8 8 As Green Building Assessment methods like BREEAM and LEED (see further in this Guide) gain importance, knowledge of the solar and luminous characteristics of sunscreen fabrics becomes imperative. Solar and luminous characteristics All figures provided in this Guide are measured and calculated by accredited laboratories according to the latest European standards and will tell you exactly how efficient our fabrics are. EN 410 EN 410 (1998): Defines how to make spectral measurements on fabrics and how to calculate the solar transmittance (Ts) and solar reflectance (Rs) values. The solar transmittance and reflectance values are required for the calculation of the solar factor g. g-value calculation EN A1 (2007): This standard specifies the simplified method for the calculation of the solar factor g.the solar factor or g-value is the total solar energy transmittance whereas is the solar factor of the combination of glazing and solar protection device. Visual and thermal comfort EN (2005): Performance characteristics and classification of a solar protection device or roller shutter with regard to visual and thermal comfort. The standard defines the technical characteristics of 4 typical glazings (A,B,C,D) for the calculation of the value and classifies the thermal and visual comfort. 11 1. Detailed Search: search by screen performances and characteristics 11 Thermal performance: If your goal is to use solar shading for blocking the heat that enters a room and to lower cooling expenditure you should choose thermal performance as primary criterion. This criterion is based upon the solar factor () values. You can select thermal performances from 0 to 4 (0=very little effect, 4=very good effect). Visual performance: If your main goal is to filter the incoming daylight and prevent annoying reflections in computer screens, choose visual performance as your primary criterion. This criterion is called glare control and is based upon the combination of direct and diffuse light transmittance (Tvdir and Tvdiff values). You can select glare control performances from 0 to 4 (0=very little effect, 4=very good effect). Night privacy: Maybe your intention is to still have privacy when it gets dark outside and you need to turn on the light. The night privacy class will give you an idea of how well the fabric protects from people looking in. Night privacy is also based on the combination of direct and diffuse light transmittance (Tvdir and Tvdiff values). Visual contact outside All Helioscreen solar shading fabrics (black-out excluded) allow visual contact with the outside. If this is an important criterion for you, this class will give you the best idea of how good this view through is. Visual contact outside is again based on the combination of direct and diffuse light transmittance (Tvdir and Tvdiff values). Colour: Select one or more colour groups to find the most suitable colour for your project. 2. Quick Search: search by fabric name or code Fabric name: e.g. Sergé, Fabric code: e.g. AR03A (= NRG Basic with an openness factor of 3%) Colour code: e.g (= white) 3. Browse collection: search by product type Sales support

16 16 For a better Performance in Visual Comfort Helioscreen has designed and developed an intelligent software program, called LightTool, which allows for making daylight simulations in an office environment. This valuable tool will help you in choosing an appropriate fabric and solar control system for the office environment. LightTool In a few steps LightTool leads you to the right choice: Choose the geographical location Select the orientation of the facade Select the date and time Select the percentage of glazing in the facade Select your shading strategy Select the weather condition Now you can go to single view and create your report The Guide
17 You can make a simulation for several situations, for example: 17 Without solar shading With Star 3% dusk With Natte desert Simulation for Santiago de Chile Average illumination at 1 m Luminance ratio screen/reflection Without solar shading 3138 Lux 1.6 to 1 With solar shading: Star 3% Lux 5.2 to 1 With solar shading: Natte Lux 2.8 to Cd/m 2 Visual comfort is available when: The contrast levels on different surfaces inside the office are mastered. Sufficient light is available, preferably natural daylight. Illumination levels in between 500 and 1500 lux are ideal. In the above example the column Average illumination at 1 m shows that Natte is with 975 lux within the ideal range to provide sufficient daylight. There are no annoying reflections in the computer screen. The luminance ratio (in Cd/m 2 ) of the computer screen and the daylight falling on the computer screen should be minimum 3 to 1 or higher. In the above example the Luminance ratio screen/reflection shows that Star 3% provides the best result with a ratio of 5.2 to 1. If you would like a free LightTool simulation (one simulation per project), just go to and fill out the form. Sales support
18 18 Helioscreen has a clear mission: to make and supply high-quality products that improve quality of life and work. We accomplish this through ongoing research and product development, always bearing in mind that the service we give to the customer is of the utmost importance. The Quality Chain But the quality of the weaving process for Screen fabric is only one link in the Quality Chain: later on, the fabric will have to be cut to size, welded, finished and assembled into a roller blind and put onto a window. The quality of the end product - the installed blind - will be judged by the end user only, and every link in the manufacturing and assembly chain will have to be perfectly controlled to make sure that the quality in one stage of the manufacturing process does not get lost somewhere else. The weaving of glass yarns remains a complex and difficult task, but with the help of the latest developments in the beaming and weaving processes it has been perfected. The customer should be aware, however, of a few areas that deserve attention: Colour variations Compared to the sample card, from one batch of yarn to another, minor and carefully controlled colour variations may occur. Storage of the rolls Store the rolls in such a way that no excessive weight rests on the fabric. While the fabric is sturdy and strong, glass does not like to be compressed and the fabric may be deformed if it is put under continuous local high pressure. Never store the rolls vertically. Put them by preference in separate cardboard tubes. Cover manufacturing Always make sure the covers are cut at perfectly right angles. Use razor sharp blades or crush-cut knives in order to avoid splitting the glass core. Stitching is not recommended, it is better to weld the fabric, either with a highfrequency or a thermal welding machine, especially designed for this job. Maximum dimensions There are certain limits to the size of a single sunblind, depending upon the diameter and material of the roller tube, the type of mechanism and the size of the headbox. These are limits beyond which the blind will simply not perform properly and the screen cover will not behave as it should. Helioscreen offers free information on the use of its fabrics and the maximum dimensions of single blinds. Call or us if you have any questions or if you are in doubt. The Guide
19 19 19 We REACH REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical Substances), a European community regulation on chemicals and their safe use, is the most significant piece of legislation to impact textile manufacturing in the last 25 years. Prior to REACH, there were 5 different chemical directives in Europe. Now they re all covered by one standard. Sustainability The sole purpose of REACH is to address the production and use of chemical substances, and their potential impacts on both human health and the environment (especially those considered highly toxic). Ensuring that Helioscreen is compliant is a continuous process of evaluating and monitoring all aspects of the regulation. Although we are a so called Downstream user and have no registration obligations (titles 4 and 5 of the directive), we re always committed to take the necessary actions to comply with the REACH requirements, as applicable. Greener Buildings Visual comfort is a key aspect in BREEAM, the world s leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. You can win several credits for daylighting, glare control and view out. The Dutch version of BREEAM even demands a glare control class of 3. Helioscreen provides several fabrics and colors that have this glare control class 3. In fact our special Glare 3 range was developed with this aspect in mind. Furthermore our fabrics contribute to thermal comfort and energy savings, also important criteria for BREEAM. For LEED, the North American equivalent of BREEAM you can score the following points using Helioscreen fabrics: Topic Sub topic Achievable points Sustainable site Light Pollution Reduction 1 out of 26 Energy and Atmosphere Optimise Energy Performance 15 out of 35 Indoor Environmental Quality Controlability of Systems/ Light 1 out of 14 Controlability of Systems/ Thermal 1 out of 14 Thermal Comfort/ Design 1 out of 14 Daylight and views 2 out of 14 Total 21 out of 75 Visit our website and learn about our BREEAM and LEED certified references.

But if the daylight entering a room is too intense, it can become annoying. Especially reflections in computer screens, smart boards, TV-screens and tablets can be a nuisance. Installing blinds with a glare control class 3 fabric can avoid this. In fact, the BREEAM version of the Netherlands even prescribes a glare control class 3 for sunblinds. Helioscreen has developed a special range of fabric with glare control class 3: Glare 3. Four dark colors with a lighter touch and a 5% openness factor for ideal view through. 108 108 The Guide
109 Printing on screen: Thinking out of the box 109 So far screen fabrics were designed to be functional. While keeping this functional aspect, fiberglass screen fabrics with printed designs are unique and have a high added value for new businesses, especially projects. Digital printing, a fully sustainable process Digital printing refers to the method of printing from a digital based image directly to a variety of media. The main difference between digital printing and traditional methods is that no printing plates are used. This results in a quicker and less expensive turnaround time. The printing method is - both environmentally and technically a sustainable process. We use the greenest printers on the market. No special preliminary treatment of the fabric is required, and printing can easily be done for inside and outside applications. Almost any type of the Helioscreen fibreglass fabric range can be printed on. There is no special treatment required afterwards and the inline fixation is done at low temperature. Digital print applications reduce the impact on the environment because non-toxic, low-smell inks are used. VOC-levels (volatile organic compound levels) of both fabric and print, are extremely low. Because the inks are fire retardant and non-combustible the printing process is performed in a safe working environment. The only limit is your imagination Think out of the box and use your imagination. Whether you propose print on rollerblinds, tensile structures or even as a decoration or communication tool, many other options or applications are possible. Share your thoughts with us and create your own designs. We will be glad to explore what never has been done and think out of the box together with you. The only limit is your imagination. Helioscreen also has a range of standard patterns to print on screen fabric: ask for our collection book. Out of the box - Print on screen
