue to increase, dollar figures will also increase dispositions by majors totaled 200,206 or 6.28% of the 3,187,366 they held in January If other leasing companies disposed of their January 1993 fleet (estimated at 260,000 ) at the same rate, total 1993 dispositions for the container leasing industry were an estimated 216,534.
Major leasing companies had 3,304,571 on January 1,, and planned to add 10.9% during the year. If other leasing companies also add to their 270,000 at the same rate, the total purchases for both majors and other companies will be 389,517 in. The end world leasing fleet can then be calculated as follows: January Leasing Fleet 3,574,571 Dispositions (6.28%) 224, 483 3,350,088 Purchases 389,517 December Leasing Fleet 3,739,605 The figures referring to industry majors include IICL members Cronos, Flexi-Van, Genstar, Interpool, Textainer, Trans Ocean, Transamerica and Triton; and they also include figures from Matson, Sea Containers and Tiphook which participated in the survey. A fourth report on chassis and domestic containers will be issued shortly. IICL FLEET SURVEY FOURTH REPORT: CHASSIS GROWTH IN 1993 SLOW; DOMESTIC CONTAINERS VIGOROUS July 15,. The Fourth Report on IICL s Fleet Survey reveals that in 1993 the U.S. leased container chassis fleet added only 4,337 units, to end the year with about 208,551 chassis. Domestic container leasing, on the other hand, grew by 22.7%. As of the beginning of, the U.S. domestic container lessors fleet stood at about 34,942 units, an increase of 6,467 during The European swap body industry declined, at least so far as leasing companies are concerned. Major leasing companies owned only about 1,000 European swap bodies as begun. Chassis. IICL figures show that in January the leasing company fleet of U.S. chassis stood at 208,551. The 1993 increase of 4,337 represented an increase of only 2.12%, about half of 1992 s increase of 4.83%, stated Edward A. Woolley, Secretary of the container and chassis leasing trade association. IICL believes that ship lines own about 219,630 chassis. Together with about 10,400 for railroads and 8,000 for truckers, this gives a total for the U.S. of about 446,581 chassis. Of this figure, about 48,000 U.S. chassis are owned by foreign ship lines and smaller owners. The major lessors chassis fleet consisted of 207,611 units in January. Chassis for international containers included 62,661 units in the foot category, and 110,250 in the 40 foot and larger category. Chassis for U.S. domestic containers included 12,454 fixed chassis, principally of the 48 foot variety, 17,756 extendables and 1,102 other types. Flexi-Van Leasing, Inc., is by far the largest U.S. chassis owner. Other major chassis lessors are IICL members, Trac Lease, Transamerica, Genstar and
Trans Ocean. Major chassis lessors participating in the survey also included XTRA, Tiphook, Sea Containers and Penn Intermodal. Other IICL members are Cronos, Interpool, Textainer and Triton. Major lessors chassis utilization figures averaged 92.79% at the beginning of, a 2.33% improvement over majors utilization of 90.46% a year earlier. Major lessors will purchase about 19,575 new chassis in worth approximately $130,130,000, a substantial increase over last year s purchases. Interestingly, 11,100 of these, costing $74,500,000, are for U.S. domestic containers (8, foot lightweights and 3,100 others, including extendables). Majors expect to purchase 2,200 chassis in the foot length of a value of $11,900,000; they will buy 5,900 to carry 40 foot containers, 225 to carry tank containers and 150 triaxles, together worth $43,730,000. Disposition of marine containers chassis by majors in 1993 was reported as 847 in the foot length and 2,565 in the foot length. Domestic Containers. U.S. domestic container lessors were estimated to hold 34,942 actual units in January. The majors U.S. domestic container fleet increased to 28,142 actual units in January from 22,675 in January 1993 and from 18,071 in January Other lessors are estimated to have had about 6,800 units in January. The majors 28,142 units consisted of 25, foot boxes and 2, and 53 foot boxes.
